I would've rather a interim-Council that ruled the Horde until Thrall's return or they decide to elevate Baine or Saurfang to Warchief.

Giving Sylvanas leadership of the Horde when they were the only race in Vanilla to start out at neutral reputation with all the other races due to their lack of genuine loyalty to the Horde is insane.

This is from the end of one of the last two branching chains in Stormheim. The cutscene wasn't in but its pretty clear what happens. Sylvanas made a deal with Helya that included capturing the valkyrie goddess so Heyla could force her to make soldiers for her.

The whole point of Sylvanas' arc is that after using the Forsaken/Horde as her weapon against the Lich King, shewas staying in the background and using it all as her shield against death and eternal torment.

By making her Warchief, Vol'jin's final act efefctively forced her out of the shadows and into the spotlight. If the Horde dies, she dies with it.

I can see only a few routes to go.

1: Slyvanas redeems herself and proves her loyalty to the Horde through some sort of sacrifice or commitment to honor

2: Slyvanas dies (fully) a matyr protecting the horde

3: Slyvanas becomes the next Garrosh/Lich King

From what stands now the 3rd seems most likely given her character at present, but I doubt people would give Blizz a pass making Slyvanas a villain and raiding yet another horde Capital.

If they're smart they'll try to pull off the first direction. This expansion seems to explicitly be about redemption (at least for Illidan and probably others) so it would make sense for Slyvanas to do something noble or come to protect the Horde. She could arrogantly lead a splinter faction for a patch or two to face the legion on her own and by her own rules (plagues included) and then get rekt and saved by Baine, Thrall, and Lorthemar. After she could do something noble herself to pay them back and find that being a member of a team isn't terrible after all.

It would be simple and not difficult to get right but it might not be interesting. But it's really one of the few ways the could justify her becoming Warchief

It's Anduin's fault Garrosh got a chance to go back in time in the first place.
