You've not played I then, and since its the same combat system I'd presume this applies to II.
Str is good because the MC needs strength to do damage (he has no magic, so would have to rely on a gun if he does the have strength), but it is very underpowered compared to magic. Anyone who has played I and II know that electric attacks, and to a lesser extent ice attacks, should be your main attacks, because they make the enemy miss a turn. That's without going into the damage they do.
