What games are actually horribly written all around but easily dupe normies into thinking they're sophisticated scholarly masterpieces?

Bioshock Infinite and The Last Of Us.

Stanley Parable.

Life is strange and dark souls series come to mind

are you trying to say something about umineko faggot

>dark souls

Glad I'm not alone in this. The lore might as well not be there with how barely there it is.

yeah it's shit. Don't get why it's such a phenomenon

F/SN
Babby's first deconstruction of heroic character.

can you recommended me some "deconstructions" of heroic characters for seasoned adults?

I doubt anyone actually thinks FSN is a sophisticated scholarly masterpiece.

> what is Heaven's Feel

Witcher trilogy comes to mind

umineko > higurashi

A decent story by teen fiction standards.

Fire Emblem Fates. Awakening also duped normies, sure, but at least the writing was alright, not *wag wag, sniff sniff*, or ..., or GWAAARG.

Every Silent Hill

Spec Ops: The Line

1V1 ME FGT I BET YOU CRIED WHEN THIS KICKED IN

>he doesn't believe in magic

OP is one sad little fag

No but some Urobuchi dick riders think Fate/Zero is

Urobuchi has been kind of overrated since even before Madoka. Afterwards there was no fucking hope.

Witcher and Bioshock.

I've seen a ton of people who, for some reason, think that David Cage "games" are written well/have good stories.

this is from weeb shit? That's pretty good music.

Telltale games and old CPRGs

did they skip Indigo Prophecy??

No, they usually say that's the best one.
I will never understand what people see in these shit games.

No he can't because he's parroting shit other people have said to be contrarian.

how do you define "horrible writing" and what metrics are you using to say a game has bad writing or not

this is Sup Forums, all your responses are going to be colored more by personal distaste than any real objective analysis

dark souls doesn't try to be scholarly and only incidentally tries to be sophisticated by playing with atmosphere. it succeeds at what it's trying to do and that's all it has to do. this comes from someone who didn't actually like the game because i don't like the kind of game it's trying to be.

f/sn is a fun and generally smart exploration of a few different ideas of what it means to do good. it has some pacing problems and a few moments that feel forced, but i would say it generally never dips into being outright dumb.

umineko was good at what it was trying to be: a frequently-absurd fantastical murder mystery with a few themes that it never really got too far up its own ass about because the focus was more on being entertaining. if people are saying it's some sort of really deep shit, the problem is with those people; it never tries to be that.

i hated the railroading but that's more just personal distaste. i don't think the writing was ever dumb or shallow at any point. i think the worst problem was the generic cod flavor of the month gameplay.

that's a problem with the fans and not the writing

i put off seeing madoka for years because i didn't WANT to see a mahou shoujo deconstruction, but i think the tv series was actually pretty well done. again though, there's a problem with fans treating it like it's something it's not; it's a deconstruction, but it's not some great commentary on anything, it's just trying to tell a good story. i didn't watch the movies btw, so can't comment on those.

Grendel

>i didn't watch the movies btw, so can't comment on those.
Keep it that way. Rebellion is fucking terrible.

i like his games but holy shit, Indigo Prophecy goes off the fucking rails retarded later on. at least Heavy Rain stays consistently retarded the whole way through. i don't see how anyone can take David Cage games seriously if they've played IP.

In your honest opinion, what is acceptable in terms of writing?

Umineko has a fuckin fantastic soundtrack. It really is the best part of the whole thing. The story has a couple pretty good highs as well, but the ending chapters sour the whole experience by being mediocre in every way.

The problem I have with Dark Souls lore is why even bother? I feel like phoned in, half assed lore is worse than no lore at all. The games really don't even need to give you any good reason to go around fighting big monsters. I'd do that shit regardless, because it's fucking cool and fun to do so. If there's good reasoning to do so, then all the better. But having this thin piece of shit reasoning tacked on as an afterthought feels insulting and unnecessary.

Also, you haven't missed out on anything by skipping the movies. A pretty interesting looking fight scene or two, but not much else.

Mass Effect 3

For vidya? As long as it can keep a consistent pace and theme, it's acceptable.
It's nowhere in the ballpark of "good writing," but it's at least not shit.

that's what i've heard

i did feel like there wasn't enough there. i mean, look at metroid prime, that takes a similar kind of approach in not throwing lore at the player but putting it there for them to discover. metroid prime has TONS of that stuff, though; pretty much everything that moves and plenty of stuff that doesn't has at least a few blurbs of text associated with it, and there's a huge backstory that becomes apparent the more that you read it. dark souls takes the same approach but there's way less there.

but i think that's a minor qualm because the lore isn't really what dark souls is supposed to be about. they could have told you far less than what they did and left nearly everything to the imagination and i think the game would have actually been better for it.

i think the game managed to do what it set out to do, and that is to establish a certain atmosphere and "feel" to the game and build everything around that. i didn't enjoy it, but that's because i don't like the way the game plays.

Rebellion is great. Fuck off.

It's great if you like the taste of shit I agree user.

Kamen Rider Ryuki and Gaim despite being written for kids, are probably the only well written kids toku that adults can also enjoy. Both deconstruct and rip apart what it means to be a hero, so I recommend those as long as your not put off by the designs.

It is actually the opposite of that of statement that is true. If you have good taste, you'll like Rebellion.

It was a 8/10 movie till the end but then it became a 4/10 because of LE EDGY UROBUTCHER TWIST

KoTOR 2 TSL.

Anything by Obsidian really.

wew lad it's okay, one day you'll get big kids taste too

If that's really how you see things, you're probably just buttmad it wasn't a happy ending or something else fanwanky that you wanted.
Whatever you say, kiddo.
