Discuss oldschool style RPGs ranging from Wizardry to Gothic.
RPG Thread
Gothic is dogshit
Hmm, not quite a Gothic thread, but oh well. This will do.
A few days ago I promised user a subtitled version of this video:
youtube.com
It's done.
www3.zippyshare.com
How easy is it to get german dialogue in Gothic 2?
Thanks man
Does anyone like Neverwinter Nights 2?
The first Rpg I ever played was kotor 1. it quickly became my favorite genre.
The OC for both NWN games suck but all the modules more than make up for the games' flaws.
Pretty easy, but you need both the English and the German version. All you have to do is copy over the subtitle files.
somebody needs to port this shit to android
DO THEY HAVE WINE FOR ANDROID????????????????????
>playing anything but dungeon crawlers on your phone
It's basically a simplified version of Neverwinter Nights 1. You should check those out and play A Dance with Rogues
>not buying a moga pocket gamepad for 10$ on ebay
>not rooting your phone and configuring the universal driver
>not installing tincore which changes the mappings to all games and allows you to play anything with a gamepad
It's ok user, I'm sure some day someone will remake it with "modern" gameplay and you'll be able to enjoy it.
How do we make RPGs great again?
play the old shit, make your own, don't whore out on graphics, accept "losing" as a valid end game condition, respect the player's intelligence, get writers that aren't coders, support developers that do the above
I have played abit of neverwinter nights 1 with friends but the main module. What's so special about a dance with rogues?
I can't wait for Divinity original sin 2
Baldurs gate 2 is best rpg
Pillars of eternity was a great game
I hope tyrant and tides of numenara don't suck
Is wasteland 2 worth getting on sale?
Discuss.
i only ever liked nwn for the persistent servers so i never really got into nwn2 since the mp community was always dead. i've been wanting to try it out since it seems like there's quite a few active nwn2 servers now. i played through the campaign recently and the game really has aged like shit though. it's really bad to play and still buggy
You go in expecting a mediocre smut module and you get a top tier stealth module in an open, oppressive city with some sex on the side instead.
suck dick suck dick suck dick
and divinity 2 might be cool on mobile
its not really a pc game
no post-2001 turn based shit should ever be on pc
same
good but not my favorite
didn't grab me
same
haven't played it
>no post-2001 turn based shit should ever be on pc
this is the truth
turn based games suck ass. i NEVER liked them
Wow I think your opinions are hot shit
Rpgs are way too easy to push politcal agenda with so must stories become very dry cut and lazy. I'd say This user is right. We should all make an effort to save our sacred genre which has been saturated and desecrated by heretics! MAKE RPGS GREAT AGAIN!
I like Might & Magic X. But i don't like uPlay to it.
>no post-2001 turn based shit should ever be on pc
kys yourself
Still waiting for a tactics game as good as Silent Storm and Jagged Alliance 2
>I can't wait for Divinity original sin 2
Wish I could say the same, but holy shit, fuck co-op with a rake.
>Baldurs gate 2 is best rpg
BG1 had Durlag's Tower, so BG1 wins by default. I wouldn't call either of them the best anyway.
>Pillars of eternity was a great game
It's ok.
>I hope tyrant and tides of numenara don't suck
Well, there's not much else we can do at this point.
>Is wasteland 2 worth getting on sale?
Sure why not, if it's a deep discount.
Something about a woman.
>We should all make an effort to save our sacred genre
I do this by not trying to make an RPG.
Fuck Greg so much holy shit
>Condescending fuck
>Too strong to try killing early even with f5/f9
>Shitty quest
>"Oh, I am accompanying you on a quest? Wait here while I murder all the wildlife in the area and deny you 1000 worth of xp"
>Rushes in to help you with Dexter but bugs out and keeps spinning in circles, while all the bandits he pulled rape my shit
Also, critical hits were a fucking mistake
I bought wasteland 2 directors cut and I enjoyed it. The gameplay is like a watered down xcom but it's not bad at all I really like the story and Rpg aspect where there are skill checks to do stuff and also I liked the ammo system.
Why the hate for co-op?
>holy shit, fuck co-op with a rake
It's not just co-op, it's streamer bait co-op.
I wish Legend of Grimrock was this colorful.
No idea why they made it into a monochrome snorefest.
He has no friends to play with.
>there are skill checks to do stuff
It's sad that this needs to be pointed out when talking about RPGs. It should be the minimum standard
Colours aren't atmospheric.
nothing is more atmospheric than a blue sky at noon and a red sunset. That's fucking colors
World of Xeen is special
It can be played single player right? I don't get why people get so angry over stupid petty shit.
But user that would include actual effort to implement and how will the companies deal with all the angry players who can't do something becuase they can't into skill allocation.
>how will the companies deal with all the angry players who can't do something becuase they can't into skill allocation.
>accept "losing" as a valid end game condition, respect the player's intelligence
You have to have conversations between yourself which is a bit strange though. Divinity OS 2 just has you making one character though.
Because it's a long RPG, and not the kind you just pick up, play for a few hours, and pick up again days or weeks later. It's not good material for co-op play, especially not 4 player co-op.
It's great if you have a decent co-op partner.
Then just don't play co-op, and let other people decide what friends they want to play with and how. Theres literally no reason for anyone to be butthurt.
Maybe if both of you are swimming in free time and happen to share the same time zone.
Is there anything like FFT on PC but without the fantasy shit in it? Can emulate stuff too, so please advise.
You just need to be able to arrange sessions with eachother. If you have enough free time to post on Sup Forums you have enough time to play games.
How's this one?
store.steampowered.com
That's an option, but the game was designed around the co-op experience because Swen has a fucking hard on for it. It's not like Baldur's Gate that can be played as co-op but wasn't really designed for it. As a single-player game D:OS can't hold a candle to Larian's previous games.
More excited for their next game called Copper Dreams.
>The game is bad because you don't have a friend to regularly play co-op with, even though you lose absolutely nothing playing by yourself
Makes no sense
>can't hold a candle
That's your opinion, I loved it and the combat system was awesome.
>You just need to be able to arrange sessions with eachother.
And this is exactly the problem. It's not that I don't have free time, or they don't have free time, it's that there is very little overlap. And when you know you only have an hour to play together it quickly ends in
>ehh, let's just play tomorrow instead
I find turn based combat with movement to be really tedious. I like the old menu driven stuff where you just pick stuff from a menu.
>the game is bad
Have I said that anywhere? I simply expressed strong dislike for the co-op-first approach.
I prefer how M&M3-8 handles it over lots of menu navigation. Those games are less about combat and more about exploration though.
>dungeon crawler
>sky and sunset
...
What are your thoughts on the original Risen?
I found that the game is great in the first chapter but quickly loses it appeal once the lizardmen start popping up and you have to enter that bugged out Volcano keep.
Never played Might and Magic?
anyone got thoughts on betrayal at krondor?
started playing it again, just went to chapter 2 after adventuring a lot in chapter 1. i'm really enjoying myself
You think there's only atmosphere in the sky? That's not how it works, user.
was extremely fun back in 1994. I can't even imagine trying to play it now.
Should I play Hong Kong if I liked Dragonfall but thought the original Returns was a waste of time
can I skip NWN2 and go straight to MotB
Which to play first out of Wasteland 2, Age of Decadence and UnderRail
Yes you can skip the OC.
just how dense are you fuckers? I'm used to a lot of shit, bit you're retarded even by Sup Forums standard
There a shit ton of dungeon crawlers that feature outsides at some point, they are still called dungeon crawlers for a reason.
I know DX1 isn't an RPG, but are there any other RPGs that are exactly like it but fantasy?
This guy gets it
>DX1 isn't an RPG
it sure is, maybe more so than some games that claim to be
>exactly like it but fantasy?
Ultima Underworld.
>In his 1994 proposal, [Warren Spector] described the concept [of what would become Deus Ex] as "Underworld-style first-person action" in a real world setting with "big-budget, nonstop action"
I really liked the OC campaigns for both NWNs, are the modules that much better? What are the best ones? I'll rifle through my garage and find my old NWN cds for this shit.
But it is a RPG.
RPGs "like it but fantasy" would just be semi-linear action RPGs like The Witcher 2 and Divine Divinity 2
They usually focus on delving through dungeons. Then again under that criteria Skyrim is a dungeon crawler.
ADWR, Cave of Songs, and maybe Aielund Saga for NWN1. There's tons of goldbox remakes for NWN2. Multiplayer is still alive for both games too.
Yea or Nay? I'm thinking about giving it a try.
is it just me or does that look like will wheaton and felicia day?
I was playing Fallout not too long ago. I got a decent amount of hours in it but I never did beat it. Just kind of lost direction after doing some Caravan quests.
Now playing Shin Megami Tensei on the SNES. I'm not the biggest fan of first person dungeon crawlers but this game is good. It isn't easy but I've yet to hit a brick wall.
is nethergate resurrection worth a buy?
they are. It's from the web show The Guild
Battle Brothers? Expeditions: Conquistador? There's tons of them on PC but I don't know the genre well.
Please name more.
Do you want tactics games with guns?
On my to-do list of RPGs to play. Unfortunately the list gets bigger and bigger every day.
the trick is playing them. It makes them disappear from the list
But then a series like Geneforge and Avernum pop up on my list where I have more than 6 games for each to play.
you play them one after another, they disappear one after another
Stop adding everything you find on it and just list them as loss.
never
You have to play them at the right time. I had the BGs on my list for 4 years before I played them, some user convinced me to play the Gothic series almost 5 years ago and I only just got around playing them. Meanwhile Deus Ex was an impulse buy in a GOG Insomnia thread, Underrail in some general RPG thread, and I played both right away.
You don't just play for the sake of playing. There is a right time for every game if you want to get the most out of them.
This. I always take a break from a game if I feel like I'm just trying to rush through it. Usually I come back to it and enjoy it. The downside is it takes me months to beat one RPG.
how is that in conflict with anything I said?
why not?
it's just as fun as back in the day, i don't remember when exactly i played it the first time but between 94 and 97. good times user, good times. you really should play it again.
which games are on your list?
i only have wizardry 8,vtmb (currently playing it) and a few avernums
You don't work your way through your backlog, it's only there to give you options (that is, if you already bought the games on your log).
where did I require order?
Wizardry 6-8
Underrail
Age of Decadence
BaK
Might and Magic 7 and 8
Avernum series
Geneforge series
Grimrock 2
Shadowrun Dragonfall
Shadowrun Hong Kong
King of Dragon Pass
Anachronox
Neverwinter Nights 2
Temple of Elemental Evil
System Shock 2
Arcanum
I am currently getting my anus ruptured by Wizardry 1 (ps1 remake). Even with the added benefit of an automap, playthrough looks like:
>random encounter
>status effect incapacitates upwards of 1/2 my party
or
>random encounter
>Level 1 ninjas lol
>half the party is decapitated
>go to temple to revive them
>Priest: lol sorry we fucked up the resurrection spell your guy is dead forever thanks for the donation
or
>oh boy I can upgrade my character class? neat!
>upgrade lvl20 char
>back down to level 1, loses most stats
this game is ridiculously cruel on players.
I'm not talking about order either. Only that you shouldn't treat this as a task or something you have to get through. Only play when you feel like playing.
