Dark Souls is a JRPG

>Dark Souls is a JRPG

Dark Souls is

A japanese made game
A Role Playing Game
A JRPG

This this thick crust done wrong.

Its a wrpg you fucking faggot retard. Theres no anime bullshit anywhere to be seen in it.

>implying dark souls 2 and 3 weren't farmed out to slav developers

OP likes dark bungholes

The funny part is he ordered the thin crust.

That's what their thin crust looks like.

>role playing game made in Japan
yup it's a JRPG

>no weebtrash
>gameplay isn't turn-based garbage
>grinding doesn't really work wherein weebgames it is a requirement
>story is very cryptic
>knights and shit
well memed friend ;)

Dark Souls is an Action Role Playing Game, or ARPG, that was made in Japan.

In Call of Duty, you roleplay a soldier. That doesn't make it an RPG. There is more to a classification than the word itself. Next you'll be saying ASSFAGGOTS are RTS's and Smash is a Fighting Game.

Pizza = Dark Souls
Gordon Ramsay = casuals

What about the little tree spirits from princess mononoke in dark souls 1?

>tfw haven't played a new jrpg in a decade
What the fuck

>Blizzard tells the fans that they don't want a classic World of Warcraft experience again
that's what that pizza guy reminds me of. telling people they're wrong

>a japanese game is a western rpg
what? next you'll be telling me Shadow of the Colossus is a western game too

The last one I tried was Golden Sun Dark Dawn and it was awful. I think they're the only genre where you can't skip dialogue and story, and that's just unforgivable.

nepnep games are great

Doesn't Dark Souls just prove that using JRPG to refer to turn based RPGs is fucking stupid because Dark Souls is Japanese. Just call turn based RPGs TBRPGs or something and stop looking so stupid every time this argument comes up.

"jrpg" is defined by cliches not geography and you all damn well know it

>furries are human, too

No they're not, words have definitions for a reason.

>Games like Dark Souls pass as RPGs nowadays

Is Gran Turismo a role playing game because I play the role of a fucking racing driver?

I love this meme where turn based trash is good.

pfft kid I dont play no weebshit from japan, dark souls is a real western game for western audiences

>wrpg
>no wrpg plays like it

>All Japanese games must have anime in them

...

>nep
>good

Seriously kill yourself with your shit taste.

FACT: Westaboos refuse to admit that Dark Souls is a JRPG since they don't want to accept that the greatest game of the 7th gen was a JRPG

That's a huge pizza.

>Action Role Playing Game
Its nothing like Diablo, so it can't be an ARPG

>ni oh isn't a jrpg

>japanese = anime

Damn normalfags

Smash IS a fighting game. A party fighter, but fighting nonetheless.

Lords of the Fallen, Salt & Sanctuary and Momodora come to mind

It's made in Japan.

...

JAPAN WINS AGAIN BOYS
They should stop diddling the kids though.

stop baiting, it's poor form.

usually I look down on skipping dialog/story, but some games would be better with skipping it. Valkyrie chronicles is a good example, thankfully you can at least skip book cutscenes. That game has terrible dialog. Seriously, all I want is a ww2 SRPG, I don't want to watch an anime.

Those all came out after the first souls game.

>inb4 IT'S A BRAWLER
>inb4 IT'S ITS OWN GENRE

/neo-v/ ladies and mentlegen

But all you are given in Dark Souls is that you are the chosen one who will do something to the fire, which is standard for RPG's. There is a main quest, and you develop your own character as you go. You aren't given a character that has a pre defined role like in Forza or CoD. There are multiple endings as well and different routes to take with how you interact with different characters. You clearly haven't touched a souls game in your life, stop posting these absolutely baseless analogies.

Still wrpgs that play like it.

It is a subgenre of fighting games, not a fighting game as that term is understood. This is the same case for MOBAs and RTSs.

All I want is for it to be optional. We're at a place where games give us golden trails and checklists on screen to guide us, and I've never actually liked a video game story so I don't see why they want to force it on me.
If your game is fun, or has an interesting system, I'll play it more than once probably. I played FF7 more than once because materia setups were cool. I played Legend of Legaia twice, battle system was cool

You can't call a game a wrpg if no game played like it before it came out. That's just wrpgs trying to do their own spin on a japanese design

So what the fuck does JRPG mean these days? I know we've had this same thread thousands of times, but I ignore them. Does it just mean turn based? Is this a JRPG?

fook off with semantics, the point is that no WRPGs played like Dark Souls and thus it wasn't an WRPG

>still using JRPG and WRPG
Why? We have better genre names now.

it's Japanese
your character has stats

therefore, it is a JRPG

it means it's a japanese role playing game.

Just admit you enjoyed playing a Japanese game, OP.

I never said it wasn't an RPG. I said it wasn't a JRPG, no more than an enchilada is American food just because it was made in America. JRPGs have a distinct style and gameplay that go with them. It is misleading to say Souls games fit that classification.

Dark souls is a real time game that requires strategy to beat, so it is an RTS game

To idiots it means its a linear RPG more focused on story than gameplay

Nanyako is pure sex. I'd rather talk about that.

...

What would you call it, user?

JRPG was originally just used to clarify where the game came from.

"JRPG" now refers to the genre formerly known as "Console(-style) RPGs". Lazy journalists and posters couldn't make an acryonym out of that (since CRPG was already taken, although now that genre is referred to as WRPG incorrectly because of said lazy retards) they just started calling them JRPGs even though it's nonsensical and vague.

Many people insistent on the term who say stuff like "Dark Souls isn't a JRPG/is a WRPG" just use JRPG to mean "RPG I don't like"

Dark Souls is a role playing game made in japan that was inspired by WRPGs.

>playing jrpg and skipping the cutscenes
do you play mgs and skip the cutscenes? play animal crossing but skip the home building? pour your milk before the cereal?

>Dark Souls
>Strategy
Didn't know holding up your shield when your enemy attacks, then smacking them 3-4 times with your longsword qualified as strategy.

JRPG is a distinquished design philophy that includes an aesthetic and certain styles of gameplay. Turn-based alone does not qualify something as a JRPG, though it can be an indicator.

And that style of gameplay would be?

There's nothing wrong with being a normalfag.

>Souls is a western-styled JRPG
Hell, I'd accept that.

this desu senpai

>Japanese Role Playing Game
>Dark Souls is made by Japanese developers
>Dark Souls is an RPG
Fresh from reddit, OP?

>JRPG
>Shit from Japan that isn't mainstream and I don't like
>MGS, Souls, Castlevania, Shadow of the Colossus, Street Fighter , anything popular and anything Nintendo is American and Western because my feelings trump reason and definitions

At that point the idea of labeling by geographic location seems a bit dated. I mean, come on, its [Current Year]

>inspired by WRPGs
lol no

western rpgs are god awful

JRPG and WRPG aren't genres. Dark Souls is a Japanese ARPG with gameplay inspired by Japanese action games. It wasn't made in the west and the only western thing about it is the setting (which does not determine the game's genre and has quite a bit of eastern influence anyway).

People could say The Witcher 3 is a WRPG and Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon is a JRPG but in the end the only major differences between them from a game design perspective is that TW3 is open-world and Raidou's gameplay is focused around a pet mechanic.

Watching this show makes me realize how many times I've gone to restaurants, gotten mediocre food, and just eaten it without complaining or asking for it to be redone.

The only thing I've ever sent back was some $12 rainbow cocktail at a Chili's with flavors that were all over the place. Asked for the Patron margarita instead, which was great.

>>>Reddit

>western rpgs are god awful
shit taste detected

That's exactly what a normalfag would say

Dragon Quest was inspired by Wizardry, is it not a JRPG? It's not inspired by WRPGs at all, it has a Western aesthetic. Japan has dominated with that playstyle since the days of Onimusha and the original DMC, no WRPGs play remotely that good.

There are plenty of ARPGs that do not have a top down perspective or play anything like diablo.

There was literally nothing wrong with that pizza and Gordon was overreacting for the show.

Yeah, there's literally nothing wrong with being a normalfag.

Sup Forums doesn't like Dragon Quest, which is why it fits in the JRPG category

...

I'm fully aware of that. JRPG literally means "games I don't like" to redditbook neo Sup Forums.

How do they make pizzas where you live

why everyone on Sup Forums so stupid
I don't mean haha you guys are silly I mean genuinely mentally underdeveloped
is it the underage population of the board making dumb posts
is it because vidya is just generally a hobby for the uneducated

I like how that ballsy-ass cook laid down the heat when the pizza came back and said exactly that.

...

The closest thing to the Souls series (prior to the series taking off in popularity) are the Metroidvania which are definitely Japanese RPGs.

It doesn't matter what people call it. Because in reality, it's trash

In terms of gameplay it was most similar to King's Field and Monster Hunter

someone shop the pizza onto this

How does it not?

GOLEM GET YE GONE

>JRPG just means an RPG from Japan!

It's not incorrect to say this, but that just makes the label meaningless.
And people instinctively use JRPG only for a specific type of RPG which Dark Souls is not

Well Dark Souls is an ARPG either way.

JRPG is a genre, not a factual label of what country the game was made

JRPG and WRPG are terms coined by what is historically typical of RPGs from those regions.

It's possible for western devs to make a JRPG, and it's possible for jap devs to make a WRPG

>RTS
>Strategy
Didn't know mindlessly clicking 300 times a minute qualified as strategy

I was convinced the Souls games were bettered classified as Action RPGs, not JRPGs. Do Souls game share any traits with other JRPGs besides the country of origin?

Then just call them what they are: a turn based RPG, or an action based RPG.

Stop with this regional BS since it only confuses people.
