So as a primary SMT fan I've decided to play the Persona games because they seemed fun.

I'm playing through 3 FES right now and it's alright. I dunno why they included shit like hama and mudo in a game where MC death = reset but whatever. My question is: will I enjoy Persona 4? I enjoy the story and characters of 3 for the most part, and the combat is decent, and will probably be more enjoyable once I have full party control.

Sure the story is Scooby Doo and doesn't take as many risks as P3 did but it is a very, very enjoyable game to play.

Gameplay wise it's a little better. I didn't like the characters at first and there's way too many anime jokes.

P4 is still harder than Innocent Sin or Eternal Punishment. Those are by far the easiest JRPGs I've every played.

They're very different in tone but that's about it. The stakes are a lot lower and the story is framed as a murder mystery

I'm not going to go out of my way to "defend" it but it's really not that bad. Only hardcore SMT purists and people who hate weebshit have any excuse for hating this game, and even then they need to lighten the fuck up. It's no 10/10 but it's a solid RPG with some social elements.

It's been a while, but the MC's appearance, the edgelord gun symbolism, the ninja dog, and that whole plot element of death being sealed inside of you by a robot. Also, the OST in general but especially anything involving Engrish rap lyrics. But yeah, I found it tolerable overall.

While I kind of liked the evokers overall, something about seeing a cutesy rounded animated character shooting itself in the head reminds me of Tails Gets Trolled

Yeah, I did. The tone isn't at all the same but to me, that's okay. It's clear the devs wanted to tell a story that's smaller in scope. The only genuine complaint I have is that you don't get to hang out with your party members outside of cutscenes and social links. If you see them around town or at school, you either get invited to do the next rank of the social link or asked if you want to do the dungeon if you still need to. You don't live with them like P3MC does in Iwatodai so I guess that's why but...eh. I liked getting a few lines about whatever that seemed different every day. They don't really get to benefit from their social link character development because the game can't assume you've done it at any one point. For that matter, most of the non party member social links won't even appear outside of their social link events. I believe most of the ones from around the school pop up from time to time in cutscenes in P3, correct me if I'm wrong. Been a few years since I played P3.
