I wouldn't bother with the DLC, honestly. You can find the songs the day they're released on Nico if you want to listen to them, and the rhythm gameplay is nothing to write home about. The focus of the game is character interaction, the gameplay sections are really just a hold-over from the arcade that break up the monotony a bit.

I've played it. A lot of the game is just a simple rhythm game without a whole lot of depth to it, which you can easily play without any Japanese knowledge. However, there's a fair chunk of it that's about idol interaction and the such that's going to require at least some basic Japanese knowledge.
