Let's just get this out of the way

The only game I ever finished was Super. Shud I do Prime or one of the GBA games next?

I like Samus because she was my favorite in Melee.

Prime next for sure.

Its best appreciated as a followup to Super, even though its earlier chronologically

There is no future

I'm just glad it went out on the high note of Zero Mission

I'm calling it, there's going to be an NX Metroid game.

An arena-based multiplayer only game made by Retro studios.

This is what the series needs:

>no story, ever. If you want story, go read a book. Stop tainting Metroid. The most you'll get is something in the instruction manual.
>no multiplayer. No amiibos. No DLC. The game will play exactly like the first Super Metroid, or Metroid Prime. There will be no multiplayer elements.
>gameplay will be given top priority. That means whether it runs at 30 FPS or 60 FPS, it should remain stable and never drop
>there should be a good amount of challenge, and plenty of difficulty modes.
>if they're gonna rehash old powerups, we need a good reason for it. No authorization BS. Have something legitimate happen that excuses it. Also, mix up some new items into the fray.
>design worlds so that you can easily make shortcuts through them if you ever need to backtrack. Think Super Metroid, in particular areas like Maridia where you can shortcut down to Brinstar once you're done there. In other words it would help to have the levels interconnect in several places
>no voice acting
>no cutscenes
>no handholding
>no tutorials
>any gimmicks should be optional. If I want to play it with a pro controller, I should be allowed. If you want gamepad functionality, that;s fine. It could be a possible good inventory screen, but don't make it mandatory

I think Nintendo may be onto something with Federation Force, having had the chance to play it most of today. Plays nice, which isn't a surprise in this day and age, and it hits the replayability in all the right ways. Varied enough to keep levels interesting and worth replaying, while also being short enough to be fun and enjoyable.

They could really rework it into a multiplayer Metroid experience with Feds going out to fight pirates and do various tasks like the game already has, but uncover and upgrade with Chozo tech. If Nintendo handles it right, they could turn this into their own version of Phantasy Star Online / MH style game of quests and player advancement with RNG (which the game does already, due to mods and possibly retarded squads)

As far as a Metroid title, it seems to be really lackluster to me at this point, but I'm not too far in. A few name drops of Samus and her model, as well as the blasphemy of the decoy shot doesn't really connect me to the Metroid universe. Oversized Pirates with enviroments that don't really seem like they should exist, and every enemy being proportionate to the mechs is also bleh.

The fact that there are some issues with the online is no surprise, but given how they hyped up Blast Ball, they really dropped the ball by not having options to kick and replace AFK players. Tried to play a few matches and afk players wouldn't pick teams, making the matches unable to begin. Also next to impossible to play with friends, from what I heard, but I have none, so I cannot verify this.

Give Prime 1 a try, since it is the closest to Super in terms of atmosphere and inspiration. It may click with you, or it may not.

Fusion would be the next game to recommend, since it continues from Super, but Zero Mission is a really great game in its own rights. It just remakes a lot of areas that were in Super, since Super was an enhanced remake of Metroid 1 on NES, which Zero Mission is a remake of as well.

Metroid will be fine, and we'll probably see both another traditional Metroid and Retro Studios game down the road at some point.

The question is just when. Retro Studios is pretty slow on game releases this gen, taking forever on Tropical Freeze for a bunch of reasons and having their next project held off until the NX, so who knows when they'll finally get back around to Metroid once their current thing is finished? Meanwhile Sakamoto seems content with Wario, Rhythm Heaven and Tomodachi. We honestly might not see the next core Metroid game until 6 or 7 years from now depending on the direction Nintendo takes.

But the idea that Federation Force will be the last game in the series, and it being killed off like F-Zero or Advance Wars, comes off as ridiculous to me. Even though Metroids never been a heavy hitter in Japan and taken frequent breaks in its release schedule Nintendo has always treated it as one of their core IPs, and they speak of its future in a much more positive light when you look at interviews. It's also got a bigger history with the company than those C-list franchises.

There's enough indie Metroidvanias out there to tide people over until Nintendo finally gets off their ass to release a new one. We've just had Axiom Verge, Environmental Station Alpha and AM2R all pretty recently, with La Mulana 2, Bloodstained and ESA2 still on the way.

Authorization is like the only time in the series you losing your powerups made sense.

I wouldn't mind a soft reboot of sorts. By that I mean a side-scrolling game that essentially ignores all the previous entries and boils the gameplay down to its essentials. Something completely unburdened by association with prior lore and entries and just offers a quintessential "lost in a maze" game.

Controversy time: do you even think that Samus is necessary for a Metroid game? Let me also say that I love Sammy, but still.

>boils the gameplay down to its essentials
>Nintendo
do you want a watered down version of Zero Mission?

How would you guys feel about a Metroid book?

I just fired up fusion after beating super metroid and it's night and day honestly
even in 2002 nintendo had no fucking idea what they were doing, with all the blatant hand holding, exploration blocking shit, and dialogue

Axiom Verge proved that you can make a good Metroid game without Samus, or any of the established IPs and trademarks. Flawed as it was, it was still better than Multiplayer garbage.

>do you even think that Samus is necessary for a Metroid game?
Why bother replacing her?

She has a great design, is pretty popular, has an established history and it's super easy to justify random new item powerups thanks to her power suit. It's way easier to just dump her on a planet, tell her she needs to do x to save the galaxy and start up the game than it would be to design and establish a completely new protagonist and set status quo.

One game that focused too much on a poor characterization of her doesn't mean she's better off replaced. It just means Nintendo should stick to keeping her muted and non-intrusive, since it worked well for the other dozen in the series.

Still one of the best parts of Super Metroid. Seeing people whose first console was the 360 encountering this was brilliant, there was a whole thread about it today.

Metroid is dead.

Fusion is more of a run n gun than an exploration game. It's why it's built around going into sectors and fighting bosses instead of making your way around a maze, having an AI give out orders to you makes getting to the meat of the gameplay faster.

It does that really too, its bosses put Super Metroids and Zero Missions to shame. Zero Mission and Prime were the games released for people who wanted a Metroid game more in line with Super, and those games are really fucking good.

Yeah but the one time they chose to address it, they did it in the most retarded way imaginable.

Metroid 5

Samus is essential to Metroid due to her unique gameplay mechanics, as well as the fact that she's Nintendo's most nimble and agile character. Sequence breaking is fun in the series due to all the different options that exist to the players to utilize, and enhance the games for that fact.

We also have the issue of 2D or 3D Metroid for this question. 2D is Samus or bust, but 3D can be explored in that way. Federation Force is just 1-4 generic grunts that play like a base level Samus, where missles and Charge are the goto weaponry, while Hunters existed and shown that it can be so much more.

Take the concept of FF, but with random bounty hunters, and keep the score system in place, but have it be like a bounty payout instead of generic score. Either give players unique characters with their own mechanics, or keep the mod system in place to allow the players the chance to build their character how it suits them with abilities and the like. Justifies objectives, score, as well as allows the player to invest in the game.

People loved Hunters, which means it stands to reason that if they offered the chance to play the campaign as someone else, it would be just as good, as characters were similar, with several having morph ball modes of their own

Samus and Joey covered my itch better than it had the right to, but I don't expect most writers to handle such a task. Nintendo would probably keep a tight leash on such a project if it was official and in the west, and Japan loves to deviate and do things differently to have each medium unique.

It's great, but damn did it piss me off the first time I played it.
>Just got x-ray specs
>Go around the entire map x-raying everything
>Nothing shows up in this tube, so I leave
>No idea where to go
>Put game down for a week

Gaming Brit pls go

how to fix metroid:

give it to hal, make 2d metroid like kirby

You could've always entered Maridia through the wrecked ship.

I just recently got a new card, so I pumped this shit to 1080p

It's the GC version with UI hack. Can't get a new wiimote until one more month, so gotta use the GC version

I didn't remember it being this fun

ALRIGHT FAGGOTS GIVE ME WAYS TO SEQUENCE BREAK IN SUPER ANFD ZERO MISSION

In ZM I already beat ridley first in hard mode, working on getting the speed booster next and then the screw attack. The only "early" power bomb I can see myself getting is the one at the landing site, but the only conceivable way to do that I see is through mother brain anyway which starts the zero suit sequence and earns me little to nothing anyway

And while we're at it...

Fuck man, I really wish I could play Metroid Prime with a VR headset.

>I can't handle dissenting opinions

That's nice, dear.

I like Kirby but the Kirby series is the opposite end of the spectrum as Metroid in terms of tone and style. I can't see Hal pulling one off.

And Amazing Mirror outright had the worst map design I've seen in any Metroidvania so I don't trust them with making one.

It's bleak, alarmingly

Wrong, most of the metroid threads post ff are just anti-contrarians saying "WOW FUCKING NO FUN LOSERS ON Sup Forums WOW WOW IT'S ACTUALLY A GOOD GAME FUCK OFF YOU STUPID CONTRARIAN YOU JUST HATE IT BECAUSE IT'S POPULAR"

>look at all these mindless shills shilling their beloved Other M
>post 2015
>trolls like Cody "Pretendo" Coyote emerge from the shadows
>if you're not called a sonygger, you're now called a "pretendo" for disliking Other M

Guess who was right in the end?

Actually, the Wrecked Ship side of Marida doesn't let you get to the section proper. It contains no items, and only serves one purpose: to show you a smashed tube.

The tube HAS to be broken to get into Maridia proper.

shit never mind that. the power bomb is secured by power bomb blocks

Is Super Zero Mission any good? The landing site's AESTHETICS really turned me off

I have a 3DS and 12 bucks on the eshop card

Should I get metroid 1 or 2?

I read that it has a really bullshit shinespark section as part of the main gameplay, which could be a deal breaker for some people.

Other than that, the only other hack I've heard universally praised is Hyper, if people completely ignore the intro story that went full on grim derp. I found it to be very refreshing and worth a play.

Nintendo can no longer do this series justice.

Metroid Prime 1 and 2 were the only games since Super that captured the tone and spirit of Super did and it doesn't look like Nintendo is even going to attempt to emulate what made Super and Prime so great.

>the thing about height and musculature

That stuff is explicitly detailed. It was canon since Super Metroid. People have a right to be upset that shes turning more and more into fap material.

This hasn't updated for post-FF yet you dumb mongoloid

ESA actually feels even more like Metroid than Axiom Verge, despite the attacks being more like melee attacks.

>no items
>what is plasma beam

>tfw having fun with AM2R

>metroid franchise
>future

what's this fully called? ESA?

>Are you on 11.0?
If yes, keep going
If no, drop everything you're doing and follow the pailect guide. Play every 2D metroid plus hacks

>Do you have an N3DS?
If yes, keep going
If no, get browserhax then menuhax, install NES and GBC emulators, play metroid 1 for free and a colored hack of metroid 2 flawlessly

>I have an N3DS on 11.0, what do?
Look up browserhax, then install menuhax through it
Get emulators
Play any 2D game and then some hacks, but with a handful of flaws
Save money on metroid 1 and 2 by emulating them flawlessly

>I don't wanna pirate / do it
get metroid 1

Speaking of rom hacks, here's 70 of them:

Environmental Station Alpha

...

that map looks amazing but those screenshots my god they make my eyes bleed

If you can get past the basic art style, you'll be well-rewarded. ESA is overall a better game than Axiom Verge.

When have I ever criticized people for disliking Other M? I'm not fond of it either.

I do, however, have issues with people exaggerating it's problems to ludicrous degrees. Simply put, this is far from 'the franchise killer!' that people like to pretend it is. Feds getting made proves that Nintendo is very committed to making interesting new entries in the franchise, and those of us who actually like playing Nintendo instead of just whining about the company online are very grateful for that.

Feds was a great way to celebrate the anniversary, and I'm showing my colors by having my Miitomo Mii proudly wear the birthday outfit Nintendo released for Samus.

Did someone say..... tubes?

WHY do people call Axiom Verge a metroid without samus? The mark of a metroid game (at least since super, which ended up resulting in a remake of the originals) is the sheer freedom to fuck off into the unknown if you're good at handling the game's mechanics

Axiom Verge is a metroidVANIA, forcing you to walk the progress curve the way the devs said you had to

Someone please tell me I get some funky ass gun or equipment to sequence break this game apart later

What are some good SM romhacks that work on original hardware?

Fusion was my favorite metroid

it was my first and fav as well.

how many of you linked your copy of fusion to your copy of prime for the fusion suits in 3d?

i did

TUUUUUUUUUBES

locked out until after you obtain Space Jump after beating Draygon.

>eds getting made proves that Nintendo is very committed to making interesting new entries in the franchise

Welp, thanks for reminding me why it's never a good idea to go into Metroid threads

I never had a problem with the tube. It just clicked in my head right away after seeing the broken one that I needed to blow it up some how.

However, after I got the X-Ray scope, I became way too reliant on it, and I got stuck in Lower Norfair after defeating Ridley because I used the X-Ray to try to find the way out. The hidden passage here doesn't show up on it because the room is lit by bugs. I guess one day I finally moved into it by mistake and discovered it.

Since Metroid II*

It's easier just to powerbomb every room

That is much faster, but it doesn't reveal super missile or speed booster blocks.

what future

hopefully we get an actual mercenary bounty hunter story this time

>Metroid Fusion 2 with no Adam references, no stupid talking computer, and no Samus elevator dialogue will ever happen.

just fuck my shit up

>When have I ever criticized people for disliking Other M?
You say it right in your post.

>Other M has no problems! its just everyone exxaggerating!

Now you lie to my face, and I take offense to that.

>>no story, ever. If you want story, go read a book. Stop tainting Metroid. The most you'll get is something in the instruction manual.
Fuck off, the simple stories told through gameplay in Metroid II and Super Metroid were great

It's going to fall into the same trap as Darkstalkers and only live on as a fapservice crossover slot.

>Fuck off, the simple stories told through gameplay in Metroid II and Super Metroid were great
user, don't get me wrong. I love that kind of storytelling because it's sublte and doesn't get in the way of the gameplay. I guess I should've reworded what I said by saying "no cutscenes, ever.".

After a title like Metroid: Other M, surely you can understand why I don't want Metroid touching the video game crutch known as cinematics.

They've set up some opportunities.

Post-Fusion
>Federation officially distances themselves from Samus
>public statement was a sham and they plan to silence her
>uses scans from her use of Data Rooms to deactivate many of her powers
>escapes through the help of a sympathizer
>uses logs to find a distant planet with Chozo Ruins to hide and restore her lost gear in a way that can't be removed
>tracked by bounty hunters on the way there
>their attacks disable her ship and leave her stranded on the planet
>the sympathizer helps through sending information on the Hunters and salvaging Federation parts to bring Adam back online

Post-Prime
>Samus is sent to investigate a recent mass disappearance of Federation ships
>discovers ships belonging to Space Pirates
>while searching for intel on one such ship she's attacked by a swarm of Infant Metroids
>she's able to blow them off but is shot from behind
>wakes up to being scanned and having her weapons turned off
>quickly makes her escape and spots a ship similar to the Delano 7 flying away
>chases it to a planet with a large Space Pirate base on it
>does the typical search and destroy routine
>other stages of Metroid life are also inside the facility
>the game's upgrades are Space Pirate based
>eventually revealed that Sylux is behind the resurgence of Space Pirates after the events of Corruption
>plan was to use the Metroid at the end of Federation Force to breed his own biological weapon from the GF's hubris
>game ends with the Federation deciding that rogue Metroids are too dangerous and must be eliminated

the way fusion ended was honestly really fucking cool and I would love a direct sequel

...

oh yeah I mean I have zero hope for any quality entries in the metroid franchise going forward but I'm just sayin

I don't think cutscenes should be outright condemned. Prime did them right.

THIS IS ACFAG

DO NOT FEED HIM (YOU)S

In all fairness, your average Prime cutscene was 10 seconds, maybe 20 if it's a boss introduction. Those were tolerable because of how easy they were to skip, and how little impact they had on the gameplay. If you were speedrunning, or accidentally skipped a scene, you weren't penalized because Prime had better, more subtle ways to deliver the plot and important details to you, aka the scan logs. I still maintain that the scanning system was one of the (pardon the pun) prime examples of how you should deliver a story in a game.

A bad game like TLOU or Uncharted will spend hours of cutscenes relaying useless information, occasionally sprinkling something you might need to know later, so you're just skipping scenes hoping that they don't throw some obscure stupid puzzle at you. And I bet that's what Sakamoto drew inspiration from in the later years of Other M development. Since he couldn't have his Metroid movie be made, he'd make the game as movie-like as possible, and it certainly shows.

That's not ACfag. He's not going around saying that everyone else loves Other M.

Fund it.

Nintendo and Metroid are a poor fit. It's really a series that would be better on PC, Xbox or Sony.

Nintendo clearly has zero idea what to do with the series. Creating "Zero Suit Samus" was their attempt to add sexuality to the series. A series that really doesn't need it. Other M was their attempt to "update" it to what they think is a modern game. Which is a cutscene heavy storyline about a weak woman.

No one wants that. Samus shouldn't say more than 2 sentences in the whole game. The series should be about exploring some big alien world, finding upgrades. It should be kinda scary. Prime series was a much better update to than what Sakamoto made. I can't understand how the director of Super Metroid can also direct Other M.

The path forward is obvious. But the WiiU sold poorly, and most people who buy Nintendo consoles are the least likely to like Metroid. As such Federation Force almost kinda makes sense.

Metroid will not be free from Ninty's shackles until the NX fails and they make theri games multi-platform.

Zeta metroids always gave me more trouble than Omegas in 2, and the same was true for AMR2.

You know that'll never happen. Nintendo will just sue anyone who dares to use ther property.

I'd rather just continue onward and make good spiritual successors. Sure, we'll often end up with Mighty Number 9-tier games, but we'll also occasionally get games as good as AM2R, ESA, Axiom Verge, etc.

I can just here his British come through.

If Nintendo goes mult-plat, then making a game aimed at adults/teens makes more sense. Which fits more the tone of Metroid. A modern Metroid Prime style title would have huge appeal. Right now a "real" Metroid game doesn't make any damn sense for them since they cling to their shitty consoles. N64 should have been a wakeup call, instead they kept trudging along.

game scales surprisingly well with widescreen fix

I shit on other m and prime halo clones. Just because my opinion makes you butthurt doesn't mean im this "AC Fag"

>zero suit killed Metroid
it was a big fucking mistake
>starts debating Samus correct height
factually she's 6'3 in canon

I've never even seen anyone saying Tube Comics were never funny.

Someone will probably say it now, but still.

She is an amazon with bird DNA.

The best comics are the ones pointing out hilarious factual plotholes in the games.

>why does the room fill with lava
>geez, ow it burns

>no ing will penetrate this light powered door
>flashlight
>curse you ing

>that comic where the space pirate jumps onto Samuss ship and is like "I'm a hero!" splat

Whoever thought tubes were the height of the comedy has vapor for brains.

The tubes are factual as well. They're mostly worthless for the pirates and only benefit samus.

Space Pirates are way too crafty

yes

...
