I was born in 89 and I loved the new DOOM. I played 1 and 2 on my first computer and DOOM 3 was a huge disappointment. If anything, DOOM 3 is the one the teens enjoy.

No, I've been replaying Fusion recently. I don't think Federation Force is excellent, but it's better than Hunters at least which was a decent game.

why have there been so many indie games recently with one dumb gimmick to "diversify" gameplay, that end up not being able to carry the game at all?

Portal is an example of when something like that can actually be pulled off, because the environment is immersive and the 'gimmick' actually makes for a lot of very solid gameplay

however other puzzle games like that one reddit one where you use forced perspective doesn't seem like it'd be able to hold its own as a whole game.

why do so many developers insist on the latter route (developing the cool gimmick) rather than using that gimmick as a baseline to build off of and create a good game?

Disregarding all the false hype, lies about missing features like multiplayer, the things it attempts to do, it doesn't do well. The gameplay is literally just blasting rocks and managing inventory, and even the inventory management is clunkier and more of a grind than pretty much every other game that implements it at the moment.

Combat and ground movement are incredibly sluggish and unsatisfying, and the ship doesn't even give you full control, being guide and automatically steered away from obstacles etc.

I'd counter your question with what it is people are actually enjoying about the game? All I see is people who dropped $60, realized they wasted their money, and shifted into full damage control mode.
