Has there ever been a solid video game trilogy with a good ending that ended and the developers left it alone and didn't try to milk the franchise needlessly? It can't have any prequels and it can't have any announcements that a 4th installment is coming out. For instance my first thought was God of War but then they came out with Ascension and there's a 4th one coming out that they announced at E3. Same with Gears of War. Mass Effect has a 4th one coming out soon too.
The only ones I can think of that are just a trilogy and nothing else are the Killzone games or the Resistance games but I've never played them. I guess the Dead Space games are the best one since it's unlikely that a 4th installment with come out and they were all solid games sans the ending of the 3rd one.

Max Payne

They made more than just the trilogy. You guys are missing the point of this thread.

warcraft :^)

This, unless they let Remedy make their own Max Payne 3

Best answer so far. The ending to 3 was left open though so it's possible that another one is on the way but until then Max Payne is the winner.

DS3 sucked fucking ass though
James Long
Not meeting the bar that DS2 set doesn't mean it sucks ass. It was a solid game with a great crafting system.
Thomas Walker
There are three installments of FFXIII, thus it qualifies as a trilogy.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Prince of Persia: Warrior Within Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
The story is tied up very nicely at the end of the third game. It's unfortunate that the second game almost ruins everything by trying so hard to be edgy for no reason, destroying the character's personality to appeal to an audience that would never play the first game. At least the gameplay was improved in the second installment, I guess.
I've heard that Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is supposed to be part of the same trilogy, but it really has nothing to do with the games above.

The crafting system raped core gameplay and defeated the whole purpose of jury-rigging tools as weapons
Not to mention the story was shit, can't even remember a single fucking thing story wise about that game as where DS1 and 2 are both memorable

>first two games on one platform >third game exclusive to another platform

3 was indeed worse in story and presentation. But the combat was fun, the coop was fun and making curahzy weapons was lots of fun. The makeshifts weapons made from tools thing from the other ones aren't what they were going for in 3. It was the first time they were kinda prepared and knowing that they were going to face. It's for better or worse, not about a regular engineer trying to survive space zombies. Isaac became a action hero

Mother is the only one.

Bioshock is one. Idk if hd rereleases count.

Infinite was fucking heinous dog shit
Ayden Thomas
>Infinite wasn't even part of the fucking main story of 1 or 2 thus it isn't a trilogy >Bioshock 1 and 2 were actually good.
Dominic Anderson
The Witcher trilogy.
Xavier Robinson
>three games >three bioshock games >the only three bioshock games >all related?
Holy shit its a trilogy!

Although I agree that the edginess of the second game came out of nowhere, but now that it's a completed trilogy, I actually kind of like it. In the context of the story, the part where the Prince is being constantly hunted by a fucking inter-dimensional invincible demon turning him into an edgelord kinda makes sense, and then when he has the internal struggle with the Dark Prince in 3, and especially the part where Farah goes to save the citizens of his city and he disagrees at first, makes the struggle a lot more natural, like the Prince is struggling to return to being a non-edgelord and the Dark Prince just wants him to stay in Warrior Within mode.
Carson Thomas
not a trilogy.

Super Mario Bros Metroid Prime Mother
Bentley Martin
>Super Mario Bros Every spin off ever >Metroid Prime Federation Force, Hunters and Pinball are still spin-offs.
Mother is the only franchise to just fucking stop.
Jonathan Hernandez
This is the only one I can think of, and the only reason they didn't go farther is because their team fell apart and it never went beyond niche interest.
