I agree and I 100% them all. FF13 is the most solid game, and LR should have just been Valkyrie Profile 3 instead of asking Tri-Ace to reskin their game with Lightning.
SE should have just made LR into a novel or do it 10 years later. After all they had no problem doing it with FFX, FF7 and FF4.
Lightning Returns was the closest we got to a new Valkyrie Profile in a long time. That is the only reason I can't hate it.

I tried the 10 hour challenge on the original XIII, to see if it got any better after investing any time into it.
It didn't. I was going to try to last until gran pulse, but the dull combat and constant forced switching of the main character and party members got to me in a way I didn't think a final fantasy game could possibly get to me.

wasn't the ff13 trilogy made because of vanilla 14 being a disaster.
VI managed to pull that off because the plot was engaging and the gameplay was enjoyable. In XIII, it just felt like artificial difficulty for the sake of stopping you from leveling characters too fast.

Game companies spend a lot of money making the engine and assets for a game.
When they made XIII-2 they literally just reused all the art and engine and made a new story and some gameplay tweaks. It was a way to make bonus income off of the investment they put in to the engine.
I think FFXIV and FFXV are both on that engine but they may be heavily modified by this point.
FFXIII is fun.

I bought FFXIII-3 but probably wont play it until this fall. But I like the premise.

I'll take angst over pure, blind stupidity anyday. Tidus just didn't know how to properly interact with anyone or react to many things in a civilized manner. If he wasn't rambling about his personal life or endangering everyone's lives, he was awkwardly fumbling through conversation with pretty girls or making loud, annoying noises.
Just beat FF2 the other day, it has a lot of problems, but overall I had a good time for the most part. There is nothing more satisfying than coming back to Fynn and ass raping pic related later in the game.

Even then the main thing I liked was the monster hunting which was completely optional. The main story was shit and it was basically just a single player MMO.
How did they fuck up this series so much?
I'm currently on Chapter 13 of FFXIII and I feel like the battle system could have been improved by adding three small settings:
- An option to keep the camera fixed.
- An option to turn off the Paradigm Shift animation that happens every battle.
- The option to turn on and off which abilities you want the AI to use during battle.
I hate how the camera keeps moving around during battle, I hate how every single battle I have to watch the first Paradigm Shift transformation. and I hate even more that FFXII had a gambit system where you could tell your characters what you wanted them to do, what abilities they could use and which don't.
I haven't played the other two, maybe I will after finishing all the missions.
But that would impede on Toriyama's vision user!
14 uses a modified version of Crystal Tools and 15 uses it's own engine.

Combat-wise, LR was cool but the whole time limit garbage is utter shit. You couldn't even explore at your own pace.
But user, Lightning Returns is actually really good.

The only things in the trilogy that weren't absolutely awful were Sazh, Caius, and Noel
And they nearly ruined Caius by making him look like a huge faggot, and Noel by making him look like Sora
