I liked him the most because he seemed the most genuinely-written protag in the GTA series; he was just some dude who'd lived a fucked up life, found himself in fucked up situations both in-game and in his home country, and seemingly riddled with severe depression among other possible mental illnesses. If you got into a foot-chase with a cop he'd sometimes shout at them to put him out of his misery or to "just put a bullet in me". On a side note, I really fucking miss being able to have foot-pursuits with cops, it was really disappointing in GTAV that the cops gun you down if you so much as move an inch with a 1-star rating.

Rather than trying to get rich or climb the underworld ranks, he was just being endlessly fucked with and manipulated into doing shady shit which just got him even deeper in it.

i liked his dry sense of humor. you could see him getting more comfortable with the city and the people as the game progressed.
