It's really nothing special. People grew up playing it and can't see it for what it is.

Titan Quest + expansion /thread there's no mo.

>Play newer, more refined games that have had 15+ years to build on the foundation that D2 made
>HURRRR WHATS SO SPESHUL ABOUT THIS 1???

The fucking 15 year olds on this site I swear.

People do see it for what it is, something that set the standards for ARPGs that are still being clung onto by modern ARPGs today.

kys yourselves
you need to be 26 to post on this site

having played it recently i would still be playing it if the game wasnt dead
a lot of it is nostalgia though, i dont think i'll ever have as many memories as i did in d2

...

Today in comparison to say Torchlight 2, Grim Dawn and Path of Exile it's nothing special really.

What makes this game so fucking spectacular is that every goddam isometric action-rpg is basically a reskin of Diablo 2. What they did was so good that it is still copied to this day and will be copied to the end of isometric action RPGs.

But you are right. The magic is gone by now. It's no longer impressive.

no matter how many times people post it, it will never be true

I find it amazing that no other ARPG has matched what D2 offers.

PoE comes very, very close and is a great game in its own right.

You know how old people love to say "Well back in my day we only got one game and we played it for an entire year!"
That's the ARPG genre and the ARPG fanbase.

ARPG's are dead as fuck nowadays because they ask so much time from the player. The current gaming market favours short and cheap games, and sales (especially Steam sales) make it hard for the game to keep a player's attention drawn and not have them being distracted by something new. As much as people want to believe "ARPG's are still good!", they're actually horribly outdated and not what people are looking for anymore ARPG's need to evolve. They need to cut out the excessive grinding if they ever want to succeed. Nobody has the time to finish Normal and Normal+1 just so they can unlock the "real" difficulty. Nobody wants to play through 40 levels of holding M1 before they actually get a varied set of skills.

I don't think thats entirely true, I think that a few games offer what D2 offered, the thing is just that we have come to expect so much more from RPGs because 15/16 years ago D2 set the bar sky high and these simply copying D2 with upgraded graphics just won't do

what if
arpg with dark souls combat

that would be good actually senpai

no, people playing it now can't understand what it was when it was alive and had a community in a time before you were washed over by 5000 gmaes like destiny and the division.

diablo 2 was great for the following reasons

>art direction
>variety of class builds
>variety of items and variable quality
>8 player games
>make your own game
>bargaining with people

Everything can be improved with Dark Souls combat.

>That serrated knife cut effect on the ham.
absolute art

Titans quest.

>Hold down mouse button for 1000 hours: The Genre

this game would be an amazing build sandbox if it didn't take like 6 hours to get even mildly interesting

acts 1 to act 3 is just so piss easy and boring and if you want to make something like a whirlwind barbarian you need to reach level 30 before you even have access to your main attack just to see how it actually feels to play with

once you get into it it's good but i think games like new vegas and dark souls do that kind of thing better

Why does that man shoot his guns like a toddler?

Recently I started playing and I feel the same.
I think the problem is that the "formula" is really simple and has a lot of fast gratification involved so other games that copied this concept later just feel more fresh since they are giving you similar gratification.
I guess the meta specific stuff and the multiplayer back in the day made the game really compelling but coming in now feels very lacking.

The thing is, getting loot + moving around + wrecking shit is what makes ARPGs addictive and dynamic, DS combat has its own pacing.

what class is that beside demolitionist?
also
>1 button gameplay

So Eitr?

the downside of this genre

i do if it has god tier itemization like LoD

>ARPG's are dead as fuck nowadays
Because no developer has done anything fucking different

Jesus the most original ARPG right now is that god damn Korean one just because it had the balls to put in real physics

which one?

We just need more isometric games that dont follow D2 M1 statbased gameplay

Helldivers was pretty good. Something like that with a melee focus would be fun. Less about stat crunching and more about weapon/skill

Diablo 2 had amazing sprite world , music and atmosphere. That being said its one of the few games i can actually play off nostalgia without getting frustrated with all of its flaws.

I don't even give a shit about your other shit taste but
>Diablo 3 Vanilla
>Better then Diablo 2

Fucking kill yourself and your parents for letting you post this drivel. Diablo 3 vanilla was like Diablo 2 with none of the good points and the same shit drop rate.

Diablo 3 ROS is still shit in alot of ways but actually playable because there aren't really any gear checks since you're fed better shit constantly until max level.

Lost ark

I cant for the life of me find the trailer where it shows off the physics properly, but basically you can juggle enemies

>Frost Gauntlets

I can't count how many of those i found. First time it was like oh that is nice for this level and for my Sorc then after that it basically had to start giving them away.

>start playing a bunch of ARPGs
>WASD is not the norm
I totally forgot about this and it blew me away

By default this genre should have WASD and a dodge key.

You would have had to have been alive at the time that it was out in order to enjoy it for what it was, not what it is now compared to other games.

20 years from now you are going to see a post just like this about a game that is out currently and understand what I mean.

>It's a Mephisto drops Isenheart's Case and 3 Scroll of Town Portals episode

Grim Dawn looks pretty neat. How does it compare to Torchlight 1?

Its like a loaf of pug

Why does median xl never get talked in these threads?
It has everything: unique boss fights, farming, a fuckton end game content, completely new skill trees, kind of based on diablo lore, online servers, promotes you to do optional stuff and check your gear without mindlessly leveling
I've played everything this genre has to offer, and this mod is one of my favorites

Ya, and Nay. Context is the key, and in 2000 (or whenever D2 and LoD came out), people were jizzing their pants like they do now over Overwatch.

Back then, it looked great, had support for 3D cards for some special effects, the items (or most of them) you equipped were visible on your character (of which there were 5+1!), the cinematics were grand as ever, online play via Battle.net was refined again, ...

You're obviously right in implying that it's only great because of the historical context, but that's like saying Apollo 11 was shite because of the low CPU speeds..

There's no point in judging a game from 15 years ago if you're not willing or interested in what (PC) gaming was like in that time - and account for it accordingly.

>titan quest first X number of hours
holy shit is this fucking horrendous

literally hold M1 and chug pots while going afk

I really wanted to love Titan Quest, it has such a neat character skill progression system and a great setting. Too bad the combat was ass. Say what you will about Diablo 3, but the reason why people still play it is because the combat feels fierce and physical, the kinematics of it is just better than in any other game.

Also: post your face when browsing this
classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/

Yeah TQ nailed the setting and aesthetics but totally flopped on everything else

Im going to have to grind to level 20 just to have a semi viable dual wield build. And thats the same problem with most builds except for faggots cheesing with Dream

A more modern Greek/Egyptian/Norse ARPG would be good.

Fuck me this is my 12-15 years, great memories
Sure some of it now is nostalgia googles and even without playing the 3rd it probably has some better features because of the advancements in technology, but for its time there was no better time sink, I'd still play it if I found 7 more people to plow through it

Sacred 2 is a lot of fun. Very pretty environments and it manages to not take itself too seriously without being obnoxious.

Never got around to trying it user, how's it fare with playerbase and such? Are different builds viable or I'm fucked if I misplace a point somewhere due to shitty mod bullshit difficulty?

I couldn't get past the clunky gameplay

what do you guys think of van helsing

if you haven't played it since the patches please refrain from unleashing your ire

You can reset your skills and stats anytime, it costs almost nothing
Servers had around 100 online players on normal days, I haven't been playing for a while so idk how is it now. They are much more populated on ladder resets
Community is more populated than that because most people play offline.
Every class has at least 4 or 5 base builds when it comes to skill trees, and more when you count builds based on skills given by items. Can't say every build is viable, but every class is definitely viable, with assassins having a little bit more advantage than the others

It's much better compared to borelight series.

>playing an online game in singleplayer
>wondering why it sucks

The correct way to play the game is to make a sorc on ladder, get a grush, bot till you gear an hdin. Bot the hdin for a smiter. Farm torches and annihlus charms, bot for gg pvp gear.

If you don't play online, and don't trade, the game is lacking.

>Countess won't drop that rune you need for a runeword

What's her name Sup Forums?
Mine is a fucking EL
A FUCKING EL
LOWEST OF THE LOW
GOD DAMNIT I WANT STEEL

>If you don't play online, and don't trade, the game is lacking.
>Bot this, bot that

forgot pic because I'm a cuck.

>Still no El Rune but this dropped.

God I miss this game ;_;

I want to play it for the first time. Is assassin fun?

No. The only fun class is Sorc

I heard that, can you explain why?

depends.

If you like teleporting explosion kung fu based on combo points or laying traps around, s'cool.

It was definitely something special for it's time.

It heavily influenced current RPGS and even MMOs.

Older games won't feel as fun if you've been playing newer games with more features.

>PoE comes very, very close and is a great game in its own right.

If only the fucking load times could be fixed. Have to wait 30 secs for one freaking room to load on a rig than can run most games on extreme setting and has no issue running CPU intensive games.

WHY IS EVERY CUNT WRITING KYS NOW ARE YOU FAGGOT PHONE POSTERS OR WHAT
FUCK I'M MAD

I'm still waiting for this goddamn game to get a release date

So are you admitting that it's worse than those games?

'good for it's time' is no excuse to hold up the game and say it's just as good as these newer games even if it's functionally a shittier version.

Good games withstand the test of time and are still just as good fifteen years later without having to resort to "it was good FOR IT'S TIME"

Don't listen to this nigger. Bow/Javazon is top tier fun. Slap an enigma on and you have a better sorc

Yes, edgy children with phones.

WE SHOULD BAN THOSE UNDERAGE FACEBOOK LOVING MEME FAGGOTS

Started a melee Javazone. Not sure if it's viable and which skills to pick. Should I reskill for throwing Spears?

Diablo 2

D3 = boring, repetitive, ugly.

.>So are you admitting that it's worse than those games?

are you retarded?

are classic book that established literature standards worse than books today?

i don't trust you to not get that answer wrong, so it's a definitive NO YOU DUMBSHIT GO BACK TO SCHOOL.

Droped tl after about 5 hours, meanwhile I have 200 hours in GD, might be autism tough

People like you usually like D3 so give it a try it's got a trial version on bnet

Diablo 2
