I totally forgot about this. You do this in one of those shitty gmod hl2rp servers and the madmins would have a fit.
>30 fucking minutes of unskippable "walking simulator" before you get to actually start playing the game
Fuck Half Life 2, it's guilty of the same sins games are crucified for today.
Indeed, say what you want but I think textures in Source games are still pretty good.
in many ways it almost looks more realistic than many engines from the last 10 yrs, because it doesn't make everything look all weird, shiny and plasticy
fern thread?
Something about custom CS:S maps are just so fucking comforting. It's the perfect mix of gritty and comfy.
FULLY
MODELED
CERVIX
Half life 2's Graphics hold up phenomenally well.
And like said, it looks so comfy, because unlike engines like fox it doesn't try too hard and oversaturate shit.
it's just her vulva and her vagina you fucking idiot
you don't know what a cervix is
Dear Concerned,...
>it looks so comfy, because unlike engines like fox it doesn't try too hard and oversaturate shit
What an interesting way of saying "The lighting engine is dated and shit by today's standards.
...
what's it like ignoring suspension of disbelief and refusing to immerse yourself in the suspense of it all?
Sadly that comic has not aged well.
So is someone going to fire up a server, or not?
I feel like going on a comfy roadtrip across the beach to Nova Prospekt.
Well done for missing the point entirely!
They also got lighting right.
YOU HAVE CHOSEN
OR BEEN CHOSEN
THERE IS A RED STAR IN THE NIGHT SKY. THE BLOOD OF MORTALS AND THE BLOOD OF AGES. ALL WILL BE CONSUMED.
THEY ARE COMING. THESE ARE THE FINAL NIGHTS
Source does indoor areas really well. Outdoor areas look pretty bad since Source is all about hard corners and geomectric shapes. You can only make places that look like cramped apartment blocs.
There's so many subtleties to Half-Life 2's atmosphere that I can't put into words. No other game gives me the same feeling as when I'm traveling through the canals or driving on Highway 17. It's just... wow.
...
The outdoor maps look fine enough in Insurgency and Day of Infamy and episode 2 had good forests for the time
Yeah I forgot about that. Episode 2's White Forest was nice.

fuck off crowbcat
Is this what we are calling long sequences of no gameplay these days? "Immersing yourself in the suspense"?
If I wanted that then I watch a movie. Even mediocre movies do that sort of thing far better than HL2 did.
For fuck's sake, it's 30 minutes of nothing but walking forward and watching unskippable cutscenes, and a few loading screens for fun, before you pick up your first weapon in a FPS. Anyone who wants to defend that sort of shit can go fuck themselves.
I know. It's that blend of eastern European comfyness in its cold, soviet era, brutalist architecture and that both exciting and depressing idea of a post apocalyptic world
it's and improvement on HL1 were you just walked around a tiny carriage for 10 minutes
>if I can't be shooting things it's a bad game
kys faggot
>brutalist architecture
>in HL2
I'm either too tired to remember anything or you're full of shit
You could just skip the chapter you fucking human car accident.
shit meant to reply to
think you replied to the wrong guy, buddy
...
>pic related does not scream soviet era brutal efficiency and cultureless design
there's a massive fucking building you blow up that looks like a big stick
Well you probably don't remember shit because the game is full of that wonderful commie bloc architecture
kek
y'know, these are just regular commieblocks, not the best examples of brutalism
>KELLER: rape her
Why is this making me laugh so much?
kek, underrated post
the intro to hl2 is garbage and a huge letdown from HL1
people compare it to the opening train ride in HL1 but that had a purpose, it shows the mundane life of gordon freeman before shit goes real and more importantly it's like a third as long
Hl2 opening is mostly about how gordon freeman is the most amazing person on earth that will save humanity, a completely bullshit retarded plot development that wasn't set up at all in Hl1 because all he did in that game was shoot a couple aliens/marines and fail to actually save or talk to any of the civilians
hl1 was as FPS,hl2 was a source engine tech demo to show off the lip/face movement and physics engine and that's why half the game is listening to people talk about babbies first sci-fi plot and stacking crates. as an actual game it's one of the most disappointing sequels of all time
>tfw still no mod that recreates the original storyline
but mom told me not to listen to strangers
world geometry/props and characters are different scale
16 hammer units is 1 foot for geometry but human characters are 12 units to 1 foot
that's why Gordon is a manlet
Pic related is one of the first results for Brutalism and screams the citadel
you're just being needlessly arbitrary in your definition
brutalism is the aesthetic, or lack of aesthetic in architecture built around efficiency with no regard for artistic expression
you are wrong
I don't think you know what brutalism is
that dude has huge feet
You do know Half Life 2 is a FPS, right? What the fuck else should you do in a FPS but shoot things.
Oh, right, sit through obnoxiously long unskippable cutscenes. That's 10/10 gameplay, apparently. Really "immersive" and "suspenseful". Definitely more immersion and suspense than you could ever get from some actual fucking gameplay.
>it shows the mundane life of gordon freeman
It made Black Mesa look interesting and mysterous as shit what the fuck are you on about?
>screams the citadel
pic related is made of concrete, citadel is steel and glass
materials are important when defining architectural style, user. I got no brutalist vibes from the citadel
Half life 2 is fun for a playthrough but on my second it was just a bit boring.
Half Life 1 however is a lot more replayable despite still being a fairly linear game
I'm not quite sure why though.
>i got no brutalist vibes from the citadel
speak for yourself
architecture is open to interpretation and the citadel lacks any kind of design or style, it's just a very tall building, used to monitor and control the city, that's pretty brutalist in my eyes
this only made me remember what a shame it was about Pripyat in CoP not being fully developed.
I think the combat is just better. HL1 combat is still fast and tactical, HL2 is pretty much a chore
HL1 felt more gamey if that makes any sense at all
HL1 plays better than HL2 and has a lot less downtime.
And you know what they say about men with big feet
They have to buy big shoes
the intro is the best part of the game though
The style and setting they were originally doing during early development was just grimdark and to the point of absurdity, that doesn't really work well when you're ultimately trying to make a fun shooty game
What we ended up getting is much better, far more subdued/grounded (which I feel makes it more effective than what they were originally going for) and more importantly everything doesn't just look brown/gray
even if all those people say things like "the source engine doesnt have good graphics" but the source engine will have so many little details others dont, different materials actually looking different and not all having reflections, water movement, PHYSICS like collision and weight (cause most games butcher it), and the gloomy lighting always feels cozy. also love the animations, seamless when compared to most games that lazily have clipping floating objects, weird collision boxes
almost forgot the great lighting, never thought how much of a plus it is until you see games with light nodes on the floor for ceiling lights
SOMEONE FIRE UP THE FUCKING SERVER
I love half life 2 and I don't care who knows. I think it is also a lot better than episodes 1 and 2
I agree about the grimdark part, I would have liked to play the extra levels though, like the the arctic base, the weather control, the air exchange and stuff like that
most of the stuff was probably going to be adapted and recycled for Episode 3 but >never ever
Episode 2 is pretty fucking good stop being a faggot
Why don't you, you fucking dickwad.
yes, server pls
>tfw third world connection
never said it wasn't but okay
bruh im gaming on an old macbook from 2009 with a 350kb/s download speed
fuck you on
That is the game.
Brutalist literally means flat concrete slabs friend, not 'made by a repressive government'. It's more than a building being ugly and functional, many Brutalist buildings have aesthetic flourishes.
So fucking great memories with that game.
Then you probably aren't cool enough to play on the server anyway user
>the bit with zero gameplay is the best part
come on we're all nerds here
gordon's actor is already dead
its setting up the story you mongoloid. yes its a first person shooter, but it's got to have reason.
>when Half-Life does it it's "immersive"
>when The Last of Us does it it's a "le movie game XDDD" despite only having 1.5 hours of cutscenes and a multiplayer mode that's still active today
The state of this board.
>speak for yourself
He did. He literally said "I got no brutalist vibes". That statement is entirely personal and not a broad statement.
>start new game
>start route kanal chapter instead of the intro or red letter day
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
when I was in Ukraine literally every apartment had this kind of enclosed balcony. not one was open. not one
are you trying to imply this website is just a hivemind? those two posts right there prove it's a split board.
it's also hard for me to immerse myself in a third person game
>when Half-Life does it it's "immersive"
Because unlike that other game you brought up, in Half-Life 99% of the time you're in control and in first person
>Sup Forums is one person
Please fuck off.
It holds up well because it was patched to look better years ago. What you play now isn't what it looked like at release.
God the whole City17 section from the first part of the game is so fucking comfy. I loved every bit of it.
Yeah but most of us are the cool hip trendy type of nerd with faux hawks and I just don't think you're cut out to hang with the big dogs
Haven't they said that they decided to scrap the original setting because of how hopeless it was.
Like you weren't saving anything by fighting the combine
>faux hawks
come on user it's not 2009 anymore, why aren't you rocking a dyed undercut?
Because I'm spearheading neo-geekchic user. I'm so ahead of the curve it looks like I'm two steps back
>there are people that prefer pic related to what we got
>be Slav
>be raised in place like this
Oh sweet childhood memories.
If you were a cool person you and your friends would have dressed up as the resistance and run through the buildings yelling about Freeman.
Half life 2 is older now than I was when it came out.
