What went right?
What went right?
a lot
Everything. I have no problems with Doom that stop me from enjoying it. The game is near flawless.
What didn't?
We have this thread every fucking day.
Cool concept, good gameplay, good level design, a great community creating so much content, and cool developers but that's debatable
2016 > Original
ripping and tearing
Nu-Doom is unnecessarily great. How have both the new Wolfenstein and Doom been excellent FPSsDoom clones? So happy about this. Looking forward to Shadow Warrior 2.
The better question is what went wrong?
In Doom 1 I honestly can't really think of anything. There's room to bitch in Doom 2, but Doom 1? No.
wew, have a (You)
everything, doom is a masterpiece
>Shadow Warrior 2
>Looking forward to USE MELEE IN A FIRST PERSON GAME DAWG with Borderlands ARPG gun drops and randomized maps
Shiggly diggly wiggly woo, anonymous.
>USE MELEE IN A FIRST PERSON GAME
Why is this considered a negative? It works just fine in games like Hexen and the original Shadow Warrior.
What went right?
Doom 2016 went right. Except multiplayer but who cares about that.
In both games it isn't something that's pushed as much as the choppa in the new Shadow Warrior. It's more of a "Your melee attack isn't complete garbage" rather than a focus.
The action. The worst part is how close it came to being a perfect new Doom game, but it's still really damn good. If all the levels kept the open nature and keycard hunting of the first 5-7ish it would've helped, and being PC exclusive so you could have more enemies at once would've helped, and completely ignore the fucking multiplayer entirely and shit on Snapmap and release a normal level editor and you're getting closer.
a lot of things. despite being a modern game and yes despite not being on the same level as the originals, It does a lot to try and keep the combat fast paced and uses the qte kills as a way to use standard modern FPS mechanics but still encourage you to keep the action going instead of ducking and waiting for the red jelly to go away. the weapons were mostly satisfying to use as well.
Multiplayer in the original Doom was excellent and still is.
If gave nu-males a form of Doom they could handle.
What can I say, I'm a bit of a curmudgeon. Don't care much for multiplayer.
>achievement for beating Cyberdemon in Doom 2016 is called "Shoot at it until it dies"
>what went right
They didn't try to make a Doom game, they made a Quake 3 + Painkiller game
What went right?
>to finish him off you have to glory kill him
>a form of doom they could handle
honestly seeing someone on Sup Forums talk about game difficulty makes me laugh knowing how bad at video games almost everyone here is.
but then again people just come here for the memes and shitposting so of course they dont play games
>what went right
Miyazaki was busy working on a much better game and didn't waste his time with this one
Memorable areas, despite not having as many memorable characters as DS1 it still had more than DS3, some really nice looking items, easier but still enjoyable gameplay.
My first playthrough of new Doom was on UV and it was just right, died maybe a few times per level. I feel like an outlier.
>Mfw I thought nuDoom would be okay
>Mfw it was fucking rad
i haven't had this much fun in a long time
The weapons, the movement, the level designs, the character designs, and most of the gameplay choices went right. The only things in my opinion that went wrong were the forced use of glory kills, locking you in rooms every five seconds, and the super shotgun feeling pretty lame.
What is your favorite pwad and why?
Pretty much everything except level design, that pile of rubble, the floating volcano and deadzones when walking.
Why the fuck are there no deadzones while running but only while walking?
UV D44M is pretty easy. I don't think it's uncommon.
hence the almost. There are people here that are average or even good at a lot of games but so many people here are just fucking awful. I'd say that alone is why I don't take peoples opinions here seriously. It's like if people here say a game is shit and it turns out to actually be shit then it was a coincidence because the poster in question probably couldn't make it past the title screen.
Yeah, it's why you usually don't take advice from fighting game threads or moba threads, pretty much everyone there is ass.
this to be honest
Ultimate Doom is great, DOOM is lame
I like Quake 1 more than Doom.
user please we're trying to have a reasonable conversation here
Half of Hexen's weapons are melee. You're right about the original SW in that the sword isn't just a shitty backup weapon and is in fact a viable weapon from start to finish; I've even done sword only runs and it's fun as fuck.
What WAD is that?
Also how do i make her to punch things
There might be a clue somewhere in the post if you investigate you might find it!
Nigga the WAD, not the pk3. I know it's Demonsteele.
nigga thats an official map
I uh
Uhhhh
Hmm...
YOU'VE BEEN DOWN TOO LONG IN THE MIDNIGHT SEA
tfw someone posts your webm
you need to use ironmaiden mode i think its the bfg equivalent
It's got fucking waypoints, user. You can't honestly be implying that D44M throws any punches.
I beat nu-DOOM on UV so I could 100% the game my first run like God intended. Does that make me a casual?
I suck at classic Doom but I found that to be a cakewalk
I did this. The annoying part is not being able to go back for some secrets and you have to restart the mission to get it.
Good gameplay + built in level editor
nigga fucking every game now uses waypoints and as fucking retarded as people here are I wouldnt be surprised if you faggots couldnt find your way through the game even with them.
Angry Satanic atmosphere that conveys a very Hellish feel.
Weapons beyond the pistol are powerful and fun to attack with.
Enemies are distinct and deadly. (Could the Aracnatron or the Arch Vile even be put in a game today without giving the kids nightmares?)
Fast paced and challenging.
Doesn't bog down with story telling. It's an actual game you can sit down and play for a few minutes or all day and have a great time.
Actually sticks to it's horror theme and does not let up.
Turn notifications, waypoints, compas and all that pussy shit off, casul.
>mfw 'Kill three Barons of Hell with a single trigger pull'
BFG?
>They are rage, brutal, without mercy. But you. You will be worse. Rip and tear, until it is done.
>Rip and tear
>mfw
I love how they turned a line from such a stupid comic into something so wonderful.
It was fun and I liked how it never stopped. That being said, I played Wolfenstein The New Order after it and preferred the latter.
>nigga fucking every game now uses waypoints
Is that a good thing?
railgun + siege mode + quad damage. Double jump and then charge. So fucking satisfying.
>mfw mastering gauss cannon
are you retarded? it's just a normal thing now. yes its garbage but a big name game isn't going to be made now without it and the point is I'm saying people here are so bad at video games that they probably cant find their way through with waypoints.
in reality this wouldve looked cool to us back then
You can also turn off the stagger notifier
snap map is shit tho
how is this game still fun? like it feels as classic as tetris and even more replayable.
why don't games feel like this nowadays?
okay?
Different era, different standards.
That's one thing the game did pretty well actually, most of the problems with the game could just be turned off or ignored. Just finished an ultraviolence run with no runes, secondary fire modes or upgrades to see how necessary that shit was. Pretty tough but not unlike classic doom ultraviolence.
did you ever even finish doom 2? its the spirit world
>1993
>Doom
>lots of malleability
>current year
>Doom 4
>no modding
Almost everything, maybe the only thing I would have added are some more bosses
Golder age of video games.
Developers had P A S S I O N
Nowdays most of them are looking for a profit.
Runes arent remotely necessary especially considering double jump was item-granted
Secondary fire was hit and miss though. I love cycling through the options and spamming them, but gauss cannon is retardedly strong even on nightmare
Speaking of which, the difficulty options scaling is quite bad. UV to nightmare felt like NG+2. I finished UV with like 6 deaths, 2 from falling, 1 time from barrels and once per bosses so i felt like nightmare would be a sizable challenge. But instead I got my ass handed to me every 10 or so minutes
>1993
>Video games come in big boxes, with tons of cool stuff in them
>maps, manuals, cards, posters
>2016
>Game is a digital download, you own shit
The gauss cannon siege mode is the one side weapon I did regularly miss when it came to dealing with mancubi and summoners, but it was nice to not have those overpowered choices and actually have to prioritise ammo conservation.
Missing the point. Don't pretend like that game would of been successful if those things weren't available. D44M isn't designed well enough to get the approval of old Doom fans. It's mostly propped up by normies.
Besides, without the waypoints you're wandering around an empty as fuck map until you stumble upon your designated fighting arena, not that the game isn't fairly linear anyways, but those waypoints are there to hide how fucking lazy the devs were. The fact that waypoints can even serve a purpose to begin with makes it shit.
doom 4 was decent
would be way better if:
they removed the 12 enemy limit, at least on PC
no denuvo so it could be moddable
snapmap was an actual map making tool
also the level design was mediocre and some rune combos were broken
What really bugs me about this is that it's even that way on consoles. Games still come in cases with CDs, but when you put them in your consoles, you have to go through an install process, and there's usually updates to download.
Handhelds are all that's left that offer a true plug in and play experience.
>D44M isn't designed well enough to get the approval of old Doom fans.
/vr/ and zdoom and Doomworld forums all disagree with you.
It also got speedrunners from the Doom community happy with it too.
The only people it didn't win over in the Doom community is purists, but they aren't happy with anything besides vanilla.
Youre right though, I agree. Making it a multiplat trying to win halo and cod fans really hurt the game.
Its like FO3 v. New Vegas all over again
>1993
>Video games come in big boxes, with tons of cool stuff in them
>maps, manuals, cards, posters
Wait, what? Doom came with that stuff? I don't remember that.
Nah. I was raised on the original Doom and Quake. New doom is exactly what a modernised sequel should be in singleplayer. And I have no problem navigating with no compass, you just need to use the map every now and then to get your bearings like the old games.
IMO it was pretty perfect. Loved every minute of playing it. It kept the feel and fun of the originals and the action was fast. It would have been better PC exclusive though since more enemies on screen would have maybe added to the intensity and feeling of power you have. But I don't think I had so much pure fun playing a game in awhile.
Its not though. On top of my mind the biggest offender would be movespeed. Youre fast but not doom-fast. Others would be monster design, and the atrocious extent of character unlocks. Secret hunting broke my immersion, its just too much.
Its still a very good game, just not pure crack cocaine
>Everyone on this board of several thousand people is stupid except for me!
Yea UV was a really good difficulty, there was maybe 1 or 2 parts of the game that I died at more than 3 times. I cant remember the mission but it was a smallish room fight right before the cyberdemon. That was the only part of the game that probably gave me an actual hassle.
>/vr/ and zdoom and Doomworld forums all disagree with you.
Yes, those entire communities are obviously touting that it's the best thing since sliced bread.
It's better than all of the shit that has come out lately, but that doesn't make it great. Good maybe, but not great.
Movespeed i'd dissagree with, the game has far more of a focus on verticality and varying heights than the old games, even Quake 1 and 2 as evidenced by the double jump and way map design takes advantage of it. The rest of it I can get, i'm still mad at the Cyberdemon design but I love the new hellknights, barons and mastermind.
12 enemy limit is only in snapmap, not in campaign.
Moving doom fast would not have been a good decision. This game is a lot more like quake and painkiller than doom, and they correctly adjusted movement speed for that type of game.
>New doom is exactly what a modernised sequel should be in singleplayer
Wait until Blackroom comes out, faggot.
never ever
You acted like you were the voice for everyone in your previous post so that's why I contested it user.
It was pretty accepted by the Doom community overall.
It's definitely different and not vanilla Doom, but I don't think this is a bad thing.
Maybe if they do a Doom 5 they can refine the game further.
I thought it was a good game personally.
>e4m6
You can fuck off
It stands up on it's own and I am contesting the idea that the Doom community rejected it.
It got the approval of old and new.
Not the best game, but a good entry and didn't ruin Doom.
Really, I havent finished Wolfenstein since picking up DOOM. The pacing of DOOM was just unreal for me.
How's nightmare? I'm still itching for more. Is the difficulty a significant jump? What made it harder?
>E4
>In Doom
Ultimate Doom has a fourth episode called Thy Flesh Consumed.
Well yeah, who do you think you fight before the champion?
