100 dollars more expensive to the Dreamcast just because it had a dvd player?
It doesn't seem right to me because Xbox had and also had HDD and 720p support and costed the same as PS2

A lot of people got it because on top of playing games, it was one of the cheapest DVD players around.
>equivalent to almost twice as much money
Wait, what is this? I can't into economics. Modern things are SIMPLY just more expensive BECAUSE, right?
The Xbox came out later which made it cheaper.
But when Xbox was released ...
GTA:SA sold 20 million units on PS2
PS2 is really the responsible for Dudebro
Ok thanks that's really good to know :)
but the xbox aint got games.
no one cares about that gaylo shit
ps2 had the games faggot
DVD was only just barely getting started at that point so that seems perfectly alright.
And the xbox came out a year later.
A dollar was worth more back then essentially.
It could also be taking into account the manufacturing costs which may or may not be more expensive today.
Name me 3 exclusives on PS2 that made the casuals prefer PS2 over gamecube or xbox
You can't
PS2 sold well because media brainwashing (magazines telling people to buy a PS2)
basically money is worth less every year.
It was also a DVD player.
And they were expensive as fuck when they first came out.
Final Fantasy (X-XII)
Jak and Daxter
Kingdom Hearts
Ico
I could really keep on going
Meta Gear Solid 2&3
Gran Turismo
Final Fantasy X
Jak, Sly and Ratchet series
Inflation, as time goes by the prices of normal consumer goods and wages creep up and down but generally go up by about 3-5% per year, and if the price of food, housing, electricity and the wages you're payed has all gone up, the buying power of an individual dollar has gone down.
It's why houses in the 70s cost like 20k and cars cost $800
After all this years you are still this salty and delusional.
Bravo.
Retrocompatibility meant your bajillion Playstation games were still playable.
This
Casuals didn't buy Ico and Final Fantasy you idiot.
Metal Gear 2 was on Xbox
and Jak, Sly and Ratchet sell just a little bit 10 million combined
C-Casuals don't buy games t-that are popular!! YOU ARE W-WRONG Y-YOU IDIOT!!!
I think PS2 ads acted like some sort of brain programming
youtube.com
WTF
>"Let me tell you what bugs me of the human endeavor I've never been a human in question, have you? Mankind went to the moon I don't even know where Grimsby is Forget progress by proxy Land on your own moon It's no longer about what they can achieve, out there on your behalf But what we can experience Up here and of our own time It's called mental wealth."
>t. big papi
Tekken
God of War
Kingdom Hearts
All games casuals bought and enjoyed.
Sly, Jak and Ratchet series combined sold a little over 10,5 million units
For a system that sold 150 million units that's a pretty bad number.
but Metal Gear Solid 3 wasn't.
>casuals didn't buy Final Fantasy
then how did FFX sell 8 million copies on the PS2?
>people unironically doubt PS2 was the best of its generation.
It's the clearest of gens
>Casuals didn't buy Ico and Final Fantasy you idiot.
Thanks for the laugh.
>muh DVD player justification
This is what gamecube owners tell themselves to cope. Ps2 had the largest game library, that's why it sold so much. It only sold maybe 20-30 million in the first few years. After that point DVD players were like $50. You'd know this if you weren't 17.
It was a lunch title and had a great cover
>the highest-selling console is automatically the best of its generation
you and i both know the wii was a piece of shit m8
Jak and daxter
Kingdom fucking hearts
Final Fantasy x
Budokai
All of those were out within like the first two years.
You're fucking retarded. Kingdom Hearts is the 10th most sold on thhe PS2 at 4.7 million. 10 million is a really expressive number.
or because FF was the most popular RPG at that time.
Did I mention it was the highest selling one? i said it was the best
Wrong .
PS2 sold well because
1) Marketing
2) "wow PS2 bankrupt SEGA"
3) GTA
4) Gran Turismo
5) Fragile hardware people bought more units
It was the console with the largest, best selection of games. The others have a few great games, but nowhere near as many classics.
But the wii was the best console last gen user. At least it was until dolphin became a thing since it completely removed the need of owning one.
>5) Fragile hardware people bought more units
My PS2 is still owrking after almost 20 years and even fell from the table a couple of times
and xbox had what games?
Yeah, that shit is sturdy, but the DVD reader isn't.
>PS2 sold because of good games and somehow that's not a merit
Kill yourself.
>Casuals didn't buy Ico and Final Fantasy you idiot.
150 million units sold
You take 4 franchises combined: Kindgon Hearts, Jak, Sly and Ratchet and they all sold combined 16 million units
4 with at least 2 games in each series selling 16 million units is pretty bad.
It's funny that all those people who never got a broken PS2 happens to be in Sup Forums
In every other place on the internet people had 2 or 3 PS2s.
Yeah I guess it depends and we all have had different experiences but I'm still surprised min works fine after especially those falls
I bought mine in 2003 and it still works too. user is full of shit.
>people are still upset over the ps2 winning its gen
I bet you're all gonna carry that grief to the deathbed
Better a replaced PS2 than a discontinued Dreamcast :^)
but it had a DVD player
>At least it was until dolphin became a thing since it completely removed the need of owning one.
Dolphin emulation is far from perfect.
This.
I'm and I can tell you without any problem that I have had 3 PS3s in these last 10 years.
But really, the PS2 being the best of its gen is like the easiest gen to decide
It was Blurays it could play, not just dvd's.
It's above perfect for the games that are worth playing.
I just don't get why Sup Forums loves to tell fairy tales
"I play PS2 every day since 2001 and never broke"
"My n64 controller I use every day since 1996 and it's in mint condition"
Keep telling yourself that
Fat PS2s very rarely broke and that's a fact.
No, you retard. If the most sold game is nowhere near 150 million you can't take those dumb assumptions. You're saying more than 10% of all PS2 owners having the game is not significant?
>2000 was almost twenty years ago
>I'm edging closer to 30 having arguments with some 18 year old faggot that thinks the ps2 sold well because of marketing and not because it objectively had the largest library and imo the best games at the time.
By contrast the gamecube had a small collection of games that were OK and the Xbox literally only had halo and paid online in a time when practically nobody was willing to pay for such a thing. DVD and marketing had nothing to do with it.
>Modern things are SIMPLY just more expensive BECAUSE, right?
Because Bretton Woods system was invented by genius: 1950s buy groceries with few cents meanwhile the same groceries cost $20 USD dollars.
why is the inflation higher on the dreamcast's launch price than the gamecube's?
>But really, the PS2 being the best of its gen is like the easiest gen to decide
The weakest system
Only 3 games took advantage of the hardware because it was hard to program
cheap build quality
Early Dreamcast games and launch Gamecube title Star Wars Rogue 2 had better graphics and frame rate (runs at 60fps) than any PS2 game ever released.
>You're saying more than 10% of all PS2 owners having the game is not significant?
Considering that Halo sold 8 million for a 26 million audience and Sonic Adventures sold 2,5 million for a 9 million audience, 16 million is a mediocre number.
>evenly priced as xbox
The xbox had a decent library, nothing like the PS2 but I had a friend with one I could always play at.
Besides Halo had stuff like JSRF and it typically had the best version of multi plats graphically, gamecube ports were similar graphically but obviously lacked online. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory being an example where the xbox version was vastly superior to the PS2 version in the graphics department.
ps2 sold the best because it could play the multiplats everyone wanted, had popular exclusives and also could play dvds.
if you were only buying 1 console back then it was obvious why it sold the most.
>having choice in library is a bad thing
Everyone with a dreamcast had sonic adventure because it was the only good game at the time. You had options with the ps2 so you don't have to get kingdom hearts if it wasn't your thing.
>The weakest system
>Only 3 games took advantage of the hardware
That's contradictory.
Next to no games took advantage of the other consoles hardware because every game was made with the ps2 in mind and putting effort into expanding a game's features for less than a 5th of the market of one console makes no sense.
>ITT: folk who don't remember n64 release day
400 bucks isn't even close to most expensive.
>PS2 was the most expensive console and the least powerful
>least powerful
It wasn't
PS2 was 150 million units sold as of 2011,
Not during 2000-2005 which was the duration of 6th gen
>The weakest system
>Only 3 games took advantage of the hardware because it was hard to program
>cheap build quality
And still the best. Woah!
casuals don't buy consoles for exclusives alone, they buy what has the most games they want to play. since the PS2 had so many games, it's the obvious winner.
This is correct, the PS2 was the "winner" of the generation but it was like the fucking bad guy winning. It was a terrible system and ushered in terrible business practices that hamstrung the industry. I was OK with the PS1 winning gen 5 so it's not like I have some brand loyalty coloring my opinions, but the PS2 was just fucking terrible on many levels.
>kingdom fucking hearts
spotted the autist. worst fanbase ever. and hell some of the games combat is half decent but the people who like these games are always the most fagatronic
it should only be a teensy bit higher, because the DC came out first.
I dont know what kind of math that is
And even still the ps2 had more exclusives than any other console by miles. Not many games were multiplat back then.
Also, the PS2 was easily moddable, what caused it to sell like designated shitting bins in all 3rd world countries. Where I live nobody even knew what a Gamecube or Xbox was back then, but everybody still knows what a Playstation is, despite it never being officially released here.
because dreamcast suffered almost 24 more months of inflation
>That's contradictory.
Only three games had good hardware/fps (not that great still)
Metal Gear Solid 3, Gran Turismo 4 and Shadow of the Colossus
print more money, things cost more dollars
>Considering that Halo sold 8 million for a 26 million audience and Sonic Adventures sold 2,5 million for a 9 million audience, 16 million is a mediocre number.
That's because Halo and Sonic were all those systems had while on the PS2 you had a wide selection on genres and games to play which means the software sales spread thinner
>uses the word fagatronic
>calls others autistic
You haven't made a real point friends. All of those games I listed are immensely popular.
Isn't debt based money great?
FIAT is an amazing system
That's another reason why it sold so well in india, brazil, south africa..
Xbox had a great mod community but it was mainly in the USA not even europe.
>Considering that Halo sold 8 million for a 26 million audience and Sonic Adventures sold 2,5 million for a 9 million audience, 16 million is a mediocre number
Halo is in a console with 968 total games, Sonic Adventure is in a console with 720 total games, and those are the best selling games of their respective consoles. Playstation 2 had a library of 3857 games plus 2418 from retrocompatibility. People bought a much wider variety of games.
Kill yourself.
>Playstation 2 had a library of 3857
Much of which are shovelware.
>people think there were casuals around in the PS2 era.
Sure there was some but they weren't the market like they are now.
>multiplats
wow
you can hate on being hard to program for if you want, but everything else was good.
It had the best library. Thats it. NO fucking debate. I was a gamecube fag too and i loved it, but as far as sheer games goes ps2 had it beat. it also was the only console with backwards compatibility, and it was with the fucking ps1, who had 90% of the games worth playing from the last gen. its competition was the doomed dreamcast, the late xbox huge, and the gamecube (which was fucking great and only didnt do well because people were really self-conscious about games back then and were terrified to be pre-teen or older and own a purple toy that played mario and pokemon baby shit). Sup Forums only just started hating the ps2 specifically because of-
>grrr DVD normies get out of my consoles REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
and
>it was incredibly popular therefore bad!!!!!!!!!!!
and most of all
>sports, GTA, racing normies get away from my weeaboo, outer-space, and midevil fantasy flavored hardcore vidya REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GTA SA and GTA Vice City sold over 44 million units
80% of which were casuals.
You don't get to be the best selling console in all time by selling just to niche nerds. You don't need to streamline and pander everything to sell games.
I count 3 good games there, user
The xbox was a good system for pc ports but it's exclusives have aged like milk.
The half life 2 port was absurdly impressive though.
>but everything else was good.
Like what?
>It had the best library. Thats it.
Some hidden gems like R.A.D and Dark Cloud 2 but the rest is garbage
Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio and Crimson Skies are still awesome today. Play it on 720p or 480p widescreen on 360
yeah they were, the difference is that now vidya costs so much to make that people can only afford to make it for the casuals. unless they make a budget title that panders to a specific group immensely, AAA games are always going to be made for casuals now. that surge of reboots we got was them trying to consolidate last gen.
"we can make this game any teen or frat boy will like, and well still call it tomb raider/devil may cry/thief/etc so we can sell it to EVERYBODY!"
How many of you here played Ghost in the Shell for PS2?
youtube.com
Or Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2?
or Genji: Dawn of the Samurai?
Very very very few
what????
ok yeah bucko every game on the ps2 except those 2 were garbage.
go swim a lap in some bleach.
lol ok
I'm saying mostly games were garbage
>Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2?
>or Genji: Dawn of the Samurai?
These two were good for instance but not MUST OWN ps2 titles
>It had the best library. Thats it. NO fucking debate
No, it had the most popular games at the time which was natural as it was the most popular system. It was FAR from having the best games of the gen, though. Especially if we're talking about exclusives.
>but everything else was good
The graphics suffered as a direct result of it being hard to program for, and that's a pretty big thing when you're struggling at 480p. So, if it was expensive, unreliable, and had shit graphics... the only thing it really did have going for it was an ok controller and popularity.
The Dreamcast flopped because everyone was sick of Sega's bullshit and the PS2 was getting price cuts by the time GameCube and Xbox showed up.
