Self bump because this board is terrible at sorting

I switched to Game maker since I wanted to make a 2-d pixel-shit game

Because I can't make assets, for every idea I ever got...

Eh, I'll just use C++ and some libraries.
What could go wrong?

I'm trying to learn GameMaker instead, because it's better suited towards a 2D RPG.

Over inspiration was my killer too. Then I went through a "buy everything from the asset store, make a rough draft then replace everything as I go along" ended up way over my head and a lot of wasted money. I figured it'd be easier to do if I had a physical culmination of the game to chip away at rather than start blank. Wrong.

Way too large of scope. I'd return to it if I had a budget to hire a team.

Same here. Hyper Light Drifter kinda fucked me cause I was gonna make a Zelda clone type game that would have the atmosphere of all the things I like split into different regions.

Because I moved to UE4

I'm doing a 2D Zelda clone too in GameMaker, but I'm gearing more towards a short arcade-like experience focused on multiplayer than atmosphere or immersion.

I would play your game if it was comfy as fuck, user. What artstyle do you have in mind?

That's like a sandbox to me. Yeah it's a real game engine but 99% of the users are using plug and play pre made code and assets, basically playing Garrys mod, acting like they're making games. Are you one of these? I bet you are silly goose.

You basically just described Unity.

Musicfag here.

How much bricks would you shit if every boss in the game used a single theme, and then when you enter the final boss battle, the same theme plays but with the dial turned up to eleven?

Here's what I'm talking about.

Boss theme: soundcloud.com/iwilldevouryourkittens/the-interlopersc-boss-theme
Final boss theme (phase 1): soundcloud.com/iwilldevouryourkittens/the-interlopers-reprise

Is this cool, or just stupid?

I wish I had any art left. It looked like shit when I was making it, but when I quit I realized it was pretty decent. Style is a bit like this, less bubbly and more heavy shadows where applicable. Resolution is pretty on point with what I had, mine was just more dark themed without seeming like a corny vampire game. Picture Infamous in pixel with fantasy

Cool if you mix it with a Falcom-esque rendition of the main theme

Not as much as UE. Unity has all the plug and play stuff too, but UE offers complete instant gratification and these users take it for granted, as if the tiny details that they aren't paying attention to are inherently present. Unity doesn't do that. It still takes hours and hours just to get pre made prefabs to work properly and it still looks like shit.

And why exactly did you quit? Did HLD do the same thing you wanted to but miles better?

Just keep going and finish that game. Nintendo recently beated me to the punch with a multiplayer Zelda in Triforce Heroes, and even worse, with non-linearity in Breath of the Wild. That's not stopping me at all. That's why I'm making sure to stay at the Zelda gameplay roots while incorporating enough shit to make my game stand out.

I like this sound a lot. I'm saving you. You never know.

>every boss in the game used a single theme
i would kill myself before i even got to the final boss unless there are only 2 bosses in the game

Pretty much man. Not really that I feel like they beat me in quality (even though they did) I just dont wanna be called a rip off. Or "HLD inspired" it's neither of those.

I'll try and finish it one day. It's called The Long Way Down. If you ever see it, take your credit for helping motivate me.

>using Unity instead of the cheaper-in-the-long-run UE4

>Why didn't you finish that project you dreamed about when you got Unity Sup Forums?
Because the project I dreamed of was just that: a dream. It had no design document, no solid goals, a scope wider than I could've possibly ever taken on.

Also it's Unity and it's shit. I do have a game near completion now though, since I got my priorities in check and stopped chasing after "dream games" that I don't have even half of the talent to execute.

What's that game near completion like user?

Don't worry user, we all want to make it eventually.

In my case, even one sale at a day would save me from poverty given that I'm from Peru, that's my main motivation.

In any case, I'm aiming for an artstyle similar to this. I know that it looks very RPGMakerish, but to me it seems fine and good enough.

Anybody doing ludum dare this weekend?

I'd like to think so user. Hope you make it man. What's the game dev scene like in Peru?

>What's the game dev scene like in Peru?

Non-existant. That's why I'm researching everything about Steam Greenlight as I can. I'm setting a fucking precedent here.

Someone help me sprite this cat, it looks weird

use references

remove angry eyes, fluff out its cheeks and remove the two 'mouth' bits of the face (or at least make them pink)

There you go. Set the standard user. What's the tentative title? I'll vote for it.

What palette size?

How big do you want the sprites? 32x32? 64x64?

It can be any size but the cat fits in a 32x32 box currently
That helped, thanks

Project Prismidion, as a tentative name. The Prismidions are prism-shaped gems that are the McGuffins of the game.

Basically I want the game to be a combination of an non-linear 2D Zelda game with Kirby and the Amazing Mirror's multiplayer. . After a short introudction four players are dropped in the game world and must retrieve the 6 McGuffins by exploring. It's upon them to decide how to retrieve said McGuffins, they could go all together, each on their own or make teams.

The "dungeons" are more like levels in that they have puzzles but these aren't dependants of your items.

And said "items" are not really items but more like weapons with different movesets and a new playstyle that you can change in the fly.

That really sounds pretty fuckin cool. What happens if a player leaves mid game? Is another added or do the remaining stay on the journey?

Learning how to program was too boring, I am not a very fast person when it comes to math.

I have ADHD and I just want to get in there and start creating which is why I like making music more. With making games you have to spend so much time dealing with insanely tedious crap to feel good with the creative process.

I don't know how to import/make character models, levels and music.
Other than that, the main gameplay mechanics and gui are finished.

You could license some code and just make art.

I suck at drawing, I can only do stick figures basically.

I mean I make music as my creative thing, I am not saying I make music for games, I never made music for a game before.

I think I just have to accept I will always be another guy who sometimes thinks of games that would be cool as I am falling asleep, but I don't regret it because of how insanely tedious and difficult it is to program. I also think of how much I really don't like the current industry and I barely play games anymore anyways, so it's like my ideas wouldn't exactly enrich a medium that has already fallen greatly anyways.

no, the game stops until the player reconnects. thats why im aiming to make a short game, and implementing both split screen and lan multiplayer. no online because i dont have money for servers yet.

i love this

lewd

what?

bump

Poor planning between the coder and I, mostly. He wanted to keep adding and planning out content while I wanted to keep stripping it down to the essentials.

>tfw decided to make unique songs for every boss

You could have the fur be a fairly dark grey and black instead of one color. I doesn't need to be overdone but if you want to leave it up to the imagination then what you have is good as is.

I'm using Unreal myself, currently. Sure, it's mostly premade code and assets like said, but fuck that; as if I already have the proper skills to make my own assets. Besides, even if I were using Unity I'd probably end up using premade codes and assets anyway.

desu there are a bunch of free assets you can get from various sites user. I'm just like you guys, having a hard time securing assets, but there are a lot of tools to help you through; havent spent a single dime on paid assets, just a lot of torrents for software.

Here's some stuff to check out/software to torrent if you wanna:

>Marvelous Designer (clothing creator)
>SketchUp (If you can't into Maya/Max at all)
>Mixamo Fuse (actually free for now, humanoid character creator and animator)
>polantis.com/ (for free urban models)
>clara.io (random free 3D models)
>tf3dm.com/ (again, random free 3D models)

There are a bunch more but I don't remember. Hope this helps you guys out.

Question for musicfags
How would I go about making music that sounds like this:
