The cut off date for Microsoft allowing vendors to support new hardware on 7 is actually only a little bit more than a year away, and of course Microsoft has already disallowed vendors from adding support for certain new hardware features on older versions of Windows.

If you're comfortable with living in the past then staying on 7 may be acceptable to you, but you'll be living in the past just like the guys who kept their Amigas. Windows has had a good run, but its time to let it go and move on for the good of the PC as a platform. Linux is the only answer for desktop computing going forward, its only going to become more of a niche product and afterthought for mainstream focused companies like Microsoft and Apple who have to chase the average user who wants a braindead simple tablet or phone and no longer has any interest in a full powered PC.

Does it actually delete the partitions? Microsoft's installer has always been broken and overwritten MBR with a broken Windows-only version but last I knew it didn't know or care about any partitions other than the fat32 or ntfs ones you give it.

Ah well even if it does one more reason to not give Windows direct access to your hardware and if you need to run it keep it locked in a VM with a GPU assigned to it.

There's pretty active communities on reddit, the arch wiki is a good resource even if you don't run arch, and for gaming there's gamingonlinux. Your best bet for major commercial software like games or game engines is likely to be Debian/Ubuntu and their derivatives. I believe that both Unity and Unreal both have support for their dev kits on Linux.

VMs are a decent way to initially get your feet wet, but it really works better the other way around, run Linux on the hardware and confine Windows to a VM so your can limit its access to network hardware.

There are a few Chinese made systems with open source firmware that are either certified by the EFF or close to it and as a result allow for complete auditing. These aren't normal PCs and can't run anything other than specially compiled Linux distributions. As with NSA Linux intelligence agencies need actually secure systems but that security comes at costs that the vast majority of users who aren't paranoid like Stallman aren't willing to take.

Quick and dirty something like linux mint would give you a solid OS - it's an offshot of arch but with everything handled by them instead of asking to manually install what you want. So it got all the basic stuff you would want and thus saves a lot of time for starting out.

Ubuntu got also infested by tracking spyware, arch isn't something i would recommend someone new. I like it myself though for building absolute minimalistic .

That was only in the default 'Unity' interface that almost nobody uses, and they were forced to pull that 'feature' out months ago.

Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Gnome, none of those versions were infested with spyware and they all offer the same level of compatibility with games and frequently higher performance than with Unity as well.

Lots of people will suggest Mint, but its an extremely poor choice if you're worried about security and they've made a number of bad choices that hurt their compatibility with software from the upstream repositories.

Its really too bad Windows is closed source, if it was open like Linux is people could just take the kernel and DX12 drivers and port the classic Windows desktop to run on them and everyone could move forward with the better alternate versions of Windows just like everybody just ignores the main version of Ubuntu.

The worry has never been Microsoft. The concern is that Windows 10 leaks information like crazy and makes the jobs of malware authors wanting to log keystrokes, or capture screenshots, or bypass your paywall all that much easier and of course if you use the Windows Store Microsoft will even have your payment information conveniently stored on your system for anyone who gets access.

As evidenced by the recent leak of Microsoft's back door key that they wanted to use to lock out the possibility of boot-sector malware their ability to secure your data can't be trusted.

There are kernel level pieces of the malware that none of the user level tools can do anything about. Most notably it is believed Microsoft provided a way for checks of and downloads from their update servers to bypass the Windows paywall which exposes the system to potential man in the middle attacks that you may not be able to do anything about if you allow Windows 10 direct access to hardware. The only really safe way to run it is as a guest in a VM on a known secure system with code that can be audited.

I don't care so much about the spying.
My main complaints are:
1. With the amount of spying and ads it should be free like android, yet they still expect me to deal with activation crap.
2. W10 and UWP are the first step in a very obvious plan to lock windows down like iOS.

I don't run Windows so it doesn't worry me in any way other than the potential for more relatives machines to be destroyed by bitlocker malware, more of their credit card numbers stolen, and for them to become the victims of identity theft.

Like I said, nobody cares what Microsoft might be doing with this stuff, but once those tools are in place in the OS they are there readily available for abuse by more malicious groups.

after october of this year, updates for windows 7, 8 and 8.1 will all all be bundled in one update per month. this allows them to push more bullshit without us being able to cherrypick what we don't want. we can either choose to allow windows to update or never update again. they'll be pushing windows 10 on us after this, we're not out of the woods yet.

Is the OS freely moddable? Can I choose what updates I can install, or do they come in big bundles that Microsoft forces me to use all at once? Does it run through my data and sell it to advertisers? Does it turn on features that I want off? Does it change settings behind my back?

Not unreasonable, we know they've had similar deals in the past. You actually have as much to worry from NSA data collection if you're running a pirated copy of an older version. One of the revelations from the Snowden leaks was that Microsoft's deal with the NSA allowed them to distribute intentionally compromised versions in the hopes of penetrating targets.

Other intelligence agencies seem to do the same thing whether they have actual deals with Microsoft or not.

Windows 10 actually steps up Microsoft's ability to gather information and update your system, while at the same time reducing the amount of control your have over your system.
