what if players could choose the direction they place blocks? You can place them below, left, right, and up. You choose which way to place them with the arrow keys. of course it defaults to below when no key is pressed.

in response to emergent gameplay, yes, this pretty much is

the mechanics are barebones and there's no particular goal. the dev hasn't given players any reason to build or fight; but they were given the means to do so, and so they do

the map isn't segregated in any way, yet people congregate around certain parts of the map depending on what they want, without any direction to do so

since if you don't climb, you'll inevitably wind up at the bottom due to gravity/terrain damage, people who don't really care where they wind up or who they're playing will end up at the bottom. typically they just try to kill eachother, although some players just want the space to practice juggling. "southerners" seen as more barbaric because of this

meanwhile "northerners" go out of their way to climb to find like-minded and non-violent individuals and are most interested in and satisfied with simply grouping up at the top. social animals who enjoy company without the need for competition.

and then you have the players who just want to build, and spread out to either side away from the spawn/top/bottom where there aren't as many players in order to avoid damage to their structure, simply wanting to build comfy homes, usually with room for a friend or two.they could be furthered divided into those who simply build for the sake of creating something and move on, and those who build for the sake of making their own home and sharing it with others

it's stupid as fuck but i can't help but feel like it's amazing at the same time. the game definitely needs to continue having versatile mechanics that allow people to play how they want, without pushing them in a specific direction, but what kind of mechanics could be added and keep that theme, i'm not sure

a stronger block type seems like a good start
