Modders have all the time in the world though. They work on there projects with literally almost no restraints. They aren't restrained by a budget either. They got nothing to lose.
Indies still have an announced games with a time window in place and budget concerns, and if they take too long then people get pissy, and if they run out of money then do a Kickstarter or sometimes a second one.

The problem is that what qualifies as "indie" is getting more and more vague as it became a status symbol over a description.
Like Skullgirls isn't indie at all by classic definition, but it's independently managed.
Games like Devil's Third had basically no time limit from the engine change and was completely independent at a time.
Journey is second-party where the only obligation was deadlines, but it easily got TWO.

They did it back in the mid-90's with limited internet access, no tutorials and their own wits. People of the modern era have more opportunities than ever to seek advice from experts, type in a game's name and get ripped sprite reference, and study. Unfortunately they also have more opportunities than ever to sit on their thumb and complain about things, including how hard it is to make their own things in a world where it's never been easier to make your own things.

Funny since a lot of SNK devs used to work at capcom during the days of final fight and the first street fighter, games that had revolutionary graphics and animations.
This doesn't apply to every snk fighter but at least in Kof 96-98 and the two last blades titles, every stage was made by one artist with around 6 months of time to polish it. The average indie title has a couple of artists working on the entire game and in some cases these are also the guys behind the code of the game.
But it's cooler to hate on indies and act like a contrarian I guess.
