It's like mix of Castlevania 2, with hint of Zelda and Metroid, with cute cast and good pixelart.
Especially in case of Shantae 1.
The devs streamlined the design a bit in the sequels, and they're a bit less Nintendo-difficult than the original. Still, not bad games at all.
I personally played the whole trilogy for the very first time in release order last fall, and enjoyed them a great deal.

Really enjoyable and tight gameplay. You get frequent power ups throughout and you always have new locations to explore, but you can backtrack using your new abilities and sometimes the game requires it. Brilliant OST and it's got a good sense of humour.

I prefer singleplayer because i can do all the side quests and farm for whatever legendary no matter at what point in the game.
