It really doesn't, though. The game itself is rather short, and if you take out all the backtracking and arguably meaningless side characters (like Columbo), you could easily shorten it down to 2/2.5 hours.

Incorporating First and Joyful, however, would definitely be a stretch. Though both of those games can be safely ignored to begin with, so you could do a movie about just Painful.

A mini series would be great. Either that, or a longer one with an expansion to the partners. Maybe having Brad pick up what's essentially a small army of guys in the end from all the partners to find in the game. Guys like Nern, Terry, Olan, and some specific other ones from throughout the game to make more important, or closer to Brad.

I think an animated series on Adult Swim would be the best course of action though, a live-action movie wouldn't be able to really capture the more humorous aspects of its world. The Fishman village is especially goofy.

A movie wouldn't really work.
Yeah the plot is their but 50% of the gamplay is basically meeting up a bunch of weird and silly cast of characters and creating what is essentially a small army. Even if the film winded up being 3 hours it really wouldn't be able to quite capture all of that.

Maybe if they specifically focused Brad's interaction with one party member that'd might work. Like if a LISA movie would have explored Brad and Terry's interactions and development throughout the journey with 2-3 other party member joining in for the obligatory Russian Roulette scene, it wouldn't be totally faithful to the game but work far better in a film setting.

It's an earthbound like RPG made by one guy. The gameplay is bog standerd Pokemon turn based but the story and character (Brad especially) is where it really shines. Quote the emotional journey
