Spear is best because of its reach. Damage isn't too important since combat is all about flinching your opponent when you get a good rhythm going.

If you go by pure numbers, then yes, and most powerful artifacts are also long blades. I prefer blunt and spears, though.

Last time I played the game as Temple character I was also sticking to hand-to-hand until I finished my pilgrimage, and it's surprisingly fun to beat unconscious people to death. Takes a while, though.

To be fair spear does shit damage compared to most other types. My argonian playthrough was boring as fuck, just kiting people and stunlocking them is not fun. Smashing someone's face in with a huge ass claymore or blunt/axe is far more satisfying. I'm pretty sure the ebony spear has near equivalent damage to an iron battleaxe actually, spears are shit.
