Is it necessary to play this before HR?
If so, what mods should I use to make it as good as possible?

HR is a prequel
Id say to play it vanilla (GOTY obviously)
the graphics are already great but you can also install Deus Ex Revision on steam
it's prequel and play it vanilla with hd textures mod for higher resolution
>Is it necessary to play this before HR?
No, but it's a game you should play anyway.
>If so, what mods should I use to make it as good as possible?
I like New Vision. Avoid the "Revision" mod.
Shifter is good at removing small annoyances. You'll also need a multicore processor fix if the game is running too slow or too fast. There's a couple out there, take your pick.
>Avoid the "Revision" mod
why?
GMDX. Makes gameplay more balanced and less clunky - for example, doing an Environmental Resistance/wearable gear build is viable in GMDX, but not in vanilla.
revision stuttered during the opening scene and then crashed when paul started talking to me and i couldn't hear his dialogue.
yes, but play the PS2 version.
Play goty version with a no-cd exe.
It will fix the resolution.
Yes, I'm serious. Steam version is that bad.
It runs badly and makes many unnecessary changes. I wouldn't recommend it for a first time player.
>their PCs couldn't handle The Revision
holy shit, are you guys playing on Pentium IIs?
Human Revolution is a prequel, but it throws a lot of references to the first game. HR works a standalone, but the ending in particular won't make much sense if you haven't played the first Deus Ex beforehand.
For the first game get Deus.exe mod.

It fixes all the issues with running the game on modern rigs while keeping the core gameplay and other stuff intact for the vanilla experience. I haven't played the fan rebalances / remakes like Revision, Shifter or GMDX so I can't comment on those.
hi revision dev
I've heard it's a problem with the engine, it can't handle that many objects at once in the level.
Not too necessary. I first played Human Revolution, then the original Deus Ex and I haven't get lost plotwise.
I didn't see a problem on the Steam version of DX-GOTY
You don't need to play it before HR as HR takes place a long time before it. There are references here and there, but nothing major.
It's not necessary, but it's a good way to see where consoles and the popularization of video games has taken us.
It's the best games in the series. Honestly, you should play it and just ignore the rest.
Use Deus Ex New Vision

>muh high res textures
fuck off. new vision doesn't stay true to the look and feel of the original, and shouldn't be used on a first time playthrough.
i used it the first time i played it, what now?
I don't care what you did, I'm talking about what you shouldn't do.
