It's very borderline, I suppose. But it's just on the edge of kind of weird. I mean, they lived together with her dad for what, five years? Almost ten? If they'd been older it probably wouldn't be a big deal, but given that it's during their development to adulthood, it stands to reason that they'd still be perceived as brother and sister, and that's effectively how they were raised.
But I agree, it's very tenuous. But the fact that it's made so tenuous seems like a convenient excuse. I mean, they could have just been childhood friends or next door neighbours or something.

Marrying your first cousin is legal and accepted by Japs. They don't consider it incest. Brother/sister stuff is just otaku pandering because the most female interaction Otaku have is with family and they're sexually repressed.

This game is complete shit. What the fuck was I thinking hoping it would get better when I was already 10 hours in, then 20 hours in, and so on until I finally dropped it in the final city during the tournament. Fuck this game, seriously. It's complete garbage with literally no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Music is shit, gameplay is piss easy and so also shit, story is shit and goes nowhere, there's no character development, there's no challenge, the world is boring as fuck, the graphics are garbage even for a PSP game, just fuck this game and everyone who shilled it.
You'd be glad to know that the theme goes nowhere interesting and it's 100% b-b-b-but we family clichè all the way through. In fact nothing in this game goes anywhere, it's one of the most mind numbing, generic pieces of shit I've ever played. Drop it before you waste more time.
What exactly would you suggest as an alternative, in terms of modern but traditional-style JRPGs? I've been enjoying this, Bravely Default and the Lunar PSP remake even though they're all cheesy as fuck. Or maybe because of that, actually.

How can you enjoy this game? Maybe you're still at the beginning, but trust me, the game goes nowhere, nothing improves in this game, it's 40something hours of the same identical shit.
If you like old school jrpgs you should play Grandia 2 which is quite similar, it has very fleshed out npcs (better than TitS as they have multiple and actually funny-interesting conversations most of the time unlike TitS where everyone has the same long winded generic bullshit to say). Grandia 2 also has better battle system and the characters are less generic as fuck overly polite kiddies and more fun and interesting. Grandia 1 is the same shit but it's more classic in terms of story and characters and gameplay isn't as refined as 2 obviously.
Disgaea has a similar combat system but it's way deeper and more complex, but it's a very autistic game.
Another great modern but traditional jrpg that really stands out is the Persona series and especially 3 & 4 which I highly recommend.

Already tried Persona, not quite what I was looking for, but thanks all the same. I prefer mainline SMT, but it's also radically thematically different from what I was looking for.
I'll have a look at Grandia, I guess. It's nice that it's out on Steam now, but it's a little sad that it's just a port of an old game.
