In the midst of all the boring AAA games lately, and the lack of anything SUPER notable coming from paid indie games lately, we always have freeware.
Post free shit you've found, post videos of Saint playing Johnny or whatever, talk about how newgrounds is garbage or shill your itch.io. Let's just talk about free shit.

Actually, all of that dev's works are freeware.
A classic.

Here's a list I've had for a few years.
pastebin.com
That's a pretty good list, user.
Recently remade as Pharaoh Rebirth Plus (not freeware), but the original is still a pretty good freeware metroidvania.
OpenTTD

Holy shit, this is neat.
Is Underhell freeware?

Is it free?
That OST is severely overrated.

Oolite
I really like this game but everyone I suggest it to never makes it through the tutorial before they call it lame. It keeps getting progressively more difficult and the last stage is challenging.

Holy user these take me back to my high school years goddamn.

its seem to be just a demo but its fun
Tower of Heaven is probably one of my favorite flash games that I've ever played. The art style is beautiful, and not to mention the OST, which is absolutely incredible. I truly wish that it becomes at least somewhat recognized at some point in the future. For how short it is it's amazing.
Pretty good(if flawed) metroidvania.
Dev did their best to translate it to English, so go try it now.
Same; I've played most of the games on that list. They all are excellent.
...
Maldita Castilla, little game inspired by Ghost and Goblins.
Came out in 2012 and I never heard about it until I saw some random video from some guy I would watch a few old RPG long plays.
Apparently the dev is trying to re-release the game with a paid version on consoles with a few extra minor features, but the original is still available and free.

Here's a nice old thread that went on for a while.
Oh shit nigger, Desktop Dungeons is fun. I forgot all about it.
Super mario crossover that capcom sfvmm game meat boy and pretty much anything from nitrome could be added to this list
I found this in a random thread a couple months ago.

Enemy Nations, probably the most city builder of RTS games
enemynations.com
Anything with multiplayer?
Warzone 2100, most advanced automization, defense and artillery system I've seen in an RTS, also has a great SP campaign. Shares a lot of elements with Earth 2150. Also has multiplayer, but I'm not sure how alive it is.

RADICAL
Clonk, pretty much a mix of Worms and Settlers. Goes all the way back to the mid-90s, but it's pretty fun especially for multiplayer. Just don't try to play it like an RTS, the Clonk AI sucks ass. Clonk Rage is the most up-to-date version to get, Clonk Planet the one with the most varied content, and then there's also OpenClonk which is trying to be kind of a modern reimagining with more minecrafty elements.

Are you trying to pirate commercial version?
Don't
Free version that they call "alpha" is better
Games developed by people who have a love and passion for games are better than cash grabs shat out by corporates and money grubbing indie devs, news at 11
In all honesty though, it's weird how some of the most fun games are made by one or two people in their spare time for free. It's also really weird how some attempts to monetize them have failed. Like, does anyone actually like Cave Story +?
Yes because IIRC, it's the 'full' game and has more content.
Tunnels of the Underworld, kind of a sidescrolling UT-clone with spaceships. This one is great for local multiplayer, it's a team-based arena shooter of sorts, and there are tons of gamemodes and weapons. There are also tons of options to customize nearly every property in the game and it supports up to 4 players locally, and up to 60 AI pilots in addition to that.

My nigga~!
Red Alert: A Path Beyond and Tiberian Sun Reborn, essentially standalone mods of C&C Renegade, just with RA/TS units. Sadly multiplayer-only, and mostly dead outside the weekends.
seriously
don't bother
free version will carry you for years by itself both with it's roguelike progression and it's own campaign "something-something lothlorien"
"Full" version they remade in Unity and while art is nice overall experience is just diluted by pointless maps and various pointless whistles
i played free Desktop Dungeons a lot and got so fond of it i gave them money to develop fuller version (they made kickstarter like campaign for this except it wasn't on kickstarter)
Then they spent 3+ years doing fuck all and releasing a game that at the end just didn't want to play and would rather play original game
Some of the links are dead and the games could use descriptions, but it's still a pretty good list.
SDK is free now so yes.
Also, mah nigga
Does anybody remember that adobe flash Guitar Hero game where you can play any YouTube video, and it had scoreboards? I know it's Facebook tier, but I have been trying to find it. Does anybody here know?
this list is ancient but pretty good
BallisticNG, it's classic WipEout just on modern PCs, for free and on Steam. Still in development, devs are currently working on online multiplayer.
store.steampowered.com
barkley is a masterpiece
JamLegend?
Game is dead btw
Off-Peak by Cosmo D
It's one of the weirdest games I've ever played, and also a walking simulator. There's no story in plain sight, but you can kinda pierce together something from interacting with people. It's a must play each year because it just keeps pulling me in, and the soundtrack is godlike.
cosmoddd.itch.io
And who could forget Liero as well
this game is great
*Forgot image
I found this Japanese game a few years ago and thought it was neat. It's a 2D platformer, but the levels are on the sides of 3D cubes
No, it wasn't that. I remember the camera was more similar to Guitar Hero, and the video was playing in the background. I know the game name might have had the word "Hero" in it. I know it's on Facebook (tried searching there). The reason I'm trying to find it is because the idea was interesting, and I wonder what obscure songs people might play on it.
Huh, didn't actually know about that one yet.
The Dark Mod, Thief on the Doom engine. It has everything old Thief had (aside from the more mechanical/steampunk stuff from Thief 2 I guess) and more. Driven entirely by community created maps, but there are quite a few campaigns among those as well.
thedarkmod.com
bump for interest
If you're into RPGMaker games, this guy has translated them all.
I haven't played a single game on this list that's shit. I especially recommend The Witch's House and Blank Dream.
Teeworlds, awesome arena platformer with grapplehook gimmick. Multiplayer only, pretty good amount of players.
Marble Blast Ultra, previously Xbox Arcade exclusive, ported to pc for free, their site seems to be dead though. Here is the latest version.
mega.nz
There is both multiplayer party gametypes and a collection of singleplayer campaigns.
OpenRA, opensource replacements for the now freeware Red Alert, Tiberium Sun, and Dune 2000 games. Multiplayer and singleplayer, free data download including optional music or movies.
Project Reality, really cool Battlefield 2 mod thats standalone now, recommend reading the manual as it does rely on teamwork and a lot of it.
Rayman Optimum, may be illegal who the fuck cares, best version of Rayman 1 with all the additional content including its music and other things just plain disregarded in the sold releases on GOG.
Tribes 2, basically Tribes 1 with better graphics and a bunnyhop script. Very fun game, pretty dead though. I have recently been able to get a game going with 5 people but not on a gametype I enjoyed. Use TribesNEXT for online.
oh nevermind their site is back online
Army Men RTS is a real-time strategy title that lets you take command of your favorite little green soldiers to take on the Tan army and defeat a defecting Green general. It has all the traditional RTS elements such as resource harvesting, base building, and commanding armies of units around the battlefield.
GUN GODZ
What's wrong with Cave Story+
Mostly the fact that Pixel gets jack shit from profits and there's not that much new content to speak of to deem it worthy of buying that can't already be accomplished via modding the original.
