half-life it's a concept used in sciences to represent the decaying of things

In human words it's how much it takes for something to reach the value of one of its characteristics to half of its initial value.

It's used with radioactive stuff to measure how much time it will take to lose radioactivity or in drugs to measure how much time it takes for them to stop being effective.

In the game it's referred to the job Gordon Freeman had before it all started, but also somewhat a pun for most of the game monsters which are dead but still moving, being "half-alive"

I think it is a reference to Gordon as a physicist but also to the fact that the malevolent artificial intelligence has spread throughout space and has lead to the enslavement of the Vortigaunts on Xen and the creation of the Combine on Earth.

Maybe Gordon and the G-Man are part of an AI clean up agency who go around undoing the damage. Or maybe they are manifestations of a competing AI network. Valve are really interested in posthuman and singularity/AI related ideas so this makes some sense. Half life Half AI.
