Are the MSX Metal Gear games still worth playing? I'm a big fan of the series, and I'm interested in its origins, but I'm not sure how well they hold up today

If you're down with /vr/ in general, then definitely. I played the first as a prequel (still have to playMG2, which supposedly is better) and enjoyed it

not even Kojima likes them. that's why he recycled so many elements from them in mgs1 because he doesn't expect anyone to play them

I played MG1 and it was decent. I started MG2 then lost interest but it looked like a big upgrade.

1 is very very hard to play today but 2 is apparently pretty much MGS1 just 2D.

And by hard to play I mean there's very little direction at all. Not even in a "why isn't the game holding my hand" way, but there are multiple parts where if you don't do something exactly right (and the game doesn't give you much or any way to figure these out yourself) you either won't be able to progress or you'll be put into an unwinnable situation. If you want to play it play it with a guide. You can try without first but you more than likely will turn to one at some point anyway.

Don't bother with mg1. All of the stuff referenced in mgs1 and the rest of the series happens in mg2.

MG1 is crap and has aged awfully, but MG2 is still really good.

Ghost Babel is the best traditional Metal Gear game, though.

Sure, though if you don't like trial-and-error bullshit keep a guide handy.

MG1 is kinda garbage;

MG2 is still playable (and good) if you are able to play retro vidya

It's pretty fucking incredible that mg2 came out in 1990. So far ahead of its time in both gameplay and story. mgs1 is a lot less ground breaking knowing mg2 happened eight years earlier. Shame they couldn't get a workable port on the snes.

No. If you do play them use a guide.

Don't throw mg2 in with mg1.

Yes. Metal Gear is rough and you'll probably need a guide, but 2 is actually awesome. Very advanced for its time and fun.

They're tedious and ultimately not worth all the time it would take to navigate and conquer them. Watch these instead and save yourself hours of frustration and reloading:

If you're really hankering to sink your teeth into classic Kojima, play Snatcher. It's fantastic and the gameplay is at least breezy and serviceable.

You one of those suckers who plays Metal Gear games without learning the most basic solution to every problem? Use the radio, get solutions. It's the same in every game.

The radio in MG1 is based on per room and the message is the same for each person you call in each room. And actually for one part you have to call a specific person in a specific room to progress the game but who is going to call every person on codec in every room? Same as who is going to hit every wall thinking there's something behind them? No direction is not good game design anymore than handing you the answer on a silver platter is.

You call in the room has you stuck, Snake.

The game isn't linear and the room you have to call in isn't obviously a room that you would think would do that. I think it's the part where you have to get a remote controlled missile to destroy an electric floor (which is then done in the next 3 games too) and the room you have to call in isn't the room with the electric floor or anything. It's just some side room. I feel like you're trying to dismiss the game's faults even though you haven't played it.

MG1 is bad.
MG2 is great.
MGGB is one of the best games in the franchise.

>haven't played it.
Love this meme so much. A difference of opinion or having had a different experience always calls for a 'you didn't play/watch/experience it'.

Your opinion is that people should call everyone on the codec in every room in order to be sure to progress. That's a retarded way to play a game and if that's required then the game is poorly designed.

I never said anything of the sort. You like putting words in the mouths of others, huh?

You said just call the codec if you get lost but the codec in MG1 is pretty much useless for information and what little it does do for you requires you to call it in a specific room. So yes, you basically are saying that because that's the only way the codec would be helpful in MG1.

I like the NES MG1. The palette and music is better. It's flawed but charming. If it was fixed up it'd be better than the MSX version. Maybe someday.

It's missing content and some stuff is changed. Like the last boss isn't even a Metal Gear anymore.

The games are still worth playing. They don't really have much story other than showing Solid fight Gray Fox,Venom and Big Boss.

i highly agree with this. i remember a part of the game where you (actual spoiler) have to detonate a wall in some random room that you'd never guess you have to go back to yourself. and nothing in the game hints toward that wall.

>You said just call the codec if you get lost
No, all I ever said was to call in the room you're stuck in. If a room has a gimmick a call will always explain it.
You're focusing so hard on the couple of tricky times which I never addressed or even remember. They can't be that bad. But whatever, I acknowledge that what you're saying is valid even though it was unrelated to what I said.

I don't remember codec calls ever being useful. They were vague shit like "find *item*!" without even letting you know where to start looking. And the times it was useful were when you had to call in rooms completely unrelated to where you're stuck. Actually I think the part where you call to get the remote controlled missile is the only time it is useful. Other times like when you have to find the bomb disposal suit no codec calls in any room even point you in a direction.
