The pre-Flynn comics' problem wasn't that it was edgy, but because fuck all hardly ever happened because the writers spent too much time on melodrama and relationships.

I liked him best in 2, CD, and 3&K. Silly and goofy, but still an obvious threat to the planet. Also all the shit he makes that you run through in those games was really rad. He kinda stopped being an industrialist businessman kinda villain until Colors.
