Explain

Post webms OP

youtube.com/watch?v=hWBUdgIa0oE keep in mind, this is a GBA game.

Remember having fun with this game and actually looked pretty good for a 3D game.

I'm pretty sure it was just using pre-rendered sprites and backgrounds.

bumping

OP was all sprites

Holy shit.

Conker had stupidly detailed skyboxes considering how fucking blurry they usually were in 64 games.

None of them were mirrored either, just one one continuous image.

>comic sans

What black magic

How the hell did more games not do this

>Music resets every time a scene changes

It's Conker's Pocket Tales all over again

I think it would be harder to point out what isn't TECHNOLOGY in this video

All of GTA IV. How the fuck did Rockstar fuck up with V?

youtube.com/watch?v=f9BCf56A0cE

where?

>dat dempsey roll

>Recording your television with a camera

That's some cutting edge TECHNOLOGY right there.

V had plenty of technology of its own while having a bigger and more visually distinct world.

"Ahhh...yes... time to wander around.... aimlessly!"

Conker has pretty god-tier texturing in general

Toy Story 32MEGABYTES OF POWER for Genesis.

>While having a largely empty world filled with boring wilderness that feels like literal griding to get from point A to point B with only the south portion of the map and a small portion of the north having any actual content

GTA V is a let down, my man. The entire focus of that title was to push the Sharkcard and not a new game. They improved some things enginewise, some graphics, but they downgraded everything so it'll be easier for kids/casuals to play.

But GTAIV also felt empty and boring, on top of being ugly.

I don't give a fuck if you consider this game good or bad, V has technology where IV didn't and viceversa.

...

that a goddamn GBA game

>V has technology where IV didn't and viceversa.
This is true, but IV is more comfy. Things are tighter, the city is much more expressive, and things like limb damage and actual vehicle damage existed. V is the perfect example of "larger map doesn't mean better"

1983 (NINETEEN-EIGHTY-THREE)

youtube.com/watch?v=gmvWxG2zvs8

>Comfy
There's that word again. V had vibrancy, variety actual COLOR, nature and distinct looking city areas. IV was an ugly city that largely felt the exact same, even San Andreas did a better job with its world.

>comfy

Can we just word filter this to "I'm more familiar with this scenery because I grew up in a shitty area"?

youtube.com/watch?v=wFwbfN18x0I
still have a hard time believing this is real, I feel like I need to track down an original cart & a GBC to play it on to be 100% convinced it's real

...

Looks like shit deus

That reminds me of Chain of Memories opening cutscene. It seems trivial now but having a cutscene like that in a GBA game blew my mind.

youtube.com/watch?v=HyD3Ph75LaQ

GTA IV had color. There are actually settings in the menu for Saturation, Contrast, and Brightness that affect the feel of the game. By default the game was set to "brown and bloom" which millions of people played in.

This is an old PC screenshot on the lowest settings. It does no justice to the game when it's in motion. During sunsets the map will turn amber with soft purple backgrounds. On a clear day everything is bright and colorful with the distance skyscrapers coming off with bright blue hues.

Negroe I'm from L.A. V does a good job of making fun of L.A., but IV is just tighter, and was way more fun in multiplayer.

In V I'm left with running accross massive empty areas just to get to anything fun.

End you'reself brah.

>Negroe I'm from L.A.
lmoa

yeah, technology thread !!

Fish Files, for GBC : incredible color palette thanks to a tweak

...

Is it true this is a cleverly implemented raycasting engine? Like Doom?

Toy Story Racer on GBC
You have to see it to believe it.
Pre-rendered background

youtube.com/watch?v=T5bnqk0rahk

Can you even emulate this game?

Alone in the Dark GBC
Same technology as Fish Files

You can on just about any smart phone as long as it has an accelerometer. There's a free emulator on iOS and a paid one on Android that support gyro.

I remember this, it's pretty impressive that they put a whole movie on a GBA cart

Idem with the Addam Family

Largely due to it being such a late n64 game that storage prices went down so they could put better stuff in.
Imagine how good n64 games would look if it had a disc drive.

V-Rally 3 has been made on the same engine as OP's pic

WHAT THE FUCK

No. It uses skewed and rotated sprites to draw 3D surfaces.

He's probably 14

>one movie
Try two senpai

>that fish-eye effect

how in the fuck

I had a GBA and don't remember any 3D games.

Imagine playing this on a Micro

youtube.com/watch?v=Mgg4_3-sG9g

HOW

It's in 240x160 resolution and heavily compressed.

You can emulate these carts so maybe you want to see just how bad that looks.

Fuck that fucking flying Robocop dick.

Horrible framerate, massive compression.

i recall trying to find the shrek one and not being able to find it

>Imagine how good n64 games would look if it had a disc drive

Truly, we live in the dark timeline.

Games would not look better.
Just have more media and content.
That is developers could make FMV cut scenes instead of animating them in game engine.

But didn't the n64 developers have to fiddle around with textures cause of the low space?

Also keep in mind Conker came out in 2001.
At this time DC was a thing and the PS2 came out a year later.
SO essentially games would not look better than the competition.

Not because of the low space but the lack of ram.
Thus the Ram expansion was introduced.

Back in the day 3d assets didn't take up most space on cartridge it was the audio/video media used.

Now imagine playing Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time with long ass loadings and shitty prerendered FMV

Ah, thank you for the info. I always like to learn rather than getting a "no thats wrong, stupid".

I guess one game that benefited from the low media space was Banjo-Kazooie, since it gave us the funny and genius "mumble talk".

Skybox is literally just jpeg file. Why are amazed that they put a hi res jpeg image for skybox?

No he's wrong. N64 games had issues with textures due to developers struggling to get decent memory speed from the thing (but also partially due to cartridge space). Giving the N64 more RAM doesn't give it more speed. Conker didn't even use the Expansion Pak.

N64 used a single channel unified memory system that could only be access by either the CPU or GPU at any one time (with priority given to the GPU). So as you can expect, unless developers were good at using the cache inside the CPU there was a lot of stalling.

Furthermore, the RAM the system used had amazing bandwidth but terrible random-access latency. What that means is that if data wasn't read or written to the RAM linearly there was a long delay period (in electrical, not human terms) before the RAM could be accessed again. So to get around this developers would have to dynamically defragment their RAM so that the data was stored in the RAM as linearly as possible. Most developers didn't do that since it was too hard.

Add into that the extra pressures from having to live-decompress assets from the cartridge (particularly if you had a small cartridge) and well...you've got a fucking difficult task for programmers to deal with.

This is why the N64 games that are poorly programmed look like garbage while the games that are programmed well (like Conker) look like lower-res Dreamcast games.

...

There was a patch floating around last decade that let you use the D-Pad instead, and pressing B made it rotate faster.

>tfw haven't used it since then and still remember the filename
Look up ind-wwtc.ips

Holy fucking shit.

Some guy on the development team for this game had to have been some no-name that was literally Carmack tier.

I bet he didn't have trouble finding better work after this.

Not true 3d. Its the same as the original doom with how it works.

We know that
it's much better looking than doom or any other mode7 thing though

boktai a shit

i agree

The in-game font was all Comic Sans

What is people's problem with Comic Sans?

I always thought it was neat how Nintendo managed to make a game like this despite having no 3D experience

Sega had experience making 3D games like Virtua Fighter, Sony bought out other studios making 3D games like Psygnosis and Eidetec, but Nintendo somehow made one of the best games of all time themselves despite having 0 experience

take that back motherfucker

kojimas worst game

>somehow found a decent camera angle for 3d platforming, a thing that most games at the time couldn't do
>somehow made it fun to explore and traverse each stage, despite this being the early 3d era
>made okay models, still good for a company with supposedly zero experience

Incredibly impressive for the time.

heh.............it was nice knowing you, but it's time to part ways................................

Does solstice use one of those chips with extra channels?

youtube.com/watch?v=1PdW6a77kEk

Here's two

youtu.be/0KN6LrihSAs?t=27 This is the kind of shit you'd normally see on 32x, but done on the regular Genesis instead.

youtu.be/sBUhDrnVvdg?t=168 More impressive N64 stuff has already been posted in the thread, but hot damn that polygon count on the cars.

>I always thought it was neat how Nintendo managed to make a game like this despite having no 3D experience
Same, it's as if they pulled this 3D witchcraft out of nowhere. Truthfully all the work they've done before Mario 64 probably culminated to this. Think about their relationship with Argonaut and the tinkering with the SuperFX chip. Nintendo was planning something big. Huge.

Meanwhile at Sega, mass confusion about how to bring Sonic to 3D. Luckily for Sega, Yu Suzuki's AM2 was hard at work on new things.

>Does solstice use one of those chips with extra channels?
nope

>nobody posted Driv3r

Snap. Looks like ps one almost

The GBA port was pretty damn impressive. Hell I already thought Driver 2's GBA port was impressive as it was, but 3 went even further.

youtu.be/3lA-ov8L66s

Someone post the Crysis nuke

...

sure it played like a turd but I've yet to find a more visually impressive 3d gba game

youtube.com/watch?v=1NwVI2QDbfQ

I know posting arcade games is kind of cheating but it still blows me away how Sega superscroller games looked this good in the fucking eighties
