I really enjoyed playing BF1942 and controlling individual battleships, destroyers, and subs.
are there any games similar to "Naval Action"(youtube.com/watch?v=qw_R8kRd6R4) where you control only your single ship, but set in either WW1, WW2, , modern times, or space?
I was excited for the game "Dreadnaught" until i found it was a MOBA and not a singleplayer story driven game.
Don't know how much it counts since you seem to be looking for fairly realistic games, but if you're okay with more arcadey action, there's no better naval combat game I know of than Warship Gunner 2.
It has a full mission-and-objective-based campaign with what's honestly not a bad story set in a World War between pretty much the entire world versus Japan and Dutch Siberia, and the game comes with truly massive amounts of customization options for designing your own warships with any weapon configuration you manage to fit in a battleship [or carrier, or cruiser, or destroyer, or even Submarine] frame, including totally-not-nuclear weapons.
It even has boss battles against superweapons and a host of challenge modes. It's like Ace Combat, but for ships, including the part where your lone ship carrying ridiculous amounts of ammunition goes up nearly single-handedly against entire navy groups.
And there will never be a sequel.

Not the time you listed, but I think black flag is your best bet. Or rebel galaxy.

I also forgot to mention that it has a lightly branching story [although the story doesn't affect the mission structure much, it's mostly about the interludes in-between, and the ending is always the same] regarding what character serves as your second-in-command on your ship, and that the missions and challenge modes many times sub-objectives that when completed can unlock special subsystems you can equip in the system designer that range from AEGIS aiming protocols that allow you to auto-aim your missiles [if you choose to have missiles], to infinite ammo generators to the aforementioned nuclear weapons.
I really, really like this game, if you can't tell.

Black Flag was pretty fun once you get past how it's not even remotely realistic. It took awhile coming from Silent Hunter.

I love that game. I spent a lot of time fine-tuning designs for every class of ship and hunting down every single ship part.

best deal I can find is on ebay in a 4 game lot (other 3 games are shit that I don't care about) for $5 plus $9 shipping. no images of the discs and the case for it has what seem to be gamestop used game price stickers. worth the risk or should I look into emulation?
Adam Brown
PS2 emulation is usually a headache but you could always give it a shot and see.
Evan Watson
I'm pretty sure you can emulate the game, although with occasional slowdowns on the busier levels, at least on weaker machines. That said, the game is so damn good that unless we're talking outrageous amounts of money, the purchase would be worth the risk.
But then again, it ain't my money.

It's a little clunky and dated. If he's really interested in that sort of thing he should check out Harpoon or CMANO.

I would recommend Rebel Galaxy if you want a space theme. You only control one ship, combat focuses on mobility and broadsiding. ships can be customized to your liking. Story is decent with dialogue options as well as factions to work for to get different ships. Soundtrack is also very good.
Joseph Walker
how are the controls? is it actual 3D space or 2D with a space skin?

Grabbed Atlantic Fleet on sale a couple weeks ago an enjoying it quite a bit. I'm pretty shit when it comes to naval battles in Empire Total War so turn based combat suits me much better. You can tell it's only a small £5 game but it's good good gameplay and it's lasted me longer than quite a few AAA games.

Combat stays leveled with another capital ship (fighters move freely). It allows you to just turn your ship so if your shields are low on one side you just have to turn to one of the other sides so your weakened shield can recharge.

Battlestations Pacific and Midway. That was my shit back when the community was alive. >Flying in with three other wings of torpedo bombers to sink the Yamato >firing a fuckton of cannons all at once with a battleship >Being a sneaky nigger with a sub
