Fuck, in the french version of the game, the wind fish is called "poissorêve". Translates to "Dreamfish".
I think they couldn't make it more obvious at this point.

Yeah everyone pretty much spell it out to you. It was the "fuck you, you're going home to sit in a wheelchair" of its time, in that Link knows everyone will disappear, but wakes up the windfish anyway.
