is turn based dying?
Is turn based dying?
nah.
going strong on portables
based atlus
arpg is the new turn base
it's a meme genre favored by reddit
Only with games trying to cater to the AAA audience. Plenty of other series have remained turn based. Cant wait for Dragon Quest XI to be better than FFXV, despite being turn based.
God I hope not
>Persona 5
>Tokyo Mirage Sessions
Nah it's fine.
I hope so.
It feels more like there are again more good turn based and hybrid games on PC recently?
And on handhelds they never really stopped. They even were relevant for bestseller games in most years.
That said, I prefer RTS, but the vast majority of those has been just shit.
Also, Divinity Original Sin 2
More people are being riddled with ADD and need to play an action RPG instead, just look at the reception of the FFVII reboot being not turn-based.
It lost one of its most ancient pillars, that being Final Fantasy. That much is for certain.
Or more plebtastic, Fire Emblem or XCOM or Civilization.
Turn based is going strong for both role-playing and strategy games.
>squeenix has trashed final fantasy's gamplay since FFXI
>All other JRPGs have remained intact for the most part, and we have plenty more on the horizon
>"is turn based dying?"
idiot
Atlus is keeping it alive
Games that dont sell lol.
No it's not with those failure of preorder numbers
I remember I died to this fight the first time playing this game, only to later find out the hoops you had to jump through to get that outcome.
Persona 4 Golden sold 1,3 million.
and that was on the fucking vita.
if you think Persona 5 won't sell you're delusional
>There are people who actually like turn based outside of SRPGs and TBS games.
For a long time, user. A long time.
Most Final Fantasy games aren't turn-based. They use the ATB system where you act depending on how fast your meter fills.
Darkest dungeon and com 2 both sold really well.
It's close enough to be considered a derivate of a classic turn-based system. Actions are still taken "in turns", the difference is only in how said turns are calculated.
If I enjoy those two genres then why wouldn't I enjoy turn-based elements in other genres?
Looks fine to me, considering it's hanging with Pokemon, FF and Tales which just recently regained its fan support.
Are you retarded or just under age?
Because turn based in RPGs is so fucking bare bones and annoying most of them don't even employ any kind of movement system
In AAA games yes, otherwise no.
Just wanted to make the discintion, since the OP is of FFX which actually is turn-based.
All in all, I think the genre is doing okay now. Even some western games like South Park and Darkest Dungeon are delving into it again.
????
Divinity Original Sin is a turn based game what are you on about?
Depends on what game you're talking about.
Yup and it makes me sad as fuck
No
Came here to post this. Good job, Teach.
Yes its a stupid idea that should die.
How it is done
1-Real time
2-When something happens, after you finish to select the action or whateaver the game automatically pause, you can also pause any time you want
>oh it's MY turn to hit you?
this crap should've never started. it gave people an idea that they deserve something.
My mistake, just double checked that. I always assumed it was like Divine Divinity.
Turn based seems to be doing fine in my view.
i don't think dying is the term, more like evolving. it's still there, just not the same as it used to be. like, horror games or stealth games, those are dying.
>thinking 1.3 million is a large number.
there's 3 million alone in the state of Oregon.
a third of oregon owns this game. lol don't make me puke
>P5
>Bravely Second
>Etrian Odyssey V
>SMT IV Apocalypse
They seem to be going just fine.
>First Turn Based games were SNES entries
>Enjoyed Front Mission, didn't like FF7 for the turn based, enjoyed the hell out of it for the story (I was in my fuckin' mid teens damn you)
>Most turn based games since then have been steaming shit.
>Never got around to playing a Persona game.
>Have been turned off near completely from turn-based games.
>Only Enjoy NuXCOM
>Xenonauts, some Civ entries and 4x overall.
I don't think stealth or horror deserved their own genres anyway.
Ubisoft took it as far as it could go IMO with Splinter Cell. Same goes for early Resident Evil & Silent Hill.
Now it's Action Horror or Psychological Horror
Or Stealth is a matured, refined mechanic adding further depth to a different genre of games. Which I'm alright with overall.
Nah, it's already dead
They're doing alright but they'll never be as big as they were during the golden age.
No, but I'm glad ATB is dead.
Games like Persona on portables and shit aren't high cost of entry games to create.
They literally only expect them suckers to sell somewhere way below quarter million. at best.
The Persona Series overall has sold a retarded amount which is why they're up to Persona 5 now dude. Person 4 Gold made them 78M alone.
For them to be cranking out entries the way they have I'm thinking their Enjoying CDProjekt Witcher tiers of financial profit.
nah, but final fantasy sure is
>turn based
>posts picture of a game that isn't turn based, but instead time bar based
gg op
what's this
Those aren't ATB bars, they're Overdrive gauges.
Go play a video game.
F O E
O
E
FF X doesn't have time bars, dipstick
Go try to tell a normie that ATB isn't turn based
>implying
you can't ruse me
>"game that isn't turn based, but instead time bar based"
>someone on Sup Forums said this about an FFX screenshot in 2016
Holy shit.
Happy loli adventures in the harmless dungeon of mystery.
It better be
You probably need to realize that because FFX came out in 2001, there are many normalfags on Sup Forums who have not even played it
...
It was re-released every year for the last 3 years.
Turn based an random encounters is just too much
Oh, I don't think I've ever played an eo game.
I probably should.
As a series sold a retarded amount lol what? Even ff13 has sold more then the whole franchise alone
FFX HD or Emulate the original?
>Blizzard King used Mirror Shield
Turn based is a design that arose because of hardware limitations and industry immaturity and now is being supported only because of laziness. They don't have much more to live and soon will stand in one line with rpgmaker shit where they belong.
But it's a Japanese game, thus they aren't going to buy it. They're normalfags.
Are you for real, OP?
HD on PC if you're re-playing, emulate if you're playing it for the first time.
Are you retarded?? FF 13 is a AAA game when Persona isn't. Persona doesn't need to sell anywhere near as much to turn a profit.
Explain why ARPGs like Secret of Mana, Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Evermore, etc existed on the SNES if it was due to hardware limitations.
>mirror shield predicted
>free setup turn
>now is being supported only because of laziness
It's being supported because there's still a market for it and not every RPG needs to change mechanics entirely just because they're open to more now.
>Comparing Persona to FF13
Oh, you're a window licker. Nevermind then.
Proceed.
Good advice, always play the original version for the first playthrough.
Start with III if you want the authentic EO experience, IV if you want to ease yourself in, or original Etrian Odyssey if you can handle a lack of polish.
Then use the word made money not has sold so much. the persona franchise has not sold for shit.
No, but going to be less popular, even niche. And its seems pretty fair, this genre is pretty stagnated and i have not seen any serious innovation or using modern tech for long time
Why would you emulate?
The battles were the least things I liked in JRPGs, specially random encounters. Turn based JRPGs is pretty fucking good in boss battles, shit gets intense, but killing fucking weak mobs that you can just gloss over any tactic by just spamming attack is such a fucking grind, specially in long dungeons
I don't necessarily dislike turn based battles but they really need to iron out some of the problems, and for fuck's sake just remove the time that it needs to actually start a battle
I think I just really dislike random encounters on top of turn based, both is a fucking disaster
Cute! CUTE!
Yes, especially since Final Fantasy, which popularized it in the west, is no longer turn based.
Am I dying?
>Use Bloody Offense
>Bloodlust procs
...
Yes, every second of every day. Live in a way where you are never regretting your choices.
This is blatantly false. There have been realtime RPGs since the '80s.
the colors remind me of golden sun.
>Completely dropped the perfect turn based system
The cinematic battles like that pic were cool as fuck as well.
above a million is big for any non AAA tittle
Games are a lot more niche that you think.
A million is usually enough to make profit for most game companies that don't burn millions needlessly into a budget for no good reason.
...
Hell the turn based system actually came from a large number of RPG's back then being inspired by DnD and other tabletop games.
But the ADB system was so much better after one game than the ATB system was after 7.
Agreed that that particular turn based system was perfect.
Are there any games aside from that LotR PS2 game that used the same kind?
Mana Khemia comes to mind
Better question is, why are RPGs so shit anymore? Trying to will myself through Star Ocean 5 right now and it's really pushing it.
On a broad term not really, ie indie games, portable console games ect. But alot of people playing video games are getting tired of the system which is admittedly out of date and opting for faster combat rpg's to get there fix. I think the same can be said for people just getting into video games that a turn based gameplay system may seem like a relic with how many different games are out now with a more actiony feel.
The sooner it does die out the better off gaming will be.
