Don't know what it is about the early Rayman games but they all managed to be very creepy for kids games.
The entire holocaust-like setting of Rayman 2 gave it an unnerving atmosphere. Didn't help that the game also had spooky levels.

yeah, Rayman 2 had a bit of this grim, disturbing atmosphere going on. it wasn't a nice, funny and colorful world with some bad guys in it. it was a once happy world that is now dying by being sucked dry by its parasites
