Fewer jump scares, more actual tension.
Most horror games will have you knowing that a jump scare is gonna happen, regardless of your actions, and it'd be better if the horror game had you actively working to prevent the jump scares, mounting tension in the process because you know a single fuckup will get you rekt.

Considering how the recent Silent Hill games have practically derailed the franchise, the fact that Silent Hills is dead, and that horror games have become pretty stale, I think the world would deserve a classic Silent Hill game.

Resident Evil REmake HD sold like hotcakes when it was released couple years ago, to the point that even Capcom were surprised, and just had to push out RE:0 HD out at record time, and even finally start creating the REmake 2.

So yes, there's still demand for oldschool survival-horror gameplay. One with great story, great atmosphere and soundtrack, plus less jump-scare centric scares would just be a big plus.

Make the game entirely about ghosts and you can only fight them off with a salt shotgun and an Iron lance, but you must find their bones and burn them otherwise they'll keep coming back. The game is full of subtle jumpscares making you too scared to even walk down a hallway. Subtle, out of the corner of your eye kind of shit that makes you uneasy. Your environment changes when a ghost is near. You'll hear crying, singing, or see blood running. Once you look a ghost in its eyes you only have the option to fight it, but it respawns after a certain amount of time. As you progress through different levels the ghosts get more difficult to ward off and respawn faster and faster. The object of the game is to find the bones of each ghost, there is no marker there are no hints. The bones could be a single tooth in a toolbox or a randomly placed skull. You have to keep a constant eye open for either ghosts or bones.

Also the ghosts teleport and are black shadows. You get nothing but a candle, salt shotgun and an iron lance. The combat is similar to resident evil but set in the 1800s in a victorian era town, thats cpmpletely deserted town with some horrifying secret. As to why everybody died. You read journal entires as the game progresses, but they don't give hints to where the bones are, only the mental state of everyone before.

everyone and their mothers have played SOMA. It's literally the most over-hyped and -rated flavor of the year "horror" title, since it was from makers of Amnesia.

And just like Amnesia, SOMA was just another downgrade gameplay- and horror-wise from the Penumbra -games.

Loved it, but mostly for the aesthetic and philosophical shit. The only times I was ever scared were the two sequences where you're chased by a teleporting enemy and you could argue that those were pretty cheap jumpscares.

Environment/enemy design also seems pretty generic (let's just slap X-Files ooze everywhere!) compared to the announcement footage. Sound design is GOAT though.

Why does nobody lile silent hill homecoming? I find it just as eerie as The Evil Within.

Are you kidding? The gameplay demo at Gamescom is a Outlast / Amnesia-tier hide and seek simulator. Those kind of games appeal to the lowest common denominator. They keep saying there will be weapons but the gameplay they've shown so far does not inspire me with the upmost confidence.

Soma is amazing. I wasn't even mad that didn't got "scarred" by monsters in the dark. The ideas and questions that the game game presents left me scarred about the human condition and the fragility of what we call "self"for days. I think it was a much more creative way a game could disturb and scare me than digital zombies and ghosts popping out.

Silent hill homecoming to this day is one of the only 3D horror games that even remotely makes me uneasy. The other two are The evil within and layers of fear.

I don't think it, or any of the characters have a name yet.

Make a game where you're trapped in a tear in the fabric of reality. The map constantly shifts around, each room is different from the last The only constants are you and the monsters, which are either the wardens of the beyond trying to keep you out, or creatures trapped there as well, the time they've spent there warping them into twisted shapes and forms beyond comprehension. Each type acts differently, with the wardens being able to follow you between rooms, but as a result being far slower and less dangerous than the warped. The warped are faster and can kill more quickly but also can't follow you between rooms. Each type also has different ways of avoiding them, so you have to constantly adapt throughout the game to deal with both the enemies and the rooms themselves.

Especially if you enjoyed SH1 (still my favorite), you shouldn't have much trouble with 3. Not to mention 1 and 3 are very closely related plot-wise, so there's even more reason to slog through it.

I do admit that the mall and metro at the beginning are kinda meh, but then again I find even SH2's apartments pain in the ass to run through when replaying. Both 3 and 2 greatly improve after the slow start though.
