Crash is fucking top tier to me, I grew up with those games and today they still hold up. The first can be a bit off putting with the difficulty and a few other issues that were fixed in the next games but it's still great in my book.

Lots of people forgot how shitty Crash Bandicoot (1) is. The controls are terrible. Crash Bandicoot 2 is great though. 3 has far too many gimmick levels for my tastes but it's still a good game.

PS1 appealed to people who grew up with the NES and SNES and were now older and looked for a more mature video game experience. It was the console that grew with the audience, something that was never replicated again.

Crash 3 actually has exciting platforming, especially when going for the platinum relics for each level. That's where the nuance of the level design shines. The games you mentioned are also platformer-lite.
