Literally everybody told you to do this, Berserk has been discussed constantly on multiple boards for years.
As someone who also read the manga after watching the 90's series, I'd highly recommend starting from the beginning, the anime changed a couple details in the Golden age arc that are noteworthy later.
And you miss a couple story arcs skipping to where the anime left off. It's been a while, but I think one of those is the Lost Children arc which is somewhat famous.
Anime only does Golden Age and not even all of it, it skipped a few things such as Wyald for example or everything that happens before Guts meeting Griffith for first time (though some of it got introduced back later in flashbacks), it also has the snake apostle from Black Swordsman arc but it's very rushed and skimmed down to 1 episode kind of deal.
All of Black Swordsman as well as some pieces of Golden Age got skipped by the anime.
Lost Children is not an arc, it's a substory thats part of the Conviction arc and Conviction didn't even exist yet at the time of making the 97 anime. During the production of 97 anime the manga was up to Volume 13 as far as I remember, that's why it ends on Casca rape.

I watched like the first 1/5 of the anime years ago before finally going in on the manga and absolutely adoring it.
Susumu Hirasawa is so good, and so fitting mostly because Miura listened to his crazy stuff while drawing. So it works great as a manga OST as well.
I actually found I didn't mind the CG in the new movies, as it allows for more overall movement and camera movement. It just sucks when they don't draw over the faces.

The anime has a really soft spot for me since I feel in love with the anime first before the manga. So I'll always be able to watch it even if it's just for the Bonfire of Dreams alone. The art is good enough, but the animation is really bare bones. However I'd still take the good art that barely moves over the CGI for that new Berserk series which I don't think I even need to mention at this point. The 97 anime adaption did a lot better at adapting the parts that they did from the manga than this new series. Despite this new series being more point for point the manga, it's nothing more than face value. It's amazing they could make the moment that Guts comes to term with his biggest flaw as a person and have it with zero impact or emotion. I doubt I'll ever watch this series again maybe except once for the dub if they get everyone back again.
Anyway I could bitch about it endlessly, so basically if you want the best experience the manga is always the way to go. People always say that the source material is far better like when it comes to movies based on books, but it really is true in this case.

Honestly, if you've already watched the show, the golden age arc of the manga is pretty hard to get through. The show was a great adaptation, and the music and direction really took it to the next level. The manga just feels flat in comparison.
