I'm sure you guys have heard about the class action lawsuit against NVidia for their false advertising on the GTX 970. Currently, they're working on rolling out a $30 rebate for all 970 owners if they seek it out and fill out a form. After hearing about this, I searched around and found that some people had claimed they got as much as a 20% refund from Amazon.
So I decided to try my luck and contacted Amazon customer service in search of a full refund and was able to get an 89% ($336.68) refund to return the 970. 1 YEAR AND 10 MONTHS after purchasing it. Amazon's regular cut-off to returns is 30 days after the original purchase date. I almost feel like a scumbag for sending back a 2 year-old card (albeit in perfect condition) and getting this much money back for it. I immedietaly went and ordered the MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G for $449.95
So to sum things up: >paid exactly $40 to use a GTX 970 for 2 years >inb4 OP is retarded for blower style GPU >upgraded to a brand new GTX 1070 >roughly doubled GPU performance for $113.27 >2 GPUs for the price of one
i could do this but i no longer have the 970 and the money comes out of amazons pockets so i dont want to. if i were to get the refund money from nvidia i'd do it in a heartbeat, just like how i'm going to file the claim.
Jason Hernandez
should I get a 1070 or wait for volta/vega
John Hall
>should I get a 1070 or wait for volta/vega Depends on how patient you are, and how old your current GPU is.
The Pascal series kicks ass, and it's incredibly cheap for the performance in comparison to competitive cards -- A 1070 is going to keep you happy for at least a couple years, and you can always buy another one to run in SLI if there's a significant price dropoff when the next series released.
Personally, I'd say go for it if you're running anything less powerful than a 970, but I'm not as patient as a lot of people might be. My 970 runs everything at max settings, at around 70 FPS, but now I'm using a 144hz display, so I find myself tuning down the graphics to hit maximum framerates consistently. I'm looking to get 144fps with max settings, so the 1070 was a very reasonable upgrade for me.
Blake Thompson
I'll do it thanks OP gonna ask support tonight.
Matthew Parker
No problem man.
Another heads up: To get the guy to agree to more than just a partial refund, I explained to him that I totally understand that Amazon's return policy is a 30-day window after you make your purchase, but the information about the false advertising came out AFTER my 30-period had expired. I told him I use my GPU for work purposes and that I bought the 970 because I NEEDED the 4GB of vram advertised, and that the card had given me issues because I thought that the bottleneck was somewhere else in my system.
Be sure to make them aware that you understand the return cutoff date, and make sure to tell them that this information was only made available after your cutoff date (if you purchased more than 30 days ago).
Godspeed, user
Jordan Foster
960 right now, and fine with 1080p60 not max more interested in 4k or like 1080 with downsampling at 2x etc actually waiting for the gigabyte 1070 mini because I have a SFF machine
Christopher Cruz
i've got a watercooled 980TI, is that good enough?
Ayden Rivera
You're scamming Amazon here, so taking people's property by fooling them, which is essentially stealing. If you have no problems stealing, why not go for something less troublesome?
Josiah Davis
Ahh, cool. Well, if you've been keeping an eye on benchmarks and other news, you already know that the 1070 is more than powerful enough for 4k and VR, especially if you're not dead-set on max graphics or >60fps. I'd say go for it. Who knows when the next series will release, or how much more performance we'll see out of them? An 8GB GPU is a huge leap from what you have now, and it's not going to have a problem running anything any time soon.
Parker Perez
There's definitely some funny business going on here, but OP has a point and he's putting the refund back into amazon.
Jackson Richardson
>You're scamming Amazon here wat
How do you figure? The only thing that I wasn't completely honest about is that I bought the card solely for work and that I can't live without the full 4GB GDDR5, and that's not even a big deal. Everything else that I told them was absolutely true, no trickery involved. The service rep KNOWS that the page on Amazon has false information, and I asked for a return, which I mostly got. How did I scam anyone?
Joshua Smith
>OP has a point and he's putting the refund back into amazon. Actually, that's a big detail I forgot to make super clear, if anyone was confused. I got the refund in the form of -Amazon store credit-. It's not like I jewed them into giving my money back for the original purchase. That cash is still sitting in their bank account.
And even if it WAS cash, it's not like I walked in there and pointed a gun at them. I was very polite and actually -asked- if there was any way to return the GPU.
Andrew Lee
I've bought a Zotac 970 11 months ago and it's working 100% but I've bought it from a website that isn't Amazon. Of course I'm fucked and can't do it, right?
Wyatt Martin
You can always try.
Brandon Bell
Let's say I wanted to try, which I mostly don't, what would I need to do exactly? Get in contact with Amazon?
Angel Brown
>I've bought a Zotac 970 11 months ago >from a website that isn't Amazon. Of course I'm fucked and can't do it, right? Well, Jamal was DEFINITELY a cool nigga and hooked me up, but we can't say for sure whether you can't get a refund. Where did you purchase it from?
Here's why I was able to get my refund and why the return cutoff didn't matter: >bought the 970 which was ADVERTISED to have 4GB of usable vram >news broke about the real specs of the 970 AFTER my 30-day return window expired >the Amazon page STILL says 4GB of vram >as icing on the cake, I tell him that I use my GPU for work and that I bought that particular card because I NEEDED 4GB, which I now know the card doesn't have
The whole point is that you didn't get exactly what you paid for. In your case, you purchased the GPU -after- the information about the false advertisement was made public, but you still have a case since the page you bought it from said 4GB GDDR5 and probably (falsely) still does. Give it a go and see what happens. Worst case scenario you get $30 back anyway.
Aaron Jackson
Wish I could try this, but I was gifted the 970 and I'm not sure how the guy bought it originally.
Lucas Torres
It's not really scamming. OP asked, and they, out side their own policy, decided to give him a refund.
Hell, I've had places like google express give me money just because I asked them a question about my delivery time frame or ask if I can combine coupon for a single order (the just issued me a new coupon and didn't deactivate the old ones). I've probably gotten at least 100 bucks free from them for just emailing them simple questions.
I've heard that newegg also gives people full refunds outside of their usual return policy, but only if the manufacturer is a shit that won't honor warranties.
Jackson Gomez
>have dual monitor setup >bought a 1060 >tfw looking at the back and realizing that theres only one monitor port JUST
Jackson Lee
I'm Italian and bought it from an Italian site called Taocomputer. But this refund: do I have to actually send them the card? Or do I just get some money because "I got scammed"?. And what should I do?
Joseph Sanchez
the refund is for burgers only
Although you can probably ask the store you bought from. Doesn't the EU have comsumer protection that allows return directly to the store instead of going through warranty?
Jaxon Collins
You're going to want to get in contact with an Amazon rep ON THE PHONE. Phone support tends to be a bit more of a last resort service, and that's where they're poised to give you the most flexibility in their policies and such. It's much easier for someone to tell you you're fucked if they're just typing it in a chat. Customers usually only call on the phone when they're extremely pissed off. Be very polite and express that you're disappointed with the false information on the site page, and they'll definitely compensate you in some way.
Since this experience varies depending on the person you talk to, you might not get as lucky as I did, but I can almost guarantee that you'll get more than the default $30 rebate from NVidia if you play it like I did.
You could always ask that person to let you contact the seller. It was a pretty fast process once I contacted Amazon. And no matter what, you're eligible for the NVidia $30 rebate once they tell us how to collect it.
Juan Cruz
Ahhh fuck. I'm not gonna go through this much of a hassle.
Noah Murphy
Just use one monitor with HDMI/DVI and the other with Display Port.
Gabriel Green
>do I have to actually send them the card? Absolutely, if you want more than just a 10-20% refund. I've been wanting a 1070 for a while, so as soon as I heard about this refund fiasco, the gears in my head started turning and I hoped for a way to fully refund to put towards an upgrade. Luckily, things worked out for me.
>"I got scammed"? I'd shy away from saying you were scammed, honestly. I mean, both polite AND angry customers can see great results, but you're less likely to have them be strict about policies with you if you're reasonable and not a pain in the ass to deal with.
RIP
What kind of port though? Even my 970 has triple display support. Currently using 2 DVI ports, but I can also use an HDMI and a Display Port.
Jacob Richardson
so what's the best budget card right now? the amd 480?
Jaxson Reyes
>Jamal
Jordan Diaz
no, especially not since it's way too expensive for what a mid range card should be
maybe in 6 months once aib partners get their shit together and make a decent product at the right price
Justin Ortiz
Okay if not the 480 what do I get then? I need something now.
Lincoln Green
Dunno, probably just look into getting a used previous generation card, bound to be cheaper and perform decently.
Nolan Adams
I REALLY like the GTX 1000 series. Really great performance, and it's a better dollar-for-performance value than recent GPUs to have come out. It's not really a budget line, but I think it's probably the most efficient price.
Although, the main reason I'm getting a 1070 is because it's the only high-end, dollar-efficient GPU that I know of. After all, I DO have to return my 970 by mid September, so I need to throw a new GPU in my PC very soon if I don't want to be without a computer for a bit.
>mid range card 8GB GDDR5 is mid range? What?
David Gonzalez
Is the 1070 worth it over an rx 480 / gtx 1060 if I'm only using a 1080p monitor?
I'd like to be able to get at least 60 fps at max or close to max settings in most games for at least a few years
Mason Moore
The 480 was directly advertised to be a midrange card with a 4GB and 8GB variant (for VR supposedly). It is definitely a midrange card and performs alright, but aftermarket versions are too expensive and shitty right now.
Apparently the Sapphire version just straight up sucks dick and they held back on releasing that for about a month, hilarious.
Justin Ward
I'm also really glad I returned the XFX card I got after the power draw issue came up. No way I'm risking my shit with that.
Anthony Stewart
I just contacted chat and got a full refund issued.
wow lmao
Aaron Moore
I'm already getting at least 60 FPS at max settings in every game I play with my EVGA GTX 970. To be honest, if you're only shooting for 1080p 60 FPS, then even a GTX 1060 is pretty overkill. The main issue with my 970 is that I'm having cooling problems when playing games at max settings and high framerates.
Overwatch tends to run my GPU at: Low settings, ~160 FPS | 66C with fan @ 70% Epic settings, ~80 FPS | 70C with fan @ 70%
Damn, nice.
Christopher Carter
not even prorated or store credit, I got a full refund to the payment method i originally used.
Lmao'ing @ NVIDIA rn
seriously though i think ill get a 1070 then.
Oliver Cruz
>I lied about important details and defrauded amazon how am I a scammer????
Zachary Wilson
Where do I fill out a form to get a refund?
Juan Lee
volta will probably do 4k at or close to 60fps
that's what you want to upgrade for.
1000 series are cards for suckers falling for the 720p 2.0 meme and vr memers desperate for performance boosts on their shitty overpriced gimmick hardware.
Owen Clark
That's insane man, congrats. Glad to see someone else get something nice out of this.
>I lied about important details You're probably just angry because you paid full price for a 1000 series GPU.
Can explain to me what I lied about? Literally the only thing I was dishonest about was that I omitted the fact that I also use the GPU for personal enjoyment on top of work. Either way, I spent my own money on the card, and have perfectly reasonable grounds to ASK (no, I didn't demand) for a refund.
Just contact customer service. If you're on amazon, they'll want to know the order number, but that's pretty much all the info you'll need.
Christopher Howard
Sorry, I meant where do I sign up to get my $30? I didn't buy my 970 through Amazon.
Easton Price
>You're probably just angry because you paid full price for a 1000 series GPU. No
Isaac Perez
Ahh, I see. Well, NVidia is going to be dishing out the $30 rebates for all 970s. They haven't actually explained how to get the refund yet, so you'll have to wait around for them to do that.
Do you have a 4+yo gpu and a 1080p monitor? >RX470/80
Do you have a 2/4k monitor? >hold till nvidia HBM2, gddr5 is obsolete
Are you a poor minority? >buy old gpus while they are cheap
Are you rich and a massive retard? >SLI anything
Ryder Howard
What's to stop me from contacting Jamal and having amazon ban your ass. :^)
Joshua Myers
Is anyone else having trouble with the 368.81 drivers? I bought a used factory OC 980 on ebay, it keeps crashing even though my old 960 still works fine. I thought it was an OC issue but it doesn't seem like it, it works great when I have no drivers installed at all, but as soon as I install the latest driver it fails to boot. I'm gonna try and roll back and see if that helps, sucks if I got burned and it is a problem with the card.
Nolan Jackson
...
Justin Gonzalez
Ban me for what, exactly?
Matthew Wilson
Get a 1080
Julian Ramirez
I'm back OP, just ordered MSI 1070 via prime now getting delivered in a few hours
based op :^)
Liam Evans
Glad I could help!
Dominic Ross
Nope, GTX970 1532Mhz core, if you are having driver crashes your card is most likely unstable, probably why it was sold in Ebay.
Zachary Robinson
>roughly doubled GPU performance for $113.27
Might want to snag one of these while you're at it OP
Noah Wright
You people will bitch about anything, won't you?
Fine. Massively increased GPU performance. Now tip your fedora at me and leave.
Zachary Bell
>8GB GDDR5 is mid range? What? Their 390 was mid range and this is equivalent performance and cost as much. They had to change the naming scheme and market it as budget even when it isn't to prevent an outrage.
Jaxon Russell
>being a poorfag >i can't afford thing so nobody else should be able to enjoy it
Kevin Thompson
10 series is fine for a stop gap, you can always sell it for 80% cost later. Ignoring everything else its still a better 980 ti for $400.
