How to know when they are?

Open your Map and it shows you.

I have been defending cities on my alts.
I fly there, attack one enemy, and then idle in town to get my two chests. Then repeat at the next invasion point.

Because I'm too busy playing on a TBC private server.

It was already boring as hell after the first day. The only reason to do it is if you want to gear up some alts quickly.
The whispers in the cities are alright for annoying people, but becoming a Dreadlord for only 1 minute is pretty shitty.

You get a ton of XP at the end of each Invasion stage. Actually killing mobs gives jack shit. At 93 I just got ~50% of my level from a single invasion.

Yep. The only thing you need to do is be in the correct zone and that's it. Free xp, free Nethershards, free gear.

it's hard to travel to the correct zone that's being invaded but yes, you'll have an easy time at the cross roads if yo'ure Horde etc.

Just stay near the outskirts of the towns and you'll be fine, the npcs usually aggro stuff before it attacks you. The final demon has a lot of aoe so you'll have to make sure you keep your distance from them.

You can sit in the inn if you want and you'll never die or even on the edge of the zone where no demons spawn.

it's good, my brand new lvl 11 is now 21 ish after a few invasions.
Same with my Priest went from 93 to 95 with 2 or so.

The demons scale to your level.

Don't worry user - once you "finish" an invasion for the first time, it means it won't happen again for another three hours. Just AFK somewhere for a bit and the high level players will clear it out for you.

the scale minimum is level 10

Stuck down in Florida with a toaster PC.

It' doesn't actually take that long.
The timer it displays just shows how long this invasion is available for players to join.
Once you've completed it (takes about 10 minutes) you phase out.

I don't think recommending private servers to completely new WoW players is a good idea.
If they have no frame of reference for what the game used to be, then it's easily still the best (or one of the best) MMOs on the market.

If you get an error with dlls then it means you don't have cumulative VC redistributables installed.
OpenGL renderer in options may break FMVs for some so I suggest leaving it unchecked.
