It always looks like a chore and they sell for dimes anyway. I already got like 400 cards and just thinking about manually selling them is a pain in the ass.

it kind of is. I mean, there's no reason to really, but that's what I do. I've got a couple of bucks just from selling them.

I mean if you take an hour or so just to fight through it and sell even 100 of them, you'd probably make a decent amount from them.

Besides selling them, you can get emoticons and backgrounds for your profile through creating badges. Also, whenever you craft a badge, you increase your steam level. I don't have a clue what that does

Literally the only real use you get out of badges is gaining levels, and the only legitimate use that you could get out of gaining levels is increased friends list space.
So for people who are efamous or something its kind of useful. Otherwise yeah, its just epeen.

At some point you get to the level when doing literally nothing (simply turning on Steam once a week) will yield you few (in my case it's 3-5) booster packs a week, after few weeks / months you can buy yourself a game for that.

But to get to that point you literally need to either spend hundreds of dollars on community market OR have shitloads of friends and a lot of free time to trade your excess cards

It's a crazy smart money making plot by Valve. You see, you can exchange these cards for virtual goods like emoticons, and steam wallpapers and other crap like that. Or you may sell them. Whatever you do, Valve get a cut.
And people are retarded enough to spend real money on this crap, so Valve are laughing their way to the bank by making money from literally nothing.
