Is there a Ys game for someone who plays for the story, or is the whole series nothing but mindless hack n slash bullshit?

Never played the series. Which one should I start with.

>ys for story
lol

That's why I'm asking, tard.

The latest games are more story driven compared to older entries. Games like Seven, Celceta and especially VIII are the ones. However they are boring as shit. VIII has more fun characters though.

Play Oath first. If you like it and finish it play the others which include Chronicles, Origin, Ark, Seven, Memories of Celceta. They are all on PC so it's easy to get

Oath in Felghana or 7

Are they all stand alone stories .

You'll miss a few small references but yes

I've played a bit of felghana and I think the boss fights are really cool, very far from "mindless". However I just can't wrap my head around the way these games are balanced. If you don't level up on random enemies the game is insanely hard, but if you do spend a few minutes fighting random enemies it gets way easier. I'm not sure if I should spend 10 hours fighting each boss or if I should level up for 15 minutes and beat the boss in just a couple tries.

>Ys
>Hack and slash

How about you actually play the game? It's only hack and slash if you're fighting stuff way weaker than you.

Leveling system is really weird in the Ark style games. Just going up one level helps a lot of you're struggling on a Boss.

I mostly play Ys for the Music. Falcom sound team jdk are amazing at what they do, and imo one of the best Video game composition teams.

The Pre Ys 7 games are pretty challenging, anything from 7 onward tends to have a better story/characters due to the party mechanic - but bosses and fights are MUCH easier. Holy fuck Lacrimose of Dana the newest Ys game has some godly music though, maybe my fave Ys OST by far and I don;t even own the game.

VIII's ost is phenomenal. Definitely the best in the series. Just shows Falcom sound team jdk is still at it.

I must resist the temptation to listen.

So far I've seen people praise Ys 8's OST a lot. So I hope I get blown the fuck away when I finally play it.

>Story

I like Ys 1&2 music but I prefer VIII more. Second best would be Mask of the Sun and Dawn of Ys. Seriously, Falcom skipped a lot of good tracks for the remake. One thing I didn't like about Ys VIII was the final boss music. It's just one of the trailer themes and well it doesn't suit a final boss imo.

Of course Ys 1 OST is great, but some of the later remix tracks of them tracks are a lot better. This is something that when other game series do I feel they just make a worse track overall with the remixes.

I don't own a Vita or PS4 just a PC for Ys, so since It will probably be 21XX before I get to play some fan project on PC like 8/Memories to experience the OST myself - I can't wait. On August 24 VIII's official OST releases, I've grabbed most tracks from early youtube rips and holy shit - cannot get enough.

100% agreed my good man. VIII's trailer music is amazing: youtube.com/watch?v=JoplNrxZWx8
Like, listen to it at least if you haven't - but Jesus the fact it was used as the final boss track? 0/10 for fitting, waste of a great track.

Also where are the good torrents for modern Falcom music at? nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=611831&showfiles=1 Is the best I can find but ~80 GiB and near 0 seeders and

>playing Ys for the story

And then he becomes Japan's Conan the Barbarian.

>Played the Origins demo and liked it so much I bought all the games avalaible on Steam the moment I finished it
>Don't have time to play them
God fucking damn
