We've now played it. Of the four Metroid games that have the least fan support (Metroid II only because it hasn't aged all that well)...which of the four is the worst of the worst Metroid game?
I kept Metroid Prime Pinball off the list because it's Pinball.
Never thought another Metroid game could come along that would actually suck harder than Other M...these are indeed dark days.

Federation Force is a dumb mediocre spinoff game that'll be forgotten in a year like the other handheld spinoffs. Hunters was pretty good when its online was still working. Metroid II is a good game and doesn't belong on this list.
Other M was the perfect storm and has left a legacy that still affects the Metroid fanbase 6 years after its release. It's on par with shit like Sonic 06, Bomberman: Act Zero and Final Fantasy XIII in terms of poor fan reception.

I'd say it might actually be better than Super. Obviously it didn't have as good music or boss fights, but the exploration was way better, the puzzles were more fun (maybe just because I've played through Super somewhere around 6-7 times now), and the gameplay was improved to be at Zero Mission/Fusion's level.

They turned samus into a maternal mother with her baby alarm going off at every conceivable second. They made a obedient puppet to Adam's ever whim. they made her have pointless PTSD flashbacks to the several times she beat the shit out of Ridley when she fought Ridley. All of her gadgets and abilities were locked behind arbitrary conditions set by Adam making you play samus as a self harm inflicting moron. No new abilities. every ability returns from Super minus a few odds and ends. Story was fucking stupid. All secrets are obvious to find and are all just missile tanks.
They turns Samus into a whiny dumb weak woman who waits on a mans beck and call instead of a badass bounty hunter that does what she has to to get the job done.
Also the controls were much to be desired with this stupid bullshit of standing still to FPS aim and fire a missile.

Other M is legitimately great at times, but is marred by being super linear, stupid story and characters, and the stupid first person shooting thing.
I have yet to play federation, but from the looks it seems to be Prime lite in gameplay, much slower, focus on multi. So it's probably mediocre single player solo, and probably pretty good multiplayer co-op.
Now of course if the next Metroid game [assuming there is one] is something like Federation Force again, I will be mad. I don't hate on FF because it's on a handheld, it's obviously not a huge title or anything. But the next system one better either be a retro developed fps, or a 2D ala Super [or even Fusion, I love Fusion].

It has 2 hours worth of unskippable cutscenes despite the writing being comically bad and every character being unlikable.
The gameplay wants to be a cinematic action game but because of the decision to make a 3D game control with the fucking sideways wiimote the whole thing basically plays itself. Everythings automated from dodging to aiming to initiating kill moves, it's all so mindless.
The level designs one long linear corridor that keeps locking behind you.
The final boss is a pixel hunt.

Hunters HAD rather shit SP but great multiplayer for a DS game. Unless you like bots or can play locally it's unfortunately now obsolete until Nintendo decides to remake it or something. Dunno about anyone else but I'd like to see all the hunters featured return in a more fleshed-out game. I think Nintendo or Retro could do a lot with them.
M2 is an early Gameboy game. Pretty good for what it was, and got an excellent fan remake at least.
Federation Force isn't much good, its biggest crime though is being the only Metroid game released in the past six years. That definitely does leave a bad taste in people's mouths, what I don't get is that something that looks like spin-off material is having a cliffhanger into what is presumably a major Metroid title. That's dumb, but at least it's not Other M dumb.

Forgot to mention the control is holding the Wiimote sideways, so you're only using the D-pad for movement in a fast paced 3D game, and if you want to shoot missiles you have to point the Wiimote at the screen, which will switch to FPS mode and lock you in place while you aim so it's usually in actual fights.
Oh and the levels and environments are 90% bland corridors with no real exploration at all.
OH OH and the ridiculous "authorization" for items to explain why Samus can't use all her super powers from the start, which is so throughly bullshit and deeming not just towards Samus but towards the player themselves, who want to explore and find new abilities NOT BE TOLD WHEN IT'S OKAY TO USE SHIT YOU ALREADY HAVE

Prime has vastly better art direction, but they could benefit from more 80's style if they do an other one. Mostly just harsher shadows, equally detailed but more fundamentally simple designs, harsh shadows, oddly colored environments. I want Super Metroid's aesthetic in HD made by designers as capable, creative, and skilled as Retro.
