nms's devs couldn't handle all the hype around the game and were scared that saying "guys, there won't be mp, sorry" would've hurt the sales of the game. so they kept it in the dark and in some occasions straight out lied.
they wanted to get all the jewbucks they could from the preorders and will run away with them. they will barely make a few updates and then abandon the game.

So it's obvious that the game has an online archive. People will name things and you can see that but you will never see someone because you simply cannot multiplayer.
