all 3 are amazing

Dues Ex sucks so that narrows it down

Here (you) go

I liked the matrix and it made me super edgy when I watched it as a kid
I'd question everything like
"Is it even real"
So Sup Forums

Don't do that. It's dumb.

And Sup Forums

Deus Ex

Lain>Dude Sex>Matrix

Oh right I gotta pretend its good so Sup Forums likes me

I wanted to post exactly this
Are you me?

Yes, we should stop samefagging.

Lain isn't really cyberpunk, at least not in the comparison to Matrix and Deus Ex.

I don't think I have an angry enough reaction picture for this.

Sup Forums made the best 90s cyberpunk piece, but it isn't in OP

>at least not in the comparison to Matrix and Deus Ex

What's up with cyberpunk and bluish purple colors?

The Matrix was GARBAGE.

This, SEL is great, but's it's in no way the maximum exponent of cyberpunk in japanese animation.

I need to rewatch Lain again, it's been a few years.

AND YOU DONT SEEM TO UNDERSTAND

>Who made the best 90s cyberpunk masterpiece, Sup Forums, Sup Forums or Sup Forums?

Sup Forums

>Lain isn't cyber punk compared to The Matrix.
Are you fucking kidding me? How stupid are you? Did we even watch the same anime?

Lain has far more narrative integrity, the purpose isnt hinged on its genre like the other two. I really dont like much anime, but it's far better than the Matrix, only idiots think that film is good

By that, I'll assume you haven't watched lain.

Lain is the most cyberpunk thing EVER that isn't Blade Runner or based on an American novel from the 80s.

Serial Experiments Lain is the only anime I recommend to everyone.

Transmet is overrated edgy trash.
It had a good first arc and then it immediately shits the bed trying to have a shitty version of Dredd's universe.

this

A SHAME YOU SEEMED AN HONEST MAN

All good but the Matrix is best.

I dunno.

Deus Ex went to the Orange neon-esque approach and it did quite well, but I think it only works because of the contrast with the darker blue/purple in the background.

It must have something to do with it being always dark/night. Maybe to abuse the lights/lighting effects and make it look more artificial?

THIS

THIS IS THE ONLY FUCKING CORRECT ANSWER

EVERYONE ON Sup Forums THAT LIKES CYBERPUNK AND/OR CYNICISM GO READ THIS NOW

It's because golden tones were used a lot in renaissance art. The game was about the technological renaissance.

How was that like Dredd in any way? Have you never read actual cyberpunk novels?

Dark nights, rain and neon.

Not to mention dark blues were a very "futuristic" colour in the 90s.

yes

You posted Lain instead of Ghost in the Shell?

To be fair, Matrix had a lot of potential as a concept, as obviuos/intuitive as it might be.

It's not a conincidence that Japan took such an interest in it and made all those short flims on it, flashing the concep out and quite frankly doing a better job than the films did in some cases.

Can someone explain what the fuck was going on with Lain's sister

to be fair, lain is a top tier cyberpunk masterpiece, but GitS is the GOAT

Not everything set in the future is cyberpunk

Have you READ Transmetropolitan?

I can't argue against this. Maybe it's nostalgia, but isn't that the point?

Lain>Matrix>Deus Ex
I'm Sup Forums as fuck but this is an objective fact.

Is that really it though? I mean is that canon?
Do you suppose if they slapped a blue-ish desaturated filter would it have the same visual effect?

But Lain is the most purely cyberpunk of the three.

Frankly, is, along with Blade Runner, probably the most truly cyberpunk piece of media outside of written literature.

LAIN?

Sup Forums

You haven't read much of anything if you immediately associate that with Dredd. That's all pretty much standard fare for cyberpunk. If you'd ever read an actual book you'd know that.

She likely wasn't aware that the whole thing was a farce, so she was encouraged to kill herself to remove her from the picture and allow a replacement to fill the gap. The issue being that part of her needed to exist for the other to function properly, and once deleted she became disengaged (hence the disengaged dial tone she was constantly muttering).

The game has very overt renaissance themes.
All pro aug (named) npcs wear floral designs for example.

Lain is typical 2deep4U bullshit that was boring and pulled the Evangeline trick of appearing to have a deep message by actually having no fucking message of meaning at all. Deus Ex is amazing gameplay wise but the plot is essentially, "Lets throw all the tin-foil hat conspiracy theories in a blender and make a story out of what comes out of it." Matrix had an interesting premise that while done and explored before by multiple writers and philosophers to some extent, presented it in a cool an unique way that was both in depth and palatable to a mass audience. It is just too bad they didn't make a trilogy out of it to further explore the themes. Could have been interesting. Overall, Matrix easily takes the cake.

Is Mister X cyberpunk? Or does it get disqualified for not dealing with computers pretty much at all?

If you take the time to look at any of the development stuff leading up to the game's release, they even say the whole thing is renaissance themed - the clothing, the colours, the themes of the story. Hell, even referencing the story of Icarus and Da Vinci's experiments on the human body are obvious renaissance references.

if you think lain had no deeper meaning, you weren't watching the same show i did

No, they usually don't indulge to such a degree and have such obvious, goofy satire.

Callahan is basically just the opening monologue in America in a system that allows the people to vote.

>its an Sup Forums fag posts moeblob shit instead of akira/GitS in a 'cyberpunk' bread.

On Sup Forums

>posts fucking matrix retardation instead of blade runner.

So much derp

If I take that off, will you die?

Shut the f*ck up retard.

Sup Forums for sure.
Cyberpunk stuff is almost always kino though. It's a genre where crappy stuff is a rarity.

...

You didn't understand it. Watch it again and REALLY watch this time.

the 80s were better

Substitute Matrix with Blade Runner, Lain with GitS and Deus Ex with SS1(I know it's not a better game but it's made by the same team and has stronger cyberpunk themes in a more dry terrain for those games at the time.)

Oh, please continue showing your idiocy.

Lain is considerably better than GitS. The other two I agree with though.

"Cyberpunk" is basically just a way of saying "what people in the 80s thought the future would be like".

THIS desu

Here, take this (You)

Wrong. Cyberpunk at it's core is "High tech, low life". Technically a homeless person with a smartphone is cyberpunk. It's not just what people in the 80s thought, that's just where it got it's beginnings.

Isn't the Matrix heavily influenced by Ghost in the Shell?

The Matrix and GitS are heavily influenced by Neuromancer.

Nigga, watch the trailer. It's hardly subtle.
youtube.com/watch?v=Kq5KWLqUewc

>people arguing over the matrix or blade runner
>not this piece of pure kino

"I NEED A COMPUTER"

masterpiece.

I'm surprised at the response Lain is getting. As much as I like the show, it seemed to me like it had all of the high tech but none of the low life. Y'know? All cyber and no punk.

Three types of people will post in this thread.
People who prefer Lain: weeaboo waifufags who own a Vita, lewdpost on Steam threads and have never been kissed by a female they're not related to
People who prefer Matrix: Normies and 90s kids who have never bothered to update their tastes from their youth. Probably had a phase where they wore all black.
People who prefer Deus Ex: A nearly even blend of genuine patricians and "me too" kiddies who want to be accepted on Sup Forums. The latter will praise Platinum games, Metal Gear Solid and Dark Souls simply because they're popular on Sup Forums- the former will prefer titles like Star Control 2 and Doom.

Oh, yeah.
One of the few cyberpunk movies I haven't seen. Reminds me, I still need to watch Brazil.

Are there any Chinese cyberpunk movies, I would assume there has to be a few.

>i only watch arthouse memes the post

They showed the GitS movie to the production staff and said "Make it look like that." And they did. There are numerous shots in the film lifted directly out of the anime.

GitS was a much bigger direct influence on The Matrix than Nueromancer was.

ur gay

The only one that I know of is 2046, and it's not even that cyberpunk

2nd gig > Innocence >GitS 95 > SAC > Arise > 2.0 > manga

Now give me (You)s.

The Wachowski SIsters literally tell this in every single interview regarding matrix, so who knows

Well, at least you had enough sense to put the manga dead last.

Lain is objectively the most cyberpunk of the three, but I don't own a vita, don't post in Steam threads at all, and I kissed your mother just last night.

...

Nah, I've always thought the cyberpunk as the way this guy says.
When people in the sixties watched shows like Thunderbirds which depicted the future and 21st century, those shows were exactly like what you described.

>Wachowski Sisters

I'll never get used to it. I thought they of all people would be red pilled but they swallowed the blue pill so many times they destroyed themselves.

...

>they of all people would be red pilled
They actually think that matrix revolution (or which one is the third?) is the best matrix movie. This fact alone is pretty self-explanatory

It really isn't better.

>oh it's just 300,000,000deep5u user

"High tech, low life" is a nice summary of the aesthetics of cyberpunk but politics and ideology was always primary in it's inception. The suffix "punk" isn't there for nothing, it references the strong anti-government, anti-corporate, anarchistic, etc., attitudes of the genre. That is the core.

Blade Runner is the long time king

Or you could just not have shit taste.

The problem with Blade Runner is that it's not "cyber". There are no hackers, no global net, no advanced computers. It's more like "dystopian future noir" than cyberpunk.

>Compared to eachother: Neuromancer>GitS>Blade Runner>Deus Ex

>Compared to other works within their medium:
GitS>Deus Ex>Blade Runner>Neuromancer

Fight me

I prefer this movie.

>no advanced computors

>lain
>cyberpunk
