I downloaded the free Brutal Doom which was fun but buggy as fuck for some reason (I assume because i dont actually own Doom)

Get a modern source port like GZDoom and play originals first, if you want to try modding right away get "harmless" eyecandy mod like Smooth Doom and/or that sound quality one. Needless to say, disable filters.
You might want to enable mouse-aim and disabling vertical auto-aim depending on how much of a purist you want to keep yourself, but if you want to go 100% purist might as well get Chocolate Doom instead.
