Closest you'll get is Shadow of Rome

this will be something, i guess. They got the guy who's been rebuilding ancient rome for google earth to help them now so it should be accurate in the least.

rest of these Rome games in steam are either total war or shovelware-looking stuff

age of decadence, sort of, if by "ancient rome" you mean "vaguely low fantasy post-apocalypse sociopolitically styled after rome" and if by "explore" you mean "browse the selection of factions to side with, assuming you ever actually get anywhere because you die like you're playing ADOM due to failing instadeath stat checks and getting into combat which is almost literally always game over"

It's probably the closest any game has gotten to portraying how I think roman life would feel, but I cheated to max all my stats and cut the bullshit so take what I say with a grain of salt

Sounds good.

Just read up on character building if the game really gives you shit. There's a pretty comprehensive demo kicking around on steam. Gives you about 25% of the game if you replay it, like, eight times.

Ryse isn't terrible.

Assassin's creed 2 and brotherhood sorta. It's in pre renaissance italy, but lots of Roman architecture and countryside. Also games are like $5 and you get to climb all over roman temples and shit.

>tfw no good gladiator RPGs
>no Spartacus Blood and Sand games that is actually good

Rome 2 Total War is my favorite in the series. Fight me.

If you want to see a modern day Roman Empire then you should watch WWE Monday Night Raw on USA.

Gladius doesn't focus on Rome only but it's a solid SRPG anyway.

>Dat pic
>People giving thumbs down rather than an open and closed palm
>Believing the Gladiators killed each other meme

The painter needs to learn some history.

lol wat

Shadow of Rome should be right up your alley, OP.

Mine too

Spartan: Total Warrior has some cool roman levels as well.

That game was based as fuck

100%'ed that game back in the day

>ryse isn't terrible

I closed that game when I saw the fucking colosseum when Nero was Emperor.
Stupid Americans you want to make a game in ancient Rome at least check some background information.

It's a fun game.
>mfw so powerful you can bully other factions into being paying loads of gold one turn they declare war on you
>mfw cheesing naval combat
