A game where you can kill every major character, or go through the game without killing a single enemy, is at least worth the price of admission.
Add to that a touching story, unique gameplay style, and godly soundtrack, and you have a game that's far from being absolute fucking trash.

It was generic and anime as all Hell, and the twists were incredibly last minute and retarded.

That doesn't mean it was good. The shmup aspects were incredibly generic and boring, sparing an enemy was much more monotonous than simply running or kill it, and while it was more enjoyable in the bosses, it was just used for that one fight and never seen again.
Also, the overworld is incredibly boring to explore if there is any due to the game being more linear than Final Fantasy 13 and with characters that won't stop sucking your dick for 3 minutes except in Waterfall, the only enjoyable part of the game because of it and piss easy puzzles.
The game is pretty much painfully average at best and at worst incredibly annoying and boring.
