>old school JRPG
>fight boss that will no doubt be on your team after you defeat them.
>uses strong attacks spells
>has at least 5x more hp than you.
>finally defeat them and they join your party with shitty stats, equipment, and spells/skills.
Old school JRPG

>jrpg
>get into enemy weapon cache
>"we can't use them, they belonged to the enemy"
I want a game where you can steal the enemy guns and find they are absolute dogshit, which is why you can kill them by the hundreds.
What's a game where this happens?
I can only think of Beatrice from Final Fantasy but she's still pretty strong for the short while you have her.
What is Chrono Trigger for 700?
>strong boss character joins your party
>he's just as strong as when you fought him
>JRPG
>A high level hero of legendary strength joins your team early
>Completely stomps in battle
>Almost immediately scaled down due to plot reasons into a glass cannon that takes a percentage of his own attack damage most of the time and can't act on half his turns
>You're stuck with him
>It's only temporary
That's one. Breath of Fire 2 also does it.
Cthulu saves the world
>said strong boss character later sacrifices/jobs it due to the plot.
>ends up being the strongest character in the party
>Boss joins you
>Except for his HP, he gets even stronger than when you fought him
Fucking Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.
What is wrong with this at all?
If a boss had the same HP and level of abilities as a single member of your party the fight would be anticlimactic and over a in a couple of turns max. If a new party member had 5x the health and a far stronger abilities than anyone else in your party they'd ruin the balance of the game and make the rest of the party members obsolete from thereon out.
Wha...what game is this?
What game did this happen in? You always find a chest with a weapon in a room that looks like an armoury.
Stella Glow for 3DS.
Many thanks, user. You truly are the king of kings.
It's not "wrong", but it feels forced when you're aware they're doing it for exactly that purpose, it's basically gameplay-story segregation which is generally annoying
For the perfect opposite...
>Party member becomes boss at some point
>they have a shitload of HP and higher stats
>but they keep using low-level equip and weak attacks
>has boosting/healing skills
>never use them or use them inappropriately, losing pointless turns or not recovering HP while they are struggling
>it's vulnerable to statuses such as poison and debuffs
>has skills to remove them but they are never used
Fucking Samson in Beyond The Beyond. I never finished it, does he ever get uncursed?
>Party member becomes boss at some point
>keeps the same HP and stats
What's even the point?
>Lose your best character so far through the game
>MC starts learning his moves on levelup
My point was that, even after receiving a stat and HP boost, said bosses keeps using low-level equipment and shitty skills
Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean 3 off the top of my head
He fucking better, 11 hours in now and he's at the point where getting a critical hit drops his health by a third. Most of the driving force behind the plot so far has been trying to get him uncursed, he's practically the protagonist at this point
they could give the boss some gimmick item/reason that makes them a tough boss that gets destroyed at the end of the fight so they get toned down for your party
Has ever a JRPG featured a boss fight against an AI-controlled enemy party?
And I don't mean just 4 human enemies, but an actual party that tries to act like player characters.
Anything with a Team Rocket-esque plucky miniboss squad?
Suikoden
Dunno if it counts but I could've sworn one of the Tales games had you fight an enemy party made of heroes from the previous games.
Suddenly being weaker for no reason just feels off, it's easy to solve this with just being a difference of levels, like a party of level 20s fight a level 50 character and later on when you get to level 50 he's around your level of strength.
Does this count? you're fighting the MC of another game in the series with demon minions he can recruit.
There was a whole recurring gag in the Mardek games where there was another party that thought they were the heroes who kept on fighting you
I dunno if you wanna count that though since it was just a series of flash games that mocked the everloving fuck out of a lot of standard JRPG cliches
Yeah, those are good enough examples
Titan Quest. Enemies would drop all the equipment they were carrying. The game just automatically hid poor quality items.
Just about every Disgaea game features a recurring boss who isn't much of a threat, and later helps out the party.
Best example for a "team rocket" type 'villain' is Axel from Disgaea 2.
Bravely Default. Several times.
Most Shin Megami Tensei games, though they generally still have all the skills they had during the fight, just having far less health
>1v1 fight
>battle system isn't designed or balanced around 1v1 fights at all
I've always wanted this to be a reaction image and it's finally happened
In SMT Soul Hackers there are several points where you fight Devil Summoners who summon a party of their own just like you can
This cool motherfucker in particular just summons whatever the hell you have in your party already and whoops your ass in a mirror match
>final boss is a 1v1
>it's so easy that you can win with a fucked up character holding shitty equipment
I didn't use Uzume much during the game unless she was forced for story reasons
>JRPG
>world-famous and widely feared fighter joins your party
>he shitstomps on everything
>gets his power sealed away by plot and gets scaled down to an average party member
>by the end of the game your entire party will be stronger than he was
>Final boss is a 1v1
>He literally just fucking drops dead even if you don't bother attacking him
>Party member from first game becomes tragic boss in the second
The first fight would of been cooler if you both didn't use any demons at all and not just telling Nemissa to stay out of it.
It's a common trope in the to fight characters from previous games, usually they're not too bad though.
In eternia if you're playing on hardcore difficulty
(basically mania mode) the last fight in the arena has you fight arche and cless at the same time.
With only reid.
Cless is difficult by himself on normal mode, on mania he's an 11 out of 10 on the asshole scale while arche spams mid to high level spells behind him and floats in the air just to add that extra bit of annoyance and make it so most of your attacks skills can't hit her.
Star Ocean 2nd Story, playing as Rena?
Dias is bae
>kotor
>bastila is the weakest fucking jedi in the game
>she turns evil
>rejoins party
>suddenly she has twice your hp and kicks ass
feels good
>fight two different bosses in one of the main character's story line
>bullshit hard but not impossible
>other main characters can recruit them as party members instead
>they remain some of the most powerful party member, even near the end of the game when you got bullshit combos and skills
Timelord and Kylin are both top tier in Saga Frontier and I love them for that.
>Random Party member becomes boss.
>Bosses gear/moves are the same and stats are exact multiple.
>Remove all the gear of a member or take a low level member before engaging in fight and restart until they get randomly picked.
>Easy Win.
Orlandu is the most OP motherfucker that I can think of that unbalances your party. I'm sure there are recent examples of even worse cases.
Although I admit he is fun as hell.
I love using the timelord, and his magic really is good.
There was one spell that causes speed down while doing some damage, but it also had an absurdly high chance of causing petrification which is the same as instant death for use on enemies.
Even against bosses who can't be petrified, obviously, it's so satisfying to see so many stacks of speed down that it actually has to clear the SPEED DOWN text on screen so it can show another line of it.
Even happens in mega man games.
>this happens, but he continues being one of the best party members
Okage Shadow King. Three fucking times.
Thanks doc.
>okage: shadow king
nice taste
I love the game to death, but the amount of time it takes to get half of your party is bullshit.
>Piccolo joins
>He isn't shit
>Yamcha also isn't shit
That's because the boss doesn't actually convert to the side of good
He wants you to take him into your party so you won't kill him and then he fights with a fraction of his power to make it harder for you to succeed in your quest.
He tricks you into making him a member of your fighting team, your quest becomes harder than it would be with a hero in his place. If you keep him in the party tavern/hotel/shoebox for available party members currently not in use, he gets to karma Houdini because he wont have to pay for his evil deeds.
IT'S ALL A TRICK HOW CAN YOU BE SO BLIND
but what are those game were it is the opposite, I do not remember when this thread was made some time ago, but someone said that the boss is just as strong and it breaks the game if you actually recruit it
No.
i like how you can combo a saiyan's vest who doubles all your stats but confusing you with the kaioken which will give you another giant boost with an item that makes you inmune to all the ailments so you're basically a fucking murder machine
disgaea
