Does anyone else in this day and age still like Ecco the Dolphin? What are modern gamer's thoughts on these games?

Game is comfy af
Bought a collection with it in recently, played it on Mega Drive
Never spent long with it though, I remember at the time being a bit lost on what to really do, but thought it was chill regardless. Nice OST too. I'll need to get back to it and hope I'm not retarded to get my way through
>comfy
Red flag right there
It's like a wonderful combination of relaxing and stressful. Music and atmosphere are very chill and relaxed feeling, but you're constantly drowning which makes you want to rush, but the game is also designed so rushing will usually just fuck you over harder. It's weird, but I love it.
It seems comfy from the outset but it's really nothing of the sort.
I'll need to properly play it, like I said, most I remember is not knowing what to do next except swim around
One of my favorite series.
It's a crime how Sega neglects it.
I recommend it. It's a lot about exploring, just swim till you get blocked and try to find a way around. It's pretty well designed, but does get quite difficult in some points.
I never got far with the MD originals, but I played a fuckton of the Dreamcast game. The graphics of that one were stunning, back in the day.
I only ever had the dreamcast one, and it was controller-snappingly hard.
Those fucking waterways in the sky. Ridiculous.
It's the easiest of the main games, too.
...
Scary ass spoopy game. Really the first game with "whoa" lore.
I love the story behind this game.
Some guy was payed millions of dollars from NASA to try to teach dolphins to speak so they could speak to potential aliens. The guy went nuts from drugs in the 70's and started to believe in the Earth Coincidence Control Office, Aliens that were controlling everything. Hence Ecco.
one of the women who studied the male dolphin started jerking him off because he lost his attraction to the female dolphins. So yeah that's pretty fucked up.
okay
Between that and the dolphin rape caves, these are some scary fucking critters.

>all of this bullshit
I prefer the Genesis soundtrack while playing, but the CD soundtrack is amazing.
one of of my favorite games.
...
They're both cool in their own sense. The Spencer soundtrack on CD is of much better "quality", but I feel all of the tracks sound a little too similar. Also maybe I'm biased because I grew up with the Genesis version.
Fun fact, the level Welcome to the Machine, which is on rails (so it always takes the same amount of time to complete no matter what) is the exact same length as the Pink Floyd song of the same name.
The 3D Classics version is really good. Shame it locks you in one mode, though.
Seriously? they're all that hard?
What was the actual story behind Ecco though? Something about Japanese whaling/dolphin murdering industry?
This video makes a lot more convincing arguement.

Do you mean English or Japanese?

Normal and Super Dolphin (infinite air and health).
You pick one and you can't switch without starting the whole game over again.
>I want to be able to cheat through the hard parts!
Short AND retarded.
I had a super freaky thing happen when I was younger. I was stuck on the Asterite for what seemed like weeks. This was before you could look up shit easily on the internet so I was completely stuck what to do.
I did notice that there were common patterns in some of the level codes though, so I decided to try mixing and matching in the hopes of finding a working code to a later level so I could at least keep playing. I tried for a long time and found a few codes to earlier levels, but no later ones and as it went on I was getting frustrated.
All the time I was doing this, my brother was in the other room blaring Pink Floyd. Finally the loud music and frustration of my codes not working got a bit much and I just mashed NNNNNNNNN and hit go.
The screen turned black which freaked me out to start with. But then at the EXACT MOMENT that line in that song happens, the level name appeared on screen.
Welcome my son... welcome to the machiiiine!
Then all the sudden I'm in a spaceship thing being attacked by Geiger style aliens and I die. One of the freakiest moments I've ever had in a game.
It's garbage
Ahh!!! Don't bother with the Super Dolphin mode they put into the 3DS version. As you've seen, it makes it so you always have the invincibility glyph power so there will be glowing sparks flying around you the entire time. Also you can't turn it on or off at all.
Instead, use the robust debug menu that's in all versions of the game. Pause while Ecco is facing the screen and enter Right, B, C, B, C, Down, C, Up. It lets you activate and deactivate invincibility without the swirling stars around you. Also lets you level select, warp to any point in a level.
In what way?
I only used it to see all the levels. Then go back and play it normally.
Even still, it's a pain because you can't turn it off and you're stuck with that glowing shit around you. But there aren't a ton of points where invincibility is all that useful anyways. Mostly it lets you explore underwater without worrying about air, but the game is pretty forgiving about air spots anyways.
I remember writing a bunch of notes in a notebook when this game first came out, like where the crystals were located or the air pockets so I wouldn't have to use the map. Good times.
It's a damn great game with a nice sequel on top of that. If anything it's just a shame that Ed couldn't finish the series.

so fucking good

this is the CD version of the game, sounds amazing holy shit
I only ever played the first one. Amazing atmosphere, but the game itself is fucking ass.
Being all about exploring and having a time limit on how long you can explore (even though it makes sense) the main environment of the game seems like a frustrating contradiction, as though I would really enjoy exploring the world but would get really frustrated by my air limit.
BE REAL, IT DOESN'T MATTER ANYWAY
YOU KNOW YOU'RE JUST A LITTLE TOO LATE

cancelled Dreamcast game, damn
>young
>Play echo for dreamcast
>see this whale
>so terrified I didn't go near it cause I was scared it would attack me
>never finish game
There isn't really a time limit on how long you can explore though. Just how long you can explore in between finding breaths of air. It's all designed with that in mind though. You delve into some caves, find a pocket of air and then branch out from there.
That sounds fun, then. I'll see if there's a good Genesis/MD emulator for 3DS and give it a try.
Is that gif from the ps4 port?
There was a PS4 port? Anyways, I don't know. Just grabbed it off google.
The M2 3D classics version is an excellent port. Though I heard 3DS emulation is pretty good as well. It runs like butter on a PSP so I assume 3DS should do just fine with a rom as well.
Gorgeous game, amazing sprites and music, HORRIBLE game design. It's bad enough that the controls are sloppy and the game only registers input on every other frame (or so I've heard), but the main way you advance through levels is by awkwardly nudging rocks towards things. And don't even get me started on the pile of bullshit that was Welcome To The Machine, although I think the Tube of Medusa in the second game was worse.
Somehow I doubt anyone actually finished this game before save states were a thing.
What the fuck? 3spooky.
HURRY BOY SHE'S WAITING
>It's bad enough that the controls are sloppy
But the controls aren't sloppy at all. They're perfect.
>but the main way you advance through levels is by awkwardly nudging rocks towards things
Those are fairly small parts of the game.
>Welcome To The Machine, although I think the Tube of Medusa in the second game was worse.
Just lol to this.
i think Ed Annunziata also inspired in the artwork and music of progressive Rock, listen to Pink Floyd Echoes and practically the first part is the description of the game so the title of the stage Welcome to the Machine.
And some of the music seems to be inspired by the works of Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
>rampant speculation: the post
Plenty of people beat the game without save states. Ecco is weird to control because he's completely different from almost any other game character, but the controls are tight and responsive once you know what you're doing. Sections like the machine would have been impossible if they weren't.
