The idea of a steam machine is just retarded when you could just get a pc and use an hdmi cord. They were destined to flop. On the other hand I have a steam link and it's pretty decent, use it all the time when friends are over because my pc is in my bedroom which is v small.
Did something in that post trigger you? It's pretty non-controversial.
Gaben thought he could make PCs a console for real. He thought the brand of Steam would be enough to carry it despite the fact that Valve are known for being incompetent and lazy.
You can't play dodo or csshit comfortably with this controller
>pc gamers
>too smart
>top sellers are a bunch of early access survival multiplayer games
When I first heard of STEAM machines, I genuinely thought that valve had some way of running direct x games without windows.
Having to rely on linux only pc games was retarded and guaranteed it dead on arrival.
Valve fucking sucks, that's what happened
>What happened?
We built steam machines and use them without talking about them all the time because we're too busy playing our games in the living room?
oh you mean to the pre-builts? Who the fuck cares?
Steam link works okay too btw.
I still cant believe they spent money on this, why would this ever be a good idea. They could have made a whole bunch of other shit.
They flooded the market with too many options and never properly advertised any of them. Had they just released maybe three models, one for each end of the spectrum, and advertised the hell out of them, it might not have completely bombed.
>spending $450 on something that cost $150 to make
>could have made a normal controller
>could have cooperated with Microsoft for Steam machines, I dunno, a light version of Win8 just to run vidya instead of sperging out and shilling this Debian pain in the arse
>link is fine I guess, but the market is tiny, most people aren't desperate enough for a streaming solution
Valve is a bunch of idiots and they waste their strength basically
>console gamers are too dumb to buy a steam machine
i'd rather buy a console than a steam machine. most of the steam machine hardware is ass and SteamOS is total shit so the games end up running terribly.
a console is also a media device meant for a family room. i don't think any steam machines can play blurays or use netflix.
Too expensive, too limited, games run worse on Steam OS than on Windows. Makes little sense to buy one of these over building your own shitbox with better specs for about the same price.
>>could have cooperated with Microsoft for Steam machines, I dunno, a light version of Win8 just to run vidya instead of sperging out and shilling this Debian pain in the arse
so you're missing the point that the entire purpose of it is to get people used to the idea of decoupling gaming from windows
steam machines were never meant to be a commercial success. it's valve putting their foot in your living room door.
I dunno how so many people here blatantly missed the point on that. They did not think they were going to make money off this venture.
>tfw when you have a steam box
I'm ashamed but it runs even the Witcher 3 pretty dang well.
tfw i use a steam controller to play overwatch on peeeceee
it ended up being trash.
why buy from the kikes at steam who gave us paid mods when you can build your own computer.
no point in giving steam their 30% cut.
>They did not think they were going to make money off this venture.
Okay, lad. This is fucking Valve we're talking about.
You do not get your customers used to things. You give your customers what they desire. I absolutely guarantee you the general Steam user base doesn't mind using Windows, not even a little.
>never meant to be a commercial success
This stupid shit is exactly why Microsoft achieved total domination in the first place.
>alirnware
the default $450 one? If so that's pretty nice.
Witcher 3 ended up being a fairly undemanding game, it ran like a charm on my old-ass GTX580.
>could have made a normal controller
I'm glad you don't influence their company.
When the steam controller was announced, I had already been looking for a solution to play pc games while being comfy. Solutions like xpadder worked, but mode-switching for games was tedious and time consuming. The steam controller had the userbase to ensure that many profiles for many games would be made and listed for other users to select, all in one place. The steam controller was really only meant to bring kb+m games to the couch, and that's the only reason I bought it. I still use a 360 controller for games that use/require it, but I'm happy that I can now also play many other games in my library that I really couldn't beforehand.
anyone who would buy this would just play the same games that are on console anyway. it has no market
Did it even came out?
remember when pccucks tried to defend this shit ?
specially that controller
fun times
Other than the Steam Machines those are all good
anyone who disagrees is wrong.
no, but it did /come/ out
Can somebody fill me in on this? never know what the fuck the steam machine was
I think even consolefags realize steam machines are for retards who cant into PCs. so to them they think theyre better off waiting to actually build one and until then they will stick to their $500 24fps boxes
No, I think it was the one above. It has windows instead of fucking steam OS so it's really not that bad.
It's mostly the shame factor that's bad.\
Besides Novigrad, that even chugs my friend top of the line PC to Bloodborne fps
a pre-built PC console.
except you could build the same pc for half the price on your own so why give the steam kikes money at all?
>pccucks
>specially that controller
>sarcasm
reddit, neogaf, or both?
The controller was the best part of this venture. People who hate it aren't using it for playing kb+m games on the couch (it's intended use). The fact that it can function as a 360 controller is gravy.
Valve made their own version of Linux then liscensed it to companies like Dell/IbuyPower to make consoles. It didn't sell very well but the other two sold like hotcakes.
Can't you change the specs of these things? I've heard you can.
>bring kb+m games to the couch
Futile.
what AAA sports titles aren't the console best sellers again?
t. Person who hasn't used it
Stay cucked retarded xbone babby
I don't even have a single console in my living room, but it's funny you mention the Xbone, because the Xbone controller is one hell of a lot more useful and more of a worthy addition to a nice gaming PC than that jerky Steam controller.
>Steam Machine
A prebuilt PC running a Debian-based distro of GNU/Linux intended for Steam gaming. They only supported games that ran Linux (which is a fair amount, but not all AAA titles that console users play).
>Steam Link
Have a good PC already? Use this box to wirelessly (or dedicated line) stream games off your own PC and play in your living room instead of having to:
A)Lug your PC in the living room
B)Build a new PC just for your living room
>Steam Controller
The solution for playing KB+M games with a controller. It's an unorthodox controller design that's mostly criticized for having only 1 analog stick, even if the trackpads simulate any functional purpose available on a controller.
linux happened.. or, lack there of
Actually, your opinion is wrong - and here's why.
>Xbone Controller isn't as useful
>Xbone Controller doesn't have proper haptic feedback
>Xbone Controller has concave analog sticks
>Xbone Controller isn't as accurate
That is why your opinion is wrong.
(you) know what happened
You're in denial.
Turns out people don't want to play PC games from the comfort of their living room
Give me one reason Xbone is better.
>Worse D-Pad
>Less accurate
>Worse ABXY
>No proper haptics
>Less supported
>Cannot sing songs
Basically this.
The issue is that Valve fears Microsoft locking them out of Windows. It looked likely once Windows 8 first came along, it looked less likely once Windows 8.1, it's looking more likely how they can force shit on people with Windows 10.
Honestly, it's a shame they didn't do a better job given the way Windows is heading. Attaching themselves to a bunch of shitty Linux baggage was the wrong way to go about it. And they've bloated up the Steam client something rotten with utter shit in the process.
>seriously defending xbox one controllers
youtube.com
>PC gamers don't want a prebuilt PC
>uses SteamOS i.e. Linux, which makes it not "plug and play" (No, WINE is not plug and play, someone looking for a console experience is going to hate Linux)
It basically has all the disadvantages of PC gaming with few of the advantages. Steamlink is fine though.
>just use a normal pc
>use a hdmi cord and a controller
there, now you can "play pc games from the comfort of your living room" without dealing with the terrible OS and shit hardware
Steamlink is dope, not even just for gaming. It streams your computer screen so you can do anything you want on your TV.
>Give me one reason Xbone is better.
Conventional design.
People claim this was a blunder.
What If I told you it was just posturing and it got M$ to back out of the console race and gaming almost entirely while bringing dual shock to PC.
Based Valve. Based revisionist history
NBA Live for one.
Steam controller is pretty good tho
isn't it better to just buy a long HDMI cable?
How big is the market for people who actually want to use a PC for their living room but can't build their own HTPC? I know the original Xbox was going to be a Windows machine, the DirectX Box, but they made it a regular console. It just seems bizarre that Valve is trying to compete against consoles for control the living room. Anyone who wants to play PC games on a TV already knows how. Everyone else plays PC games on their desktop. A prebuilt running fucking Linux of all things seems completely pointless.
so it's a really expensive hdmi cable
xbone can be used to play every game under the sun
steam controller can only be used to play 2 games portal and portal 2
>check m8 autist
Pretty weak bait desu
I honestly don't get the obsession with couch gaming. Maybe I'm autistic or something but I'd rather use a low response time monitor with wired peripherals than play on my laggy LCD TV with a wireless controller. Console gaming seems uncomfy to me.
I'm not gonna lug my huge tower out and downstairs when I can use this little box that I got on sale for $30. But yes, it comes with an hdmi cable
He does have a point though, the Steam controller is nonstandard and requires configuration to some extent, while the Xbone controller is as standard and all-purpose as it gets, seamless compatibility with every Dinput and Xinput compliant title under the sun, and that makes it the best controller to use with PC games right now.
It can be comfy as fuck when you are playing a game that works well with a controller.
The turn off for me is even a native 4k tv across the living room is relatively smaller than a native 1080 monitor ergonomically placed on your desk.
But that's wrong. Xbone controller only works with X-input unless i'm using an outside tool, and even then it's tedious and often doesn't work well. I'm not going to be playing RTS games or FPS properly on an Xbone, while this isn't a problem the SC faces.
Anyone not willing to configure it is a gen-Z faggot.
>LUG
Whats the matter fatty? Afraid of some exercise?
JUST
You have to configure the thing for literally every game you play. Sure, it's not a big deal, and usually only takes a minute or two to nail the basic control you want, but the number of games that support the X360 controller natively and without issue is nothing to scoff at. You just plug it in and 90% of PC games made since 2008 recognize it.
They both use the keyboard buffer. They both work for all games on PC. Don't be dumb.
It is still more efficient to build a PC yourself
Steam Machines didn't lose them any money since it was the vendors who distributed, while both the link and controller sold incredibly well.
Not natively.
Community configs.
I'm not fat, I just don't want to do it. I don't really know what you're getting at now since you started by shitting on the steam link and now you're trying to shit on me.
>Not natively.
What the fuck are you talking about. Out of the box they both function perfectly with any game that is on the PC and uses a controller. All of their input is standard keyboard buffer.
I wish Valve would stop shilling their Steam controller with bundles on every FPS game. Fuck off, I don't care how good the trackpad on the gamepad is, I'm not using a fucking controller for DOOM or Deus Ex.
>now since you started by shitting on the steam link an
Actually I just started in by shitting on you.
I play both with the Steam controller. It's 90% as accurate as KB/M and in games like Doom it's negligeable because it doesn't require accuracy.
Steam is such a letdown, holy shit. Do these fuckers at Valve give up on everything? Big picture mode doesn't even work in any resolution higher than 1920x1080. In fact, the entire client looks like trash in those resolutions. Plenty of Hardcore PC Gamers Such As Myself run their desktops in higher resolutions nowadays. It's not a big deal, but proof that they don't even give a fuck anymore.
>tfw bought a Steam Controller on sale
>Can't decide if it was a waste of money or not
It's a cool device and setting it up for games and trying it out is a pretty novel experience.
But the nonconventional design of it means I'd never choose it over my X360 controller for controller-centric games, and for M/KB games I'm much better off just using the mouse and keyboard.
Also, the left trackpad is no replacement for a conventional dpad and anyone who thinks it is, is fucking insane. I was hoping I could use it to play fightans without wearing out my thumb - I was foolishly delusional. It is possibly the worst option out there for playing a fighting game.
It's also just too fucking big. It's bigger than the 360 controller and the shoulder buttons take some effort to reach my fingers up to when they're usually resting on the triggers.
The haptics are a really cool feature. Everything else is just kind of odd and wonky.
>Paying to lower accuracy
Sounds great! Where do I sign up?
>What happened?

I hate how they just stopped working on the desktop client.
Big Picture is shit unless you're playing from a couch on a TV. It's not a desktop interface, period.
Where the fuck is the suggest-a-game feature in the desktop? Where the fuck are all the library sorting options?
GabeN is more like Microsoft than he'd like to admit. Both Valve and Microsoft give up on some ideas too easily while pushing some bad ideas nonstop despite resistance.
>SteamOS is total shit so the games end up running terribly.
Got any evidence for that?
Ask a guy who owns a Steam Machine anything
>They wanted to reach console gamers
>Had a perfect chance to do it at that year's E3 with consolefolks watching
>Instead they had a small private event that they didn't really announce to anybody
>they just had a small room with the steam machines we've already seen in pictures sitting on podiums
>They weren't powered up and there were no monitors
>Gabe was standing in the middle of the room looking awkward and not really saying anything, just watching people take pictures of cheap cases
>Never heard a word about it after that until they were released on steam with the controllers and link
>They aren't compatible with many good games
>Products are graded by system specs, a metric toward which most console players are illiterate
>Shitload of different machines and console players aren't familiar with the reputations of these companies
I was a console player at the time and I was holding out for a steam machine. After seeing Gabe fuck up at every stage of promoting these systems, I just said fuck it and went PC.
Valve really is only kept afloat by the ingenuity of indie developers.
1. Do you regret it
2. Do you like it
It's terribad for platforming too. (but so is xbone and 360)
It's been good for rts and turn based games too. It's better for shooters than a traditional gamepads but not as good as kbm.
1 and 2. Not at all. Great little machine for the money. Handles an astonishing amount of games on medium graphics.
Add tags to your games. Library sorting is better on desktop than big picture.
>still can't add non steam games in bp mode.
Valve is kept afloat by loyal userbase. Indie devs are not affiliated with Valve and choose the platform because they want to reach a big audience.
>SteamOS is total shit so the games end up running terribly
Dunno about SteamOS, but my main OS is Linux and every single game I tried on have ran without a single problem and with no noticeable performance dips compared to the Windows versions.
The only time I ran into a difficulty was related to the tiling WM I use, which got quickly solved by telling it to ignore the game.
Valve really did a great job with Linux support.
I own the controller. Time to write a well thought out greentext of pros and cons that shit posting anons couldn't care less about.
Here's the pros:
>I can fucking sit on a couch and use my PC on my TV and browse the web while I play 3DS.
>I can play any fucking PC game there is for the most part and if the game is downloaded from Steam it just works.
>Every mouse game is playable with it.
>Remapping is easy thanks to community profiles, even on niche JRPG games.
>Making your own mappings is easy as fuck and not as complicated as most people make them out to be.
>Haptics work really well.
>Gyro works really well.
>The controller feels really sturdy, like made out of high quality plastic that you can throw on the ground and it won't shatter easily.
>Buttons are responsive and the 2 extra buttons at the back are nice
>Wireless with literally 0 input lag.
>Comes with it's own USB "hub" and stick for the wireless.
Here's the cons:
>It uses fucking batteries that come with it.
>The desktop keyboard outside of big picture mode is buggy and slow as fuck.
>The big picture web browses obviously doesn't support ad-block / addons, but other than that it works and desktop keyboard works.
>Big Picture Mode feels cheap and clunky to use, even with the controller.
>Sometimes you just can't get that FPS game to feel right on the controller.
>Price.
